In the 19th century, Americans from the eastern States moved out west to settle in the rich new lands along the Pacific Coast. The most difficult part of their trip was crossing the “Great American Desert” in the western part of the United States by horse and wagon.
The western desert can be very dangerous. There is little water and there are few trees. But the desert also has scenery of great beauty. Tall towers of red and yellow stone rise sharply from the flat, sandy valley floor. The scene has been photographed many times and appears in movies and on TV.
In Arizona, man-made dams across the Colorado River have made two large lakes in the middle of the dry desert country. At Lake Powell, the red stone arch(拱状物) of Rainbow Bridge rises high above the blue lake.
There are few roads. Many areas of Lake Powell’s shore can only be reached by boat or on foot. But hikers (travellers on foot) in this empty desert land sometimes find very old native American pictures, painted on the rocks.
In Death Valley, California, the summer temperature rises to 130°—165°F. There is less than two inches of rain each year. Death Valley is the lowest place in America—925 metres below sea level. In the 1800s, many travellers died when they tried to cross this waterless valley in the terrible heat.
Although the desert is dry and seems empty, there is plenty of life if you look closely. Snakes, rats have learned how to live in the desert heat. They live underground and come out at night, when it is cool. Plants such as cacti (仙人掌) need very little water. When it does rain in the desert (sometimes only once or twice a year), plants grow quickly, and flowers open in a single day. For a short time, the desert is covered with brilliant (very bright) colours.

Almost one in three of all deaths in 1990s commercial (商业的) jet aircraft accidents were on flights operated by Asian airlines, specialist magazine Orient Aviation said Asia accounted for 2, 480 or nearly 30.1 percent of 8,251 jet aircraft fatalities(死亡人数) from 1990 to 1999.
The magazine said a review of crash records had bad effect on Asia’s whole performance in spite of having some of the world’s safest aircrafts.
There are more fatalities than elsewhere, more non-fatal accidents and a crash ratio to departures(起飞坠机比率) higher than the world average,” Orient Aviation said.
“The numbers clearly show why Asia has built up a bad name in the air safety field,” the magazine said.
Rapid traffic growth has led to problems that Asia’s aviation infrastructure(航空基础设施) is unable to deal successfully with the pressure placed on it.
Korean Air has had a number of crashes in the 1990s. The worst occurred in 1997 when a 747 blew into a hillside in Guam, killing 226 of 254 people on board.
So has Taiwan’s China Airlines. The latest crash at Taipei’s international airport in February 1998 killed all 196 people on board and 6 on the ground.

Standing in the hall of a luxury hotel, I received the guests, one by one. “Good afternoon, Mr Smith,” I said in way of greeting.
“Oh, I dreamed in English! I can dream in English!” I cried when I awoke that morning.
This happened in 1992, when I was a college senior, after just passing the CET-4 English certification examination(大学英语四级考试). Since then, I have dreamed many in English often.
Dreaming in a foreign language is a sign that one has made great progress in learning that language. I believe the factor which contributed (促进) most to my improvement in English was reading aloud.

After graduation, I didn’t stop my efforts to learn English. Instead, I took up reading aloud the 21st Century, the TV Guide and English novels.
Reading aloud has helped me very much with grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and of course, speaking.
While reading, I always imagine the scene in the article and think of myself as the writer or one of the characters of the story. If it is funny, I laugh; and if it is sad or moving, I shed tears. Perhaps because of this, I have been fortunate enough to dream in English.
I remember one dream in which I talked with Bill Gates, Microsoft Corp CEO(比尔·盖茨,微软公司总裁).

Take a trip across America, by way of an advice column (专栏), and you’ll find plenty worth celebrating. I once asked my readers in the Chicago Sun-Times, where I took the place of Ann Landers, to name the person to whom they would say “I owe you one.” Victor La Porte, 45, wrote to me from his hospital bed about his kid brother, Tony.
