College graduation brings both the satisfaction of academic achievement and the expectation of a well-paid job.
But for 6,000 graduates at San Jose State this year, there’s uncertainty(不确定) as they enter one of the worst job markets in decades. Ryan Stewart has a freshly received degree in religious studies, but no job prospects(前景).
“You look at everybody’s parents and neighbors, and they are getting laid off and don’t have jobs,” said Stewart. “Then you look at the young people just coming into the workforce… it’s just scary.”
When the class of 2003 entered college the future never looked brighter. But in the four years they’ve been here, the world outside has changed dramatically(巨大地).
“Those were the exciting times, lots of opportunities, exploding offers, students getting top dollar with lot of benefits,” said Chery Allmen-Vinnidge, of the San Jose State Career Center. “Times have changed now. It’s a new market.”
Chery Allmen-Vinnidge ought to know. She runs the San Jose State Career Center, a sort of a crossroads between college and the real world. Allmen-Vinnidge says students who do find jobs after college have done their homework.
“The typical graduate who does have a job offer started working on it two years ago. They’ve prepared themselves well during the summer. They’ve had several internships(实习),”she said.
And they’ve majored in one of the few fields that are still hot—like chemical engineering, accounting, or nursing — where average starting salaries have actually increased over last year. Other popular fields (like information systems management, computer science, and political science) have seen big declines in starting salaries.
Ryan Stewart ( he had hoped to become a teacher) may just end up going back to school.
“ I’d like to teach college some day and that requires more schooling, which would be great in a dad economy.” he said.
To some students a degree may not be ticket to instant wealth. For now, they can only hope its value will increase over time.

Imagine yourself in a small airplane 3,300 meters above the ground. The engines roar in your ears as you move towards the open door. Then you’re outside, falling with the wind whipping past your ears. As the ground rushes up at you, you open your parachute. It explodes over your head, jerking(猛拉)you back and upwards. All in all, you were in free fall for only 30 seconds—the longest 30 seconds of your life.
For most of us, skydiving is something we only see in the movies, but a growing number of adventures are taking the plunge. Obviously, skydiving isn’t something you can just try, like fishing or bowling. So, if you want to attempt the sport, you’ll need to go to ground school.
Ground school is where you learn to jump, without leaving the ground. The course is taught by licensed skydiving instructors who have been jumping for years. They’ll teach you how to keep your body position stable. You’ll also learn to be constantly aware of your altitude and, most importantly, when to open your parachute.
Once you’re through with ground school, it’s time to get up in the air. However, a new jumper never jumps alone. two instructors always jump with the person, ready to pull the student’s parachute open if he— or she — freezes up.
No doubt, you’re thinking skydiving is a dangerous sport. It certainly seems dangerous when you’re watching someone fall at 200km/rh. But, if you believe the statistics, skydiving is actually safer than driving, with one fatality(死亡)occurring in approximately 60,000 jumps. Moreover, most enthusiasts agree all fear stops the second your feet leave the plane, and when you land, the only thought in your mind is,” Wow! I want to do that again!”

I’m looking forward to all the things I have to do at the conference, too. I’m giving a paper on Tuesday and there are a couple of really exciting events planned later in the conference program. I hope to meet up old teacher of mine at the conference. She taught English literature at my old high school and we’ve kept in touch through letters over the years. Would you do me a favor please? I had an appointment with my doctor for a checkup on Thursday, but I don’t think I can go back then. Could you please call him on and cancel the appointment for me? Thanks a lot, John. One last thing, when you leave the house, makes sure the windows and doors are shut, and set the burglar alarm. T he alarm code number is 9-1-2-0 enter. Have fun! I’ll see you when I get back. This is your friend Martha saying, goodbye.

Good appearance often makes a big difference in social communication, competition, finding jobs and so on .Not only can it help you become more confident, but also it helps you be impressed. Physical beauty is likely to draw much attention.
Other students have different opinions. They hold the idea that good appearance will buy no beef . Spiritual beauty is more important. A beautiful person is not the one with a good looking , but the one with a broad and kind heart.
Actually ,as is known to all ,the standard of beauty changes with different societies, cultures and nations Even if you don’t have a nice face, you still can be attractive if you are a person with a kind heart and broad intelligence
