Throughout the history of life, there have been many major upheavals(剧变) in which whole groups of animals were replaced by others. Perhaps the most famous was the replacement of the dinosaurs by the mammals 65 million years ago. Anther major change occurred 150 million years earlier, when the dinosaurs took over the position of dominance that had been held for 80 million years by mammal like reptiles(爬行动物).

What triggered these great upheavals? Scientific thinking about the various factors that might have been responsible for such replacements has undergone some significant changes of its own. At times, for example, scientists have suggested that mammals caused the extinction of the dinosaurs by eating their eggs or by competing for the same food resources. Now , however, most people are convinced that the mammals played only a minor role, if any(largely because both groups had lived side by side for millions of years), and that, instead, environmental change was primarily responsible. The mammals apparently sat around for 150 million years in the Mesozoic undergrowth until , with the extinction of the dinosaurs, they had their opportunity to radiate into the available niches(处所).

59.The animal groups mentioned in the passage assumed(假定) dominance in which order?

    A.Mammals like reptiles, mammals, dinosaurs

A.They have changed considerably throughout their history

D.They do not account for the development of the Mesozoic undergrowth.

                 C

What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?

Professor Jerald Jullion of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a “white lie” , such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Others researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling . This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at; the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way .

Research has also been done into the changes of people’s behavior in a number of small , clearly unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now”. They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch(发痒).

Another gesture which gives liars away is that the writer Desmond Morris in his book Man watching calls “the mouth cover”. He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the month. Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself or herself from lying.

Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth, or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the context in which the lie is told.

63.According to the passage , a “white lie” seems to be a lie ___.

A.that other people believe         B.that other people don’t believe

C.told in order to avoid offending someone D.told in order to take advantage of someone

A.are better at telling lies than men do B.generally lie far more than men

C.often make promises they intend to break D. lie to make profit from it

65.Researchers find that when a person tells lies ____.

A.his blood pressure increases measurably B.he looks very serious

C.he tends to make some small changes in his behaviors

    D.he uses his unconscious mind

66.One reason people sometimes rub their noses when they lies is that ____.

A.they wish they were somewhere else

B.the nose is sensitive to physical changes caused by lying

C.they want to cover their mouths

D.they are trying to stop themselves from telling lies

67.Which of the following may best betray(背叛) a liar?

A.The touching of the tip of one’s nose B.The change of one’s behaviors

C.“The mouth cover ‘ gesture                      D.The situations in which his lies are told

It doesn’t matter whether you believe rap(说唱) words have a lot of meat in them. McDonald’s does.

And now the fast food giant is prepared to put its money where music stars’ mouths are , by paying rap artists who mention the Big Mac in their songs $5 every time their work is played on the radio down south.

At first glance it seems like the kind of offer that would be instantly rejected by top artists like 50 Cent or Snoop Dogg. But they’ve done product placement words in some of their music before, and if a song were to become a huge hit, that $5 fee could rapidly turn into a small fortune.

The idea is part of the restaurant chain’s marketing policy to reach a younger crowd. Under the deal , the company would be able to refuse any words that it felt was unsuitable, but would leave the method of including the mention up to the individual artist.

McDonald’s has hired a marketing firm called Maven Strategies to mix the meat with the beat.

And it’s familiar subject for the ad specialists--- they managed to get a Seagram’s gin product mentioned in five hit songs last year, which is what attracted the food giant in the first place.

Product placement is becoming an increasingly common tool for advertisers in movie and TV, as more consumers selectively pick up commercials simply by hitting the remote control during breaks in their favorite show.

They believe this latest Big Mac attack will be one message you can’t take no notice of.

But many groups are already upset by the McDonald’s plan, arguing the chain promotes childhood fatness with its fast food, and that having kids’ music heroes exactly sing its praises will not only fatten company bank account, but the younger generation as well.

72.The underlined word in the first paragraph “does” means ____.

   A.believes B.matters C.has D.prepares

73.From the passage, we learn that ____.

A.It is McDonald’s that decides on how to get Big Mac added in words.

B.MacDonald’s request of words placement was turned down before.

C.MacDonald’s comes up with the idea from the success of another business.

D.MacDonald’s is getting used to such a common advertising tool.

74.The reason for the use of product placement by MacDonald’s is that ___.

A.the idea is well accepted among fast food eaters

B.people like to watch product placement advertisement

C.it is a popular tool with advertisers

D.young generation consider it as a show they like best.

75.Which of the following statements is true?

A.Some groups are against McDonald’s plan for its bad influence on child educating.

B.The food company sings praises for kid’s music heroes.

C.50 Cent or Snoop Dogg will get rich if they eat at McDonald’s too often.
