Today’s teen consumer market is the most profitable it has ever been. Even though 65% of teens claim that they rely on themselves for their fashion ideas, it is estimated that less than 20% of the teen population is innovative enough to drive fashion trends, according to a recent study by a marketing firm. Marketers recognize this fact and often use elements of youth culture to promote their products. Perhaps one of the best examples is their use of hip-hop culture. It is reported that hip-hop fashion alone generates $750 million to $1 billion annually. Sales of rap music and videos each exceed that amount.
Rap’s rise and sustained global popularity is a good illustration of how influential youth culture is on youth attitudes and behavior. Remember when Madonna hit the charts with her bra in full view while singing about “virginity”? Soon after that, adolescent girls around the world began wearing their underwear outside their clothes.
Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger was fully aware of the power of youth culture. He marketed his brand by giving clothes to famous MTV stars and featuring teen stars in his print ads. Picking up on teens’ interest in computer games, Hilfiger sponsored a Nintendo competition and installed Nintendo terminals in his stores. The payoff? Teens rated Hilfiger jeans as their number one brand in a survey in 2000.

B. Between $750 million and $1 billion
C. Between $500 million and $750 million
D. Less than $500 million
51.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A. The purchasing power of teenagers has been decreasing over the years.
B. Many teenagers make a lot of profits in the fashion market today.
C. Madonna led the fashion of wearing underwear outside clothes.
D. Marketers recognize youth culture as a part of hip-hop culture.
52.It can be inferred from the passage that Hilfiger _________
A. believed that MTV stars could drive fashion trends among teens
B. sold Nintendo terminals together with teen’s clothes in his stores
C. sponsored a Nintendo competition out of his own interest in computer games
D. was rated by teens and adults as the best designer of jeans around the world in 2000

Walking through any high school in the first class in the morning, you may find many students are struggling to stay awake.
“They are sitting in the classroom, but their heads are at home on their pillows”, says Mary Carskadon of Brown Medical School in the US.
Don’t blame them; blame the clock in their brains. Research suggests that biological clocks push teens to stay up at night and sleep in the morning. Many suffer from jet lag (时差)between their internal clocks and the external world.
During the first several weeks of school, students are more likely to get a lack of sleep. In the holidays, students can sleep eight hours a night. But during the school day, students on average sleeps only about six hours. Students lose 10 hours of sleep per week they never recover from. The lack of sleep may not only be a drag on school performance, but may be related to poor health.
Scientists in the US led research to try to help them fall asleep earlier. They found the brain can produce a chemical that helps sleep. It comes out only in the dark. So they use a special light in the classroom to try to force a reset of the students’ biological clock.
The research failed at the end. So some schools in the US have reset their school time from 7:25 to 8:30 am to suit the students. The results were promising. The hour extension help students perform better in class.
53.. The reason why many students may be found sleepy in the first class in the morning is that ___ .

B. they don’t like their teacher
C. they sleep less hours than they need
D. they are ill
54. According to the passage we can learn that ___ .

C. The sleeping students work deep into the night
D. Falling asleep late makes students sleepy in the class
55. Which of the following is not true?
A. The sleeping students in the first class should have their brains examined.
B. Scientists did research to help the sleepy students but failed.
C. Some schools in the US begin their classes in the morning later than before.
D. Students shall have about eight sleeping hours during the school day.
56. The main idea of the passage is that ____ .
A. Students often sleep in the first in the morning.
B. Students are too tired to fall asleep at night.
C. Sleepyhead in the first class, it is not the students’ fault.
D. Scientists did some research on students’ sleep.

If there is any single factor that makes for success in living, it is the ability to profit by defeat. Every success I know have achieved because the person was able to analyze defeat and actually profit by it in his next undertaking. Confuse defeat with failure, and you are doomed (注定) indeed to failure. For it isn’t defeat that makes you fail: it is your own refusal to see in defeat the guide and encouragement to success.
Defeats are nothing to be ashamed of. They are routine incidents in the life of every man who achieves success. But defeat is a dead loss unless you face it without humiliation, analyze(分析) it and learn why you have failed. Defeat, in other words, can help to cure its own cause. Not only does defeat prepare us for success, but nothing can arouse within us such a compelling desire to succeed. If you let a baby grasp a rod and try to pull it away, he will hold more and more tightly until his whole weight is suspended. It is the same reaction as should give you new and greater strength every time you are defeated. If you exploit the power which defeats give, you can accomplish with it far more than you are capable of.
57. The person who is able to analyze his defeat is likely ___ .
A. to be more capable of doing things
B. to be a successor
C. to be ashamed of his defeat
D. to know himself better
58. Defeat is valuable because ___ .
A. it makes you a better thinker
B. it forces you to face it without humiliation
C. it provides the guide to achievement.
D. It enables you to analyze events successfully
59. It is implied in the passage that ___ .
A. the author thinks there is only one factor which makes for success in living
B. defeat necessarily leads to success
C. people often confuse defeat with failure
D. we must face defeat courageously
60. What is the author’s attitude towards defeat?
A. One of being ashamed.
B. One of being interested.
C. One of being discouraged.
D. One of being hopeful.
第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,请将文后标有A-D的小标题插入标号为61至65题中,使短文连贯完整,其中有一选项是多余的。
61.______
Can you see the rabbit’s tail? When a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. It runs away. Its tail, which is white, moves up and down as it runs. The other rabbits see this white tail moving up and down, and they run too. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal.
62. ______
Many other animals use this kind of language. When a cobra is angry, it raises its hook makes itself look fierce. This warns other animals. When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance. The dance tells the other bees where the food is.
63. _____
Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for instance, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs when pleased. Some birds make several sounds, each with its own meaning. Sometimes we human beings speak in the same way. We make like “Oh!” or “Ah” when we are frightened or pleased or when we drop something on our toes!
64. _____
But we have something that no animal has—a large number of words which have the meanings of things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information, to tell other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remember for a long time things that have happened, or send messages to people far away. Moreover, a person can increase his vocabulary at will as he learns or invents new words, whereas an animal’s vocabulary is limited to range that his biological structure determines.
65. _____
No one knows how man learned to make words. Perhaps he began by making sounds like those made by animals. Perhaps he grunted like a pig when he lifted something heavy. Perhaps he made sounds like those he heard all around him-water splashing, bees humming, a stone falling and imitated them to make words. As the centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.
A. The Communication among Other Kinds of Animals
B. Expressing by Making Sounds
C. Possible Origins of Language
D. An Example of Using Signals
E. Importance of Language
F. The Human Language

Opinions are divided on this question. Some students may like elderly teachers' teaching because they think elderly teachers have more teaching experience and that they tend to be patient and careful with explanations. However, I prefer to be taught by young teachers. Firstly, we students have much in common with them. So they are our friends as well as our teachers. Secondly, they are more .energetic and enthusiastic. Usually they can make their classes lively and interesting. Besides, they are more ready to accept or create new ideas, including teaching. Thirdly, most young teachers devote themselves to their work, making them teach creatively and effectively.
In a word, I prefer young teachers to elderly teachers.
