A    Tracking stations

One night in February 1962, John H. Glenn, Jr., flew over Australia. The man in the Mercury(水星) capsule(宇宙飞行容器)was alone, but friendly voices reached him by radio. Over the dark land 100 miles below, he saw sparkling lights. It marked the city of Perth, where people had turned on their lights as a greeting to him.

In Friendship 7, Glenn radioed,” The lights show up very well. Thank everybody for turning them on.” His capsule needed on to the east.

During his three orbits of the earth, Glenn could always reach one of the eighteen tracking stations. Some of them were on ships at sea. Others were in the United States.

Many of the stations had been built with the help of other countries. These countries allowed Americans to bring in radio equipment and set it up. Without the help of such lands as Nigeria, Zanzibar, and Mexico, there would have been breaks in the worldwide radio network. John Glenn, Jr., was the first American to orbit the earth. For his flight, the tracking network( 跟踪网络)covered 60,000 land or statute miles(法定英里). Five hundred men worked in the stations along the route. Since his flight, the network has grown. Today, it covers more than 100,000 statute or land miles and has about one hundred stations. One-third of these stations are outside the United States.

My husband had just bought a new washing machine for me. I decided to use it and I washed a lot of things.

Everything worked well, but I found one of my husband’s socks missing. I looked everywhere for it, but I couldn’t find it anywhere.

The next morning, I got ready for school as usual. When the bell rang, the students came in. I greeted them first and then told them what we were going to do that day.

When I turned around to write on the blackboard, the class broke out a roar!

They laughed and laughed. They laughed so much, in fact, that I was afraid the headmaster would be into seeing all this.

I asked the class to stop, but the more I talked, the more they laughed. I decided to pay no attention to them and I continued to write on the blackboard. When I did this, they roared even more.

Finally, the teacher who had the room next to mine came in to see what all the laughter was about. When he came in, he started laughing, too!

“Good heavens,” I said. “Will someone please tell me what is so funny?’

“Oh, God,” said the teacher. “You have a brown sock to the back of your skirt!”

So that’s how I found my husband’s missing sock.

“Oh, well,” I said to the class. “Let’s just say you have had an unforgettable lesson on static electricity.”

63. Why couldn’t she find one of her husband’s socks?

A. Because some students had hidden it.

B. Because her husband had taken it away.

C. Because she had left it in the classroom.

D. Because she never expected that it would stick to her skirt.

64. Why did the teacher from the next room laugh?

A. Because the whole class laughed.

B. Because he saw the writer fooled by the class.

  C. Because he saw some of the students making faces.

   D. Because he found a sock on the back of the writer’s skirt.

E-mail systems at thousands of companies and government offices around the world were attacked by a virus called “Mellissa” that disguises itself as “important message” from a friend.

Even though there was a weekend warning, more than 50000 companies at about 100 places around the world have been attacked by the virus, computer experts said on Monday.

The virus began to show up last Friday and spread rapidly the next first workday by making computers send off dozens of e-mails containing the virus. Although the virus had no long-lasting damage to a computer, its effects were far-reaching.

Michael Vatis, a senior US official said military and government computers were damaged, along with thousands of the other institution’s systems.

The body of e-mail message says, “here is what you ask for---“once the user opens it, the virus digs into the user’s address book and sends out messages to the first 50 address. The reason why the virus spreads so rapidly is that you’re getting it from people you know and trust. So anyone who gets an unexpected e-mail with the “Important Message” subject line is advised not to open it and to delete it immediately.

  A. Monday B. Saturday C. Friday D. the first day of the month

C. it digs into the user’s address book and sends out messages to the first 50 addresses

D. it attacks military and government offices.

.68 The underlined word “disguises” in the first paragraph means _______.

  A. discover B. cover C. paint D. notice

69. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

  A. The computer attacked by the virus won’t work properly.

  B. Thousands of computers were attacked by the virus one by one.

  C. The “Important Message” carries important message from a friend

  D. Any computer with an e-mail system will be attacked by the virus.

70. Which of the following is the best title for this article?

   A. Stop Using Your Computers B. “Important Message” Is A Virus

One possible version:

Dear Lihua

I’m writing to tell you the discussion that has been held in our school about Super girls’ voice. Recently many people especially high school students have been fascinated by a singing competition “Super girls’ voice”, which was held by Hunan TV Stations.

Some students supporting it think highly of the competition. They think it has offered a wonderful stage to ordinary but well singing girls to show their singing talents in public, and encourages people to pursue their dreams. What’s more, they can also develop their sense of competing during competitions.

On the other hand, the others don’t agree with them. They think a series of competitions costs lots of time and money. As most of girls are still students who should concentrate on their study at present, taking part in it is not good for their further progress.

In my opinion, it is just a successful program, which has attracted lots of audience’s attention. But seeing a bunch of girls with passion try hard to realize their dreams in the competition, we are inspired to study harder to be “Super Girls” or “Super Boys” too, just as competitors.

Yours truly,

Li Lei
