Like many lovers of books, Mary and her husband, Richard Goldman, seldom walked past a bookstore without stopping to look inside. They often talked of opening their own store one day.
When Mary was hospitalized with heart trouble in 1989, they decided it was time to get serious. Richard who worked for a business company, was eager to work for himself, and Mary needed to slow down from her demanding job.

The store merely broke even in its first year, with only $120,000 in sales. But Mary was always coming up with new ways to attract customers. Today Mystery Lovers makes sales of about $420,000 a year. After paying taxes, business costs and the six part-time sales clerks, Richard and Mary together earn about $34,000.
“The job you love may not go hand in hand with a million-dollar income,” says Richard. “This has always been about an enjoyable life for ourselves, not about making a lot of money.”

In 1954 a turning point in medical history, resulting from applied bionics（仿生学）; was the first “open heart” surgery done in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by Dr. C. W. Lillehei's techniques for the first time, which allowed the patient to be operated on while blood was supplied to the patient from a donor (捐献人). Today “open heart” surgery, using more complicated methods and bionic devices, is common in the United States.
Important technological advances such as those already mentioned have encouraged scientists to develop the artificial heart. Early in 1983, in its first use by a human patient, a medical team at the University of Utah Medical Center replaced the diseased heart by a Jarvik-7.
The world watched amazed as television pictures of Dr. Clark showed him as he improved steadily after the surgery. His continued life demonstrated, that a bionic device could imitate the action and function of a healthy heart. Dr. Clark lived for 112 days.
Life-like or bionic machines have existed for several centuries. The development of tools by man's ancestors is a good example of the application of bionics to extend human capabilities. Modern bionic research is especially involved in prosthetics（修复术） devices that substitute （代用） for, or replace lost or diseased body parts such as arms, legs, and eyes.
Recent advances in electronics have enabled scientists to make better use of electrical impulses（驱动力） in the control of prosthetic devices. One interesting research project is the development of an artificial eye in which video signals are transformed into light patterns that are sent into nerve receptors in the patient.
The future for applied bionics seems to be promising. Existing bionic devices will become smaller, faster, and more effective. Dog Translation Products Coming to U.S.
A Japanese toy maker declares that they have developed a gadget（小器具）that translates dog barks into human language and plans to begin selling the gadget---under the name of Bowlingual ---in U.S. pet stores and gift shops this summer.
Tokyo-based Takara Co. Ltd. says about 300,000 of the dog translator gadgets have been sold since it was on sale in Japan late last year. It is forecasting far bigger sales once an English language translation for dogs comes to America in August. The United States is home to about 67 million dogs, more than six times the number in Japan.
“We know that the Americans love their dogs so much, so we don’t think they will mind spending $120 on this product,” the Takara marketing manager said during an interview at a recent pet products conference in Atlanta.
Regarded as one of the coolest inventions of 2002 by Time magazine, Bowlingual is made up of a 3 inch long wireless microphone that is fastened to a dog collar and sends out sounds to a small console（控制台）that is connected to a database（数据库）. The console divides each bark into six emotional types－happiness, sadness, disappointment, anger, threat and desire－and shows common phrases, such as “You’re ticking me off, ” that fit the dog’s emotional state.
Takara says it has spent millions of dollars developing the gadget in cooperation with famous sound experts and animal behaviorists.
One thing that does appear certain is that the markets for animal translation products will likely remain a dog’s world since Takara has no plans to develop a similar gadget for cats. “They are too unpredictable （反复无常）,” the marketing manager said.

Time was -- 20 or 30 years ago -- when Mom and kids would go to a studio and sit, and the idealized result would be framed and given to Dad, who would take it to the office and display it for visitors to admire. Often, I'm sure, said photo really did enable the working man to contemplate his loved ones between appointments, but it served other purposes as well. The photo was an emblem, an asset, a hanging prize. Behold, it said: I am not only a lawyer or corporate titan（巨人）, I am a husband and father. It clarified that work and family occupied two distinct realms (领域), and testified that the owner had achieved success in both.
Now, the opposite is true. Today's photos are an expression of the conflicted feelings of the modern office worker. Rather than relegating the family to a different realm, they are an attempt to bring the two realms closer, to admit family into the office. They are attempts to make us feel that we are not separate from our kids; that we are still with them, and they with us, vivid, changeable, in the flesh. They are expressions of pride, yes, and love, yes, but also of guilt and longing. So powerful are the emotions roused that a friend of mine, upon returning to work after having her first child, found that she couldn't bring any photos; they made the absence from her son too painful.
Not everything has changed. Formal photos still hang in uneasy coexistence with informal ones, in women's offices and in men's. Sociologist Arlie Hochschild noted, that it was the lower-ranking women who peppered their desks with intimate family snapshots. For these women, she posits（提出）, the photos sent a message: I may not be powerful here, but there's a place, home, where I am. The more high-up the woman, the less she indulged in these snapshots（快照）, as if they might call her commitment（责任） into question. Instead, executive women resorted to the traditional framed trophy photo（获奖照片）. I don't entirely buy this distinction -- in my workplace, women at all levels do the montage thing, as do men -- but I do remember being in the office of a busy lawyer and seeing a framed photo of her and her kids on the beach, and it was facing me, not her, and I wondered, a little, if it was saying: I don't work as much as it seems!
At the same time that family photos testify to what we have, they also testify to what we don't. What we don't have, while we're working, is the very thing they display: the spontaneous moments, the golden unlimited hours. In keeping these snapshots at our desk we are like pets, really, that in their master's absence seek out his sweater to lie upon. Absent our family, the best we can do is bask in its representation, create the illusion that we can sense our kids, feel them, hear their laughter.

W: Hello, Jim. What was the film like?
M: Terrible. It was a complete waste of time. It was about a married couple. They had to live with the wife’s mother because they didn’t have enough money to buy a house of their own.
W: A lot of young people have to do that.
M: Yes, but the husband had to work overtime three times a week, so he was always tired.
W: It sounds miserable.
M: Not really. His wife was able to find a good job as a manager in a company. So, in the end, they were able to buy a house, but he didn’t have to work any more. Stupid, wasn’t it?
W: I don’t know. Anyway, I don’t want to see that film. I’m so busy with my examinations.

M: This is really a good store. I’m sure you can find everything you need for Europe right here.
W: I hope so. I have a lot to do before the trip. I need trousers, a light jacket, and a sweater.
M: Here are the trousers. Oh! This is a nice pair. They’re black, so they’ll go with everything.
W: Except that, if it’s sunny, they’ll be too hot. Besides, I already have black ones at home. How about these pink trousers?
M: They’re a much nicer color.
W: And they feel like a better quality, too. I’ll try them on later. Let’s look for a sweater now. I like this brown one.
M: Do you? I really think it’s too plain. What do you think of this white one? It’s more beautiful, so you could wear it in the evening.
W: I know, but the purple one is looser. It’ll be more comfortable. And how about this jacket? It’s beautiful, but I know it’s too heavy for the summer.
M: it’s also too expensive! I don’t want to spend that much money. Do you see a cotton jacket?
W: Right over here. Oh, these are much lighter, and a lot more useful.

W: I’m so worried about Marc these days. Ever since he moved into his own apartment he’s been losing weight. He really doesn’t look well at all.
M: He moved into his own apartment? Well, no wonder he’s looking so thin. He really should try to gain some weight. Perhaps he’s not eating enough. Did you talk to him about it when you saw him yesterday?
W: Yes, but well, you know. Well, anyway, how’s Tim these days?
M: Tim? Oh, Tim has worried me, too. He is really getting much too fat. He needs to lose about seventy-five pounds now. I don’t know what to do. I keep telling him to go on a diet, but he gets angry every time I try to talk to him about it.
W: Seventy-five pounds!? That is a lot of weight to lose. What does Tim eat?
M: I really don’t know. But I am sure he is eating too much cake and sweets. I keep telling him, “Tim, dear, you will just have to eat more fruit and vegetables and eat less sweets. Of course he doesn’t listen to me. Maybe Marc should talk to him.”
W: Well, maybe. Oh, did I tell you he’s decided to eat vegetables and fruit only?
M: Marc doesn’t eat any meat now?! perhaps that’s why he’s so thin! I’ll talk about it with him.

W: A small store sold a lot of nice jewellery, and the owner was always very careful to prevent people from stealing it.
One day a thief came to try to steal a beautiful necklace, but the owner of the store caught him immediately and went to the telephone to call the police to come and arrest him.
“Please don’t do that!” the thief said. “I have a wife and three children at home. And I’ll pay for the necklace.”
The owner of the store felt sorry for the man and he didn’t want to have a lot of trouble with the police, so he accepted the man’s offer to pay for the necklace and went to prepare a bill for it. But when he gave it to the thief, the man looked disturbed and said, “I wasn’t intending to get anything as expensive as that. Do you have something cheaper?”
