The following letter from President Wilson to Edith Bolling Galt was written just over two months before they were married.

                   [The White House] Sunday,
9:10 A.M., 3 Oct., 1915

My precious Darling,

The more we are together the more I love you, the more I need to have you always with me, and the more inadequate written words become to speak my heart to you, -- the more impatient I grow of the pen, the more eager to whisper the love that floods my heart into my Darling's lips as I hold her close in my arms. And yet the more necessary does it become to relieve my heart with some message of love, even if it be only written. Please go to ride with us this evening, precious little girl, so that I can whisper something in your ear -- something of my happiness and love, and accept this, in the meantime, as a piece out of my very heart, which is all yours but cannot be sent as I wish to send it by letter. It has to be presented in person. I cannot express in written words, either, the happiness you gave me last night. How unspeakably lovely and delightful you are, and how altogether satisfying -- and how empty and lonely the house is without you. You carry away its light and its home-likeness whenever you leave it. It seems to yearn(思念) for you as I do. I love, love, love you.

Your own

56. When he was writing the letter, we can infer that the writer’s mood was _____.

  A. nervous B. joyful C. depressed D. calm

57. How does the writer wish to express his happiness and love to the girl?

  A. by letter. B. by email. C. in person. D. by others.

58. The main purpose of the letter is to ___________.

  A. invite the girl to ride with him

B. express his deep love to the girl

C. express the happiness the girl brought him

D. meet her at once

59. Why does the man feel impatient of the pen?

  A. Because his pen writes too slowly.

B. Because he cannot think out more to write.

C. Because he is so eager to express the love that the pen can’t do that immediately.

D. Because he wants to express his love in front of the girl.

In a bay near Southern Spain the first underwater house for tourists in the world will be built. The hotel will be 40 feet down in the Mediterranean. As all the world opened to tour operators, there was still a frontier behind which lay three quarters of the globe’s surface, the sea; in whose cool depths light fades; no winds blow; there are no stars. There even the most bored travelers could catch their sense of romance, terror or beauty again. For a submerged(水下的) hotel is such a beautiful idea.
The hotel will cost $170,000 and will be able to accommodate(提供住宿) up to ten people a night. Up till now only scientists and professional divers have lived under the sea, but soon, for the first time, the public will be able to go down into the darkness. They will have to swim down in diving suits, but at 40 feet there would be no problem about decompression (解除压力).
Design of the hotel was the most important. Most of the underwater structures used before had been in the shape of a diving bell or submarine. Professional divers could deal with such things successfully but ordinary people would run the risk of violent claustrophobia(幽闭恐怖).

Then an Austrian architect had the idea of making three interconnecting circular structures, 18 feet in diameter, and looking much like flying saucers. They would be cast in concrete(混凝土铸造物) and launched from the shore. Towed into position they would then be sunk. A foundation of cast concrete would already be in place on the sea-bed. Pylons would attach the structures to this. Once in position the structures would be pumped dry. The pylons made to withstand an uplift pressure of 350 tons, would then take the strain.
Cables linking the underwater structures to the hotel on shore would connect it with electricity, fresh water, television, and an air pump, and also get rid of waste water. Entry would be from underneath, up a ladder; because of the pressure inside there would be no need of airlocks or doors.
60. From the passage we understand that tour operators and travelers will be interested in the submerged hotel as _________.
A. it is a quiet place for research work
B. it is an ideal sea-food restaurant
C. it will offer new possibilities
D. it will have unchanging weather

61. What design was finally considered most suitable for the new hotel?
A. Three separated circles.
B. Three linked discs.

C. Three connected circles

D. Three interlocked cylinders

62. The hotel would be able to float under water because it would be _______.
A. made of light material
B. 350 tons in weight

C. filled with air
D. attached to pylons

63. The purpose of this passage is _______.

A. to introduce the design of a submerged hotel

B. to advertise the tour underwater

C. to tell people it’s very interesting to travel underwater

D. to describe a submerged hotel which has already been built

Citizens of War-Torn Congo Await outcome of Historic Elections

By Jerilyn Watson

Broadcast: Saturday, August 05, 2006

Citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo had to wait a long time for the elections last Sunday. It was the first time in almost a half-century that there were candidates from more than one party. Great numbers of people voted in the presidential and legislative elections. But a slow start to counting votes means another wait.

Early reports suggested that President Joseph Kabila faced his strongest competition from Vice President Jean-Pierre Bemba. More than thirty presidential candidates were on the ballot. If no one gets fifty percent of the vote, citizens will choose between the two top candidates in October.

President Kabila heads a large coalition(联合) of parties. Mister Bemba is a former leader of a rebel force. Several human rights groups have accused him of major violations. He is one of four vice presidents in a temporary government of national unity.

Almost ten thousand candidates competed for the five hundred seats in the national legislature. Thousands more ran for local legislatures.

Final results are not expected for about three weeks.

The United Nations helped organize the elections. U.N. peacekeeping troops and a force from Gabon assisted with security. The Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire, is a huge country in Central Africa with sixty million people.

 B. If one candidate gets more than half of the vote,

 D. If no more than two candidates were on the ballot,

66.What does the underlined word “ accuse” mean (in Para 3)?

 A praise B support C blame D hate

67.What can be inferred from the suggestion of early reports?

 A. Mr. Kabila and Mr. Bemba were the strongest competitors in the election.

 B. Mr. Kabila, president of Congo, will surely beat Mr. Bemba.

 C. Mr. Bemba, former leader of rebel force, will surely beat Mr. Kabila.

 D. The result of the presidential election will soon come out.

Chinese universities should focus on training more skilled workers, said Peking University Vice President Hai Wen at the University President's International Forum in Chengdu,.

In his opinion, Chinese universities pay more attention to theoretical education and don't train skilled workers; most universities offer majors based on teacher and professor resources, not on social needs. As China becomes an industrialized society, universities should not only educate researchers and managers, but also train skilled workers to support new industries. Hai pointed out that most majors focus on theory and lack practical applications. As a result, universities lag behind in economic reform .

President Hai also said that junior community colleges in the United States, which were established to help citizens find jobs after World War Two, provide a good example of how China could produce more blue-collar workers; students attach little value to China's junior colleges, while in the US junior community colleges have lower tuitions, are easily accessible, provide more job opportunities for graduates, and consist of 41 percent of the country's 3,000 post-secondary educational facilities.

But only 31 percent of netizens support Hai ---according to statistics posted on sina.com, believing that if universities took on the job of trade schools, not only would skilled workers be better trained, they would also have the same status as white collar workers, which, as pillars(栋梁) of society, is something they deserve.

Sixty five percent of netizens opposed Hai, believing that training blue collar workers is a task for trade schools, as it would be a waste of time and money for students to pay high tuition fees to attend university to end up with a blue collar job.

Still others said universities should focus on the needs of society, and if various schools are responsible for different tasks, and then students of all levels can be trained to meet the needs of society.

68.According to the Vice President Hai, what’s the most important task of university education?

A passing on the theoretical education

B training well—educated scholars and managers

C training practically skilled workers

D training white-collar workers

69. Which of the following sentences doesn’t belong to the differences between China's junior colleges and US junior community colleges?

A. US junior community colleges have lower tuitions.

B. US junior community colleges have more job opportunities for graduates

C. US junior community colleges produces more blue-collar workers

D US junior community colleges take up more than half of the country's post-secondary educational facilities.

70. What does the underlined phrase “take on” (in Para 4)mean?

 A. Put on. B. Undertake. C. Employ. D. Continue.

71. What’s the writer’s attitude towards Vice President Hai’s opinion?

 A. Support. B. Oppose. C. Be neutral. D. Not mentioned.

 第二节:书面表达(满分25分)

Possible version:

The past few years have witnessed a growing surge of interest in buying lottery tickets, especially in large cities. As you can see from the chart,…

70 percent of those polled in a survey, held in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing, claimed to have dreamed of winning a fortune of 5 million yuan. About 80 percent of those polled in Guangzhou had had such a dream, while the number in Shanghai and Beijing is 60 percent respectively.
The explanation for the phenomenon involves several factors. First of all, more and more people regard personal wealth as a positive thing. In addition, as the market economy and the living standards of the people improve in China, people find themselves in greater need of money to deal with all kinds of expenses. As the survey shows, if they win a big lottery, 81.3% of people would buy a new house, 61.9% would buy a car, and 61.7% would save the money for their kids’ education. And a great part of people would put the money in the bank or use it for investment or touring.

In my opinion, the desire for money is not the bad thing. Actually, it may push many people to work hard and thus to contribute to the national progress.
