To be sure , only children experience some things differently from those with siblings(兄弟姐妹).Many feel more pressure to succeed. In the absence of brothers and sisters, only children are also likely to look more exclusively to their parents as role models.
In India , 19 year old Saviraj Sankpal founded a support group for the tiny number of only children .Among other things , the group does volunteer work to be against the myth(神话)that they’re irresponsible(不负责任的).” People think we’re pampered(娇惯)and spoiled,” says Sankpal, a computer engineering student. “ But I’d like to remind them how lonely it can get.”
Most only children, however, say they wish for siblings only when it comes to caring for aging, unhealthy parents. Britain’s David Emerson, coauthor of the book The only child, says that such a person bears terrible burden in having to make all the decisions alone. Emerson knows from experience: After his father died, he chose to move his elderly mother from their family home, where she was vulnerable(易受攻击的)to house breakers, to a new one with more safety. “ The move was quite hard on her, and she might feel that I pushed her into it,” he says. “Finally, I am left with that responsibility”
In the future, more and more only children will likely face similar choices. With working mothers increasing, many families are finding they simply don’t have the time, money or energy to have more than one child. As only children become common, perhaps the world will realize that accusation(指责)made against them is unfair.

Ashley and Chris work in the same department designing postcards. Chris had a college degree in art and deeply felt that the degree of his designs was excellent. Chris last postcard showed the depth of a desert’s beauty and delights.

The battle heats up between the U.S. and Europe over genetically modified food. The staff at McDonald’s could not have expected an especially warm reception in France. But the manure(粪便) in the parking lots still must have taken them by surprise. For the past three weeks it’s been hard to visit a McDonald’s anywhere in France without running the risk of meeting with mountains of fresh manure as well as, lots of fruit and vegetables dumped in front of the restaurants by protesting farmers.
There’s a lot about McDonald’s that angers the farmers. Protesters are finding even more to dislike about the uniquely American food, especially the very genes that make the McDonald’s beef or bun or potato what it is.
Around the world people are taking a closer look at the genetic make-up of what they’re eating and growing uneasy with what they see. Over the past decade , genetically modified(GM) food has become an increasingly common phenomenon as scientists have rewoven the genes of countless fruits and vegetables, turning everyday crops into crops able to resist severe cold, insects, and even produce their own pesticides.
For biotech companies such as Monsanto based in the U.S., and Novartis AG, based in Switzerland , the rise of GM technology has meant boom times. Scales of GM seeds rose in value from 875 million in 1995 to 81.5 billion last year, and the crops they produce are turning up not only on produce shelves but also in processed foods from cookies to potato chips to baby food.
But many people question whether it’s a good idea for human being to eat those food. Up to now, there’s nothing to suggest that GM foods have even done anyone any harm. Nonetheless ,the European union has blocked the import of some GM products, and since 1997 has required that foods containing engineered DNA be labeled as such . At the same
time, US Congress also addressed a labeling bill of its own later this year, and some private groups are threatening court action to force the issue. Even without legal action, public opinion is turning a more doubtful eye on GM technology.

Sigmund Freud, the world-famous doctor of Vienna, was a thinker who changed the way we look at mental trouble. He was also a man with guts(胆量).
Once Freud was walking down a dark street. He was met by two toughs who wanted to mug(行凶)him. This was back in 1890. Freud took his cane by the tip and beat off the muggers.
He did not lose his cool when the Nazis came to his house. The Nazi soldiers found 1,500 shillings (about $250) in a drawer. Their sergeant(中士)put the money in his pocket. He wrote out a receipt, clicked his heels, and was about to leave. “you’re very luck”, said Dr.Freud.
“Why?” asked the young sergeant.
“Well,” said the professor, as he was called, “I’ve been a doctor here in Vienna for 40 years, and I never got 1,500shillings for just one visit.”
Freud had guts. He also had a sense of humor. Once, at his 70th birthday party a relative asked Freud if he could put his work into simple words. “ Well,” said the professor, “We take the patient out of his mental trouble, and return him to the common misery.”
Freud had three sisters. They had never married. They each lived in a small apartment. Freud and his brother paid the sisters’ bill. The sisters lived simply. The brother asked Uncle Sigi (as Freud was called in his large family )if the sisters could live together .“It’s logical,” said the brother, “it would save money.”
Freud said,“ Yes, it is logical, but it wouldn’t be psychological.” The sisters kept their own apartments, and the idea was dropped.
Freud was a devoted son . His mother used to spend her summers in Ischl, a small mountain town in Austria The Emperor Franz Josef used to spend his summers in Ischl, too.
Grandma Freud, as she was called by the family, used to sit at the window and watch the crowds on Main Street. Freud was visiting his mother on her 95th birthday. The band was playing a lively tune . The old lady’s memory must have failed her. She heard the band playing , but forgot it was the Emperor’s birthday. The professor told his mother, “Mama, the band is playing for your birthday.” She believed him and had a wonderful day.

Xiao Ming and his grandma were walking on their way home when they felt thirsty and bought two ice creams. After enjoying the ice creams, Xiao Ming threw the stick into the dustbin, meanwhile, his grandma threw it on the ground naturally. Having seen it, Xiao Ming picked up the stick and littered it into the dustbin. Grandma felt ashamed and spoke highly of Xiao Ming.
What a good boy! Child as he was, he set up a good example for us to follow. If every one of us does as Xiao Ming did, we can imagine how harmonious the society will be. No matter who we are, we can really contribute ourselves to building the Harmonious Society. Compared with the whole society, a person perhaps won’t have an opportunity to create a great cause. But if we paid more attention to some tiny things around us, we would offer a little to the development of the Harmonious Society.
