第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该选项标号涂黑。

A.

Mom was a teacher most of her life. When she wasn’t in the classroom, she was educating her children or grandchildren: correcting our grammar; starting us on collections of butterflies, flowers or rocks; or inspiring a discussion on her most recent “Book of the Month Club” topic. Mom made learning fun.

It was sad for my three brothers and me to see her suffering in her later years. At eighty-five, she suffered a stroke and she went steadily downhill after that.

Two days before she died. My brothers and I met at her nursing home and took her for a short ride in a wheelchair. While we waited for the staff to lift her limp body back into bed, Mom fell asleep. Not wanting to wake her, we moved to the far end of the room and spoke softly.

After several minutes our conversation was interrupted by a muffled sound coming from across the room. We stopped talking and looked at Mom. Her eyes were closed, but she was clearly trying to communicate with us. We went to her side.

    “Whrrr,” she said weakly.

“Where?” I asked. “Mom, is there something you want?” “Whrr,” she repeated a bit stronger. My brothers and I looked at each other and shook our heads sadly.

Mom opened her eyes, sighed, and with all the energy she could muster said, “ Not was. Say were!”

It suddenly occurred to us that Mom was correcting brother Jim’s last sentence. “if it was up to me…”

Jim leaned down and kissed her cheek. “Thanks, Mom,” he whispered. We smiled at each other and once again shook our heads… this time in awe of a remarkable teacher.

43. What does the writer think of his mother?

D. His mother was an excellent teacher before she was retired.

44. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?

    A. Once a teacher, always… B. Mom’s will

    C. A teacher’s life D. A teacher’s devotion

B.

Having finished her homework, Ma Li wants some music for relaxation. As usual, she starts her computer and goes to Baidu.com to download music files. But this time she is surprised when an announcement about protecting songs’ copyright bursts onto the scream.

The age of free music and movie downloads may have come to an end as Web companies like Baidu are accused of infringing (侵犯) copyright. This month lawsuits (诉讼) have been filed against four websites offering free downloads.

In September, a Beijing court ordered Baidu to pay recording company Shanghai Push for their losses. Baidu were also told to block the links to the pirated music on the website. This caused a heated discussion on Internet file sharing.

“Baidu’s defeat in the lawsuit shows it is not right to get copyrighted songs without paying. Downloaders may face lawsuits or fines,” said an official from the Guangdong Provincial Press and Publication Administration.

Like many teens, Huang Ruoru, an 18-year-old girl from Puning in Guangdong Povince, doesn’t think that getting music from websites is wrong. She always shares her favourite songs downloaded from Baidu with her friends. When told about the lawsuit, she began to feel a little sorry about getting others’ work without paying.

But she said that the wish of file sharing is too convenient to pass up. “Buying CDs is too expensive for students,” she said. “I don’t know what I will do now. It’s really terrible if my only choices are radio and television.”

However, other teenagers have different ideas. Wang Yafei, a Senior 2 girl from Jinan, Shangdong Province pointed out that file sharing is a good way to promote pop singers. “If I download a song and really like it, I will buy the CDs,” she said. “So what the recording companies really should do is improving their music, rather than fighting against filesharers.”

    C. CDs are too expensive D. it is a good way to promote pop singers

48. What can you infer from this passage?

A. People will probably have to pay to download music.

B. More and more websites will stop downloading music.

C. Recording companies’ music is not as good as that on the Internet.

D. Baidu didn’t pay Shanghai Push for their losses.

Research scientists say they have discovered a new drug that will help the fight against the disease tuberculosis(肺结核). Experts say it has been shown in animal experiments to clear tuberculosis mycobacterium (病菌) two times faster than other medicines. Scientists have just begun to test the experimental drug in people.

Tuberculosis infects at least eight million people each year. It also is one of the leading causes of death around the world. Only AIDS more.

Tuberculosis spreads easily through the air, by coughing, sneezing or even talking. But people infected with the tuberculosis mycobacterium will not necessarily become sick. The organism can live in the body for years before becoming active.

Koen Andries led the effort to develop the new drug. He said the new drug is the first such medicine to be tested in people since rifampin was developed in 1963.

Today, rifampin is used with two other medicines to treat tuberculosis. The drugs must be taken for up to nine months. But experts say the treatment is no longer effective against the disease in many parts of the world. They say this is because the mycobacterium has developed defenses against the treatment. Doctors say the resistance (抗药性) resulted from patients failing to follow directions for the medicines.

Doctor Andries says the new drug works differently than other ones. It blocks the energy supply of the organism. He also says the drug appears to be most effective when given with the older drugs.

Limited human tests of the new drug have shown that it is safe. But some researchers warn that it may not work as well in people as it has in mice.

A. say that AIDS is more dangerous than tuberculosis

B. tell us that the new drug will be sure to remove the patient’s pain

C. say that being healthy is most important to us

D. introduce a new research result

56. We can infer from the passage that ____________.

A. the new drug is more effective on mice.

B. the new drug can also treat the AIDS.

C. people began to use the new drug to treat tuberculosis

D. we must be careful when using the new drug.

The big news for American newspapers this week was the elections. But there was also news about their industry. The number of newspaper readers in the United States continues to fall. Average daily circulation (发行量) fell by almost one percent in the six months. It has been a problem for newspapers for some years.

American newspapers get some of their money from readers. But mostly they depend on businesses to buy advertising space in their pages.

The larger the circulation, the more a newspaper can charge advertisers. But recently, several newspapers have admitted lying about their numbers of readers.

In June, the Tribune Company announced that it had overstated (夸大) sales of two of its papers. These were Newsday in Long Island, New York, and the Spanish-language paper Hoy in New York City. The Tribune Company also owns the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune.

In July, the Audit Bureau of Circulation punished Newsday and Hoy. The A. B. C. examines circulation claims made by publishers, so advertisers can trust the numbers. Among other steps, the two newspapers will have to report circulation numbers more often than usual for the next two years.

The Chicago Sun Times also faces the same punishment. That newspaper is owned by Hollinger International.

The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating Holliger International and its chief, Conrad Black. Hollinger says Mr Black took nearly four hundred million dollars from the company.

Recently the Belo Corporation announced it had overstated the circulation of the Dallas Morning News, in Texas. The publisher will repay twenty-three million dollars to advertisers. It will also provide four million dollars in free advertising. Other publishers that falsely reported their circulations will also be repaying advertisers millions of dollars.

An Audit Bureau spokeswoman says cases like these appear to be rare. But the Securities and Exchange Commission announced last month that it would expand its investigation to other newspapers.

57. What does the underlined word “their” refer to?

    A. The news             B. The elections

C. American newspapers D. Newspaper readers

58. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. At least four newspapers cheated the advertisers

B. American newspapers are mostly owned privately.

C. Advertisers got the circulation from the A.B.C.

D. More investigation will be made on the newspaper circulation.

59. How many newspapers does the Tribune Company have?

    A. Only one B. Two C. Four D. Six

60. The publisher overstated the number of readers of their newspapers ______.

A. so that more people will buy their newspapers.

B. so that they can ask the advertisers for more money

C. so that they could avoid being punished.

D. Because the circulation has been failing for years.

  观点一

Nowadays, there are opposite opinions on English learning throughout our country. Some think it’s a waste of time and money to learn English but I think differently.

First, ours is still a developing country. We need to learn the advanced technologies from foreign countries. Second, it will much easier for us to communicate with foreign friends if we can speak English freely. And what’s more, we can understand western cultures better. In addition,….

So I strongly feel that we should strengthen English learning at schools and try our best to improve our English in order to catch up with advanced countries and make our country richer and stronger.

  观点二

Nowadays, there are opposite opinions on English learning throughout our country. Some think we should strengthen it because it’s so useful but I think differently.

We students spend at least three hours studying English every day. Just for listening, we have to buy tapes, recorders, walkmans or even CD-players, which has wasted us a lot of time and money. What’s more, the schools spend too much in helping English teaching. But what’s the use of our learning English? For most of us, we are just doing it for all kinds of exams. Besides,….

So I strongly feel that we shouldn’t spend so much time and money in learning English.
