The measure of a man’s real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

——Thomas Macaulay

Some thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York. One day, Mrs Nanette O’Neill gave an arithmetic  21  to our class. When the papers were  22  she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the same mistakes throughout the test.

There is nothing really new about  23  in exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs O’neill  24  even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to  25 after class. I was one of the twelve.

Mrs O’Neill asked  26  questions, and didn’t  27  us, either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the  28  words by Thomas Macaulay. She then ordered us to  29  these words into our exercise-books one hundred times.

I don’t  30  about the other eleven boys. Speaking for myself I can say: it was the most important single  31  of my life. Thirty years after being introduced  32  Macaulay’s words, they  33  seem to me the best yardstick(准绳), because they give us a  34  to measure ourselves rather that others.

Few of us are asked to make  35  decisions about nations going to war or armies going to battle. But all of us are called  36  daily to make a great many personal decisions. Should the wallet, found in street, be put into a pocket  37  turned over to the policeman? Should the  38  change received at the store be forgotten or  39 ? Nobody will know except you. But you have to live with yourself, and it is always  40  to live with someone you respect.

The failed Skylab will come screaming home to earth in disappointment sometime next month, but it will fall we know not where.

That precise information is beyond even the calculations of scientists and their computers.

The best they can tell us is that the space station, weighing 77 tons and as high as a 12-story building, will break into hundreds of pieces that will be scattered across a track 100 miles wide and 4,000 miles long.

We are again exposed to one of those unexpected adventures, or misadventures, of science that attracts our attention from the boring routines of daily existence and encourages us to think a lot about man’s future.

What worries Richard Smith, the Skylab’s director, is the “big pieces” that will come through the atmosphere. Two lumps, weighing 2 tons each, and ten, weighing at least 1,000 pounds each, will come in at speeds of hundreds of miles an hour, and if they crash on land they will dig holes up to 100 feet deep.

What worries us, with our lack of scientific knowledge and our quick imagination, is both the big and little pieces, although project offcials say there is a very small chance that anyone will be injured by them.

That’s good to know, but it doesn’t remove the doubts of the millions who still remember the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island. That accident took place in 1979 in spite of what scientists had assured us as to the safety of the nuclear reactor(反应堆)

44. Where the Skylab will fall .

  A. is kept secret B. will be announced soon

  C. is foretold by scientists D. can’t be foretold

  C. as 12 big pieces and hundreds of smaller pieces

  D. as an attractive scene to millions of people

46. The author refers to Three Mile Island .

  A. because he fears that a piece of the Skylab may strike a nuclear power plant.

  B. as a doubtful comment on the offcials’ words

  C. because he is afraid of unclear power

  D. because the nuclear reactor there and the Skylab were built by the same company

47. The author expresses his .

  A. interest in the failure of the Skylab.

  B. willingness to give his advice

  C. doubtful attitude toward scientists

  D. eagerness to see more new scientific discoveries

C

As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week.

Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long hours work culture to make more money to buy more things is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them. Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year.

One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs(郊区), leaving their two children with a nanny(保姆). Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until eight or nine o’clock and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.

Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have a farm then,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s been worth it. We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.”

Liz, however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”

48. What do the first two paragraphs tell us?

  A. People seldom work long hours to make money.

  B. People hardly buy more things than necessary.

  C. People are sure everything they own is in the right place.

  D. People realize there is more to life than just making money.

  C. missed his children D. was well paid

  A. was easy to organize B. has improved family life

  C. was extremely expensive D. has been a total success

51. What does the underlined “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

  A. Child caring. B. Liz’s advice.

  C. Downshifting. D. Liz’s job.

52. The underlined word “downshifting” in the second paragraph means    .

  A. repairing your car by yourself B. spending money carefully

  C. moving out to the countryside to live a simpler and better life

  D. living in a big house in the suburbs and dining out once a week

Although hurricane season doesn’t begin until June 1, a Pacific storm has already stuck. El Salvador, which was ruined by a Caribbean storm in 1995, was hit by Hurricane Adrian on Friday. This is the first Pacific-born hurricane to ever reach land in this Central American country.

Some 14,000 people left from the western coast of El Salvador. the storm weakened as it crossed land, heading east. Heavy rains created deadly flooding problems in the hurricane’s wake.

Adrian is the first Pacific storm of the season. It reported maximum continuous winds of 75 miles per hour, the minimum strength of a hurricane. Adrain also caused damage and flooding in Honduras. It is expected to break up before reaching the Caribbean Sea on the eastern coast of Central America.

Hurricane season typically begins June 1 and lasts through November 30. the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) has predicted(预告) seven to nine hurricanes for the 2005 season.

“It is difficult to make any kind of an exact prediction of how many of these will strike land,” NOAA administrator Conrad Lautenbacher said. He predicts two to three hurricanes will strike the U.S. this season.

Last year, six of nine hurricanes reached Category 3 strength or higher. Four of those hit Florida within a six-week perild. Altogether, Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne caused more than $40 billion in damage in the Sunshine State.

This year’s forecast is based on ocean temperatures. Warmer temperatures produce more tropical storms, which can then turn into hurricanes.

“The issue, really, this year is the unusually warm sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic,” said Frank Lepore of the National Hurricane Center.

53. Which of the following is the 2005 first hurricane?

  A. Charley. B. Adrian. C. Jeanne. D. Frances.

54. How many countries struck by the hurricane are mentioned in the text?

  A. Six. B. Nine. C. Five. D. Three.

55. We can infer that warmer ocean temperatures .

  A. have nothing to do with the hurricane.

  B. cause less hurricane

  C. are more likely to cause the hurricanes

  D. do a lot of damage to the areas along the coast

56. The passage implies that .

  A. hurricane season comes early this year

  B. every hurricane formed in oceans could cause great damage to the land

  C. hurricane often comes in winter and spring

  D. tropical storm is more severe than hurricane

E

Advertising gives useful imformation about which products to buy. But modern advertising does more than gives news about products and services. Today’s advertisements, or ads, try to get consumers(消费者) to buy certain brands(品牌). Writers of advertising are so skillful that they can sometimes persuade a consumer to wear a certain kind of clothing, eat a special kind of cereal(麦片), or see a movie. Consumers might never even want a product if they did not see or hear advertisements for it.

For example, you probably do not need the newest cereal in the supermarket. There are probably many cereal brands on your kitchen shelves. You may not have space on your shelf for another. But if you see ads about a new cereal that is your extra tasty and has a free price in the box, you may want it. Advertising must get people’s attention. To be effective, it must be exciting, entertaining, or provide some pleasure. The secret of writing good advertising copy is to offer a good idea as well as a product. The idea is what the ad is really selling. One example is an ad that says eating a certain cereal will make a person do well in sports. That cereal brand may sell better if consumers think it offers strength and energy.

57. What is discussed in this passage?

  A. The content of modern advertising.

  B. The skill of modern advertising.

  C. The results of modern advertising.

  D. The writing of modern advertising.

58. According to the passage, a good advertisement should .

  A. be both persuasive and effective

  B. give people useful information

  C. show people a product

  D. show people a new idea of a product

59. From the passage, we can infer that     .

  A. modern advertising has less effect on customers

  B. once customers see ads about a new cereal, they are sure to buy it

  C. cereal can make people strong

  D. cereal is a kind of food which is popular among people

60. What can we infer from the passage?

  A. Customers can easily be persuaded by advertisements.

  B. Customers should be persuaded by advertisements.

  C. It’s impossible for customers to buy a product without advertisements.

  D. Customers buy products according to their demands rather than the advertisements.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Space travel

There are several advantages of space travel. First of all, it could provide man with new places to live in and new sources of materials. In addition, space travel helps people to understand the universe better. Also space travel research does good to other areas.

However, space travel also has some disadvantages. It uses up money which could be better spent in other ways. What’s more, the idea of man living on other planets is unrealistic. Also space travel could be dangerous.

In conclusion, though there are the disadvantages, I think space travel is a good thing. It is important for man to explore and learn about the universe.
