I was only eight years old when the Second World War ended, but I can still remember something about the 31 celebrations in the small town where I lived on the day when the war in Europe ended. We had not 32 much from the war where, though, like most children of my age, I often saw 33 houses in the streets and the very big 34 lorries passing through. But both at home and at school I had become 35  to the phrases “before the war” and “when the war is over”. “Before the war”, obviously, 36 had been better, though I was too young to understand why,   37 there had been no bombs then, and people had eaten things like ice cream and bananas, which I had   38 heard of. When the war was over we would go back to London, but this meant very 39 to me. I did not remember what London was like.

What I remember now 40  V-Day was the afternoon and the evening. Some boys and girls were collecting 41 and building an enormous bonfire(篝火). We stood and watched them for a time, and then I went home and 42 myself in with my key and waited for my parents to come back from work.

It was May and still broad 43  when my mother arrived, and my father came in about an hour later. After dinner I said I wanted to 44 the bonfire, so when it got dark my father took me to the end of the street. The bonfire was very 45  , and somehow people had collected some old clothes to 46 “Hitler” with the moustache they had put on top of it. Just as we arrived, they set light to it. The flames  47  soon. Everyone was cheering and shouting.

I stood beside my father until the 48 started to go down, not knowing what to say. He said nothing, either. He had 49   in the First World War and remembered everything he had experienced. At last he said, “Well, that’s it, son. Let’s hope that this time it really will be the _50_one.”

On May21, 1999, some American scientists were working at the computers to look for information they needed. Suddenly they saw a lot of very bright red spots crossing the computers' screens. At the same time the computers were working much slower. To find out what was happening they stopped their work to check some parts of the computers .To their horror, they found out that most of their stored information was got rid of by computer viruses .Obviously all these computers had been infected by computer viruses.
It's said that the computer viruses were made by two or three Philippne young men fond of playing tricks. They all had excellent education .They created the viruses just to show their intelligence. The kind of computer viruses is named "I Love You" virus. This virus can hide in computers for long. When the time comes it will attack the computers by lowering the important functions, damaging their normal programs or even getting rid of a great deal of information which operators of the computers often use or store, what's worse, it still can reproduce itself in great quantities within a short time.
We come to know that "I Love You" virus often attacks computers on Mondays and that it is spreading to many computers in the world. Among the countries that suffered computer viruses last year are Britain Australia, Switzerland and the U.S. Those who made the computer viruses have been found out slowly and carefully. How to protect children Web fans from unsuitable material on-line while encouraging them to use the Internet has long been discussed in the US.
For some parents, the Internet seems like a jungle, filled with danger for their children. But jungles contain wonders as well as danger and with good guides, some education, and a few precautions(预防), the wilds of the Internet can be safely navigated. “Kids have to be on—line. If we tell our kids they can’t be allowed to surf the Internet, we’re cutting them off from their future,” said an expert.
Most kids have started to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting Internet sites, and they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go. There are search engines designed just for kids. A certain software contains only sites that have been selected as safe. The most popular way would be to use what is known as a “content screener”. But this can’t be wholly reliable, and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what is Ok or not OK to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that mum or dad is nearby when the child is surfing the Internet.
A few other tips:(1)Don’t put the PC in a child’s room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye on things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity.(2)Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make on –line.(3)Tell your child not to give on –line strangers personal information, especially like address and phone number.
And tell your children never to talk to anyone they meet on—line over the phone, send them anything, accept anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go along.

55. What is the main subject about the passage? ____.
A. Opposing children’s on—line. B. Internet in America.
C. American children going on—line.
D. Appreciating the Internet.
56.Which of the following is right according to the passage? ____.
A. Surfing the Internet is the best way of educating children.
B. Using a content screener is most reliable for keeping children having ways to the Internet.
C. Searching engines can replace parents to select materials fit for them.
D. Children’s not having chances to go to the Internet may block their progress.
57. According to the passage, we can infer that ____.
A. softwares fit for children want programming.
B. the Internet contains a lot of harmful sites.
C. the Internet will develop better.
D. a child who is on—line will learn a lot
58.What does the passage tell us most about children on—line? ____.
A. Education   B. Good guides   C. Interests D. software
                 C
He was the baby with no name. Found and taken from the north Atlantic 6 days after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, his tiny body so moved the salvage (救援) workers that they called him “our baby.” In their home port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, people collected money for a headstone in front of the baby's grave, carved with the words: “To the memory of an unknown child.” He has rested there ever since.
But history has a way of uncovering its secrets. On Nov. 5, this year, three members of a family from Finland arrived at Halifax and laid fresh flowers at the grave. “This is our baby,” says Magda Schleifer, 68, a banker. She grew up hearing stories about a great-aunt named Maria Panula,42, who had sailed on the Titanic for America to be reunited with her husband. According to the information Mrs. Schleifer had gathered, Panula gave up her seat on a lifeboat to search for her five children -- including a 13-month-old boy named Eino from whom she had become separated during the final minutes of the crossing. "We thought they were all lost in the sea," says Schleifer.
Now, using teeth and bone pieces taken from the baby's grave, scientists have compared the
DNA from the Unknown Child with those collected from members of five families who lost relatives on the Titanic and never recovered the bodies. The result of the test points only to one possible person: young Eino. Now, the family sees: no need for a new grave. "He belongs to the people of Halifax," says Schleifer. "They've taken care of him for 90 years."
Adapted from People, November 25, 2002

If US software companies don’t pay more attention to quality, they could kiss their business good-bye. Both India and Brazil are developing a world-class software industry. Their weapon is quality and one of their jobs is to attract the top US quality specialists whose voices are not listened to in their country.

Already, of the world’s 12 software houses that have earned the highest position in the world, seven are in India. That’s largely because they have used new methods American software specialists refused to use. For example, for years, quality specialists, W. Edwards Deming and J. M. Juran had tried to persuade US software companies to change their attitudes to quality. But their quality call mainly fell on deaf ears in the US—but not in Japan. In the 1970s and 1980s, Japan was taking its market share with better, cheaper products. They used Deming’s and Juran’s ideas to bring down the cost of good quality to as little as 5% of total production costs. In US factories, the cost of quality then was 10 times as high: 50%. In software, it still is.

Watts S. Humphrey spent 27 years at IBM heading up software production and then quality assurance(保证). But his advice was seldom paid attention to. He retired from IBM in 1986. In 1987, he worked out a system for assessing(评定) and improving software quality. It has proved its value time and again. For example, in 1990 the cost of quality at Raytheon Electronics Systems was almost 60% of total software production costs. It fell to 15% in 1996 and has since further dropped to below 10%.

Like Deming and Juran, Humphrey seems to be winning more praises overseas than at home. The Indian government and several companies have just founded the Watts Humphrey Software Quality Institute at the Software Technology Park in Chennai, India. Let’s hope that US lead in software will not be eaten up by its quality problems.

63.  Which country has the most first-class software companies in the world?

A. Germany B. The USA C. Brazil D. India

64. The underlined part “fell on deaf ears” (in paragraph 2) means “________”.

A. be of great importance B. be well received

A. He is now still an IBM employee.

B. He has worked for IBM for 37 years.

C. The US pays much attention to his quality advice.

D. India honors him highly.

66. Why did Japan take its large market share in the 1970s and 1980s?

A. Its products were cheaper in price and better in quality.

B.    Its advertising was successful.

C. Its hardware industry was developing well.

D. It hired a lot of Indian software specialists.

67. What is the writer worrying about?

A. Many US software specialists are working for Japan.

B. The quality problem has become a worldwide problem.

C. The US will lose the lead in software in the world.

D. India and Japan are joining hands to compete with the US.

On hearing the words “just do it!”, you will know there is a Nike product nearby. If it’s “Always Coca-Cola”, you can be sure someone wants to sell you a refreshing drink.

An advertising slogan is to a brand what eyes are to a person. The slogan helps people understand the brand better by telling them what it wants to sell to its customers. Good slogans leave a message inside people’s minds. It’s almost certain that every brand has a popular slogan.

  Here are a few examples:

“Just do it!”—this slogan speaks out to teens. It tells them to do something, but only it they think it’s worth it. And if so, why not do it wearing Nike?

“Always Coca-Cola.”—Coke’s slogans change every few years, but this one has enjoyed a lasting popularity because it shows the brand’s spirit. It seems to say “Coke is the only drink there is; there are no other forms of drinks.”

“Share moments, share life.”—This slogan form Kodak connects photos and beauty. It asks people to remember the happy moments in life by taking photos of them—using Kodak film of course!
