This is rather strange story but it is quite true . In December 1996, a burglar broke into a golf club in a small town . When the police arrived to investigate ,they found an unusual clue (线索)—a piece of cheese with a bite-mark in it . The burglar had gone into the kitchen , and had eaten some food there . Then he had stolen some cigarettes and a little money .

The policeman charge of the case guessed that the burglar was a local man . He thought that professional thieves would not bother to break into a golf club . They would know there was not much worth stealing in such a place . He made enquiries in the town and asked three suspects to come to the police station . When he questioned them about the burglary , they all denied stealing in the club. The policeman then gave each man a piece of cheese and asked him to bite it . He took the pieces of the cheese to dentist and asked him to compare the bite-marks with that in the piece of cheese found at the golf club . Then the dentist said the bite-mark made by one of the suspects was the same as that in the piece of cheese at the scene of the burglary .

The policeman set free two of the suspects and questioned the third one . At first the man claimed that he was innocent . Girly pretty , with long dark hair, 18-year-old Katie Leung from Scotland is sure to arouse much excitement among Hary Potter fans this month .

The fourth film adaptation (改编) of the wildly popular J.K .

Rowling books , “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”, (《哈利•波特与火焰杯》)is released on November 18. Katie is about to burst onto the big screen as the girl Cho Chang who wins Harry Potter’s heart .

Katie’s scenes in the film are set around the Hogwarts Yule Ball(圣诞舞会). Harry plucks up courage to ask Cho to the dance .But Cho has a boyfriend and she must turn Harry down.

“I think she’s a really loyal person,” Katie says of her character. “The scenes where Harry is gazing at Cho from afar are fun Cho sees Harry looking and gives him a look back . He then thinks he’s got a chance , but he hasn’t .”

The story of Katie becoming Cho also has fairytale qualities . She went to the initial audition (初试)in London after her dad saw an advertisement on a Chinese TV channel . The actress had to be 16, which Katie was at the time , and of Eastern appearance . When the director asked: “Who’s from Scotland?” Katie was the only one who put her hand up . Although Katie had no previous acting experience , not even in a school play, she beat 5,000 hopefuls and won the role .

“I felt pretty confident but that was only because I was treating the auditions as a bit of fun . I’m not the kind of girl who’s always dreamed of being an actress ,” Katie said .

“I’m the shy type , really. At school I could go without talking to anyone for days and days . I was so shy that it was unbelievable and it never occurred to me that I could get into this business.”

Katie isn’t calling herself an actress just yet , although she won praise from Daniel Radcliffe (who plays Harry) for her performance , who described her as a “natural” .

Cho and Harry’s relationship develops in later books , but Katie doesn’t know if she’ll be in the next film .

“I’d like to do more acting , but if ‘Gablet of Fire’ turns out to he my only film then I think it would be pretty cool to be known as Harry Potter’s first crush,” she said .

NEW YORK (Reuters Health )—Seeing may be believing , but hearing a sound first may help your sense of sight , according to results of a new study.

Researchers at the University of California at San Diego report that people were more accurate at noticing a flash of light when a sound was produced at the same location (地点) immediately before the light flashed .

We used aloud sound to catch our participants’ attention , one of the study’s authors , Dr McDonald , said in an article . During some experiments , the sound occurred at the same location as the flash of light , while at other times it was produced on the opposite side of participants’ field of sight . The 33 participants in the study were more accurate at noticing the flash of light when the sound occurred on the same side , suggesting that sound can help direct visual attention.

According to McDonald, his research team plans to continue studying the relationship between sight and sound . It will be interesting to see, he said , what happens to the ability to pay attention when one of the senses does not work as well as it should , as in a person who is blind or has hearing problems .

McDonald also noted that research into the relationship between sight and sound could affect the way we look at people with attention disorder . Traditionally , these people together are considered to have attention problems , but in some people the problem may be caused by hearing or sight deficits (缺陷).

“It could be possible that they could have a deficit in one sense or another , or in relating sight and sound together ,” McDonald said . Research into this area may lead to better treatment for people who have a hard time paying attention . It may be a good idea to take into consideration the relationship between sound and sight when designing warning signals , such as for an airplane pilot . “A sound would act to draw your attention to the correct spot in the instrument panel,” he said .

64.By saying “Seeing may be believing” at the beginning of the text , the writer is suggesting that

       .

A.the saying has some influence on their research

B.there is a relationship between hearing and seeing

C.you should read the research findings in this article

D.you should visit the laboratory in person

65.One question the research team wants to study is      .

A.what can be done to deal with hearing problems

B.what can be done to improve pilots attention during flight

C.how people with hearing or sight deficits can improve their attention

D.how hearing or sight deficits may affect people’s ability to pay attention

66.McDonald believes that the study of the relationship between sight and sound      .

A.will help change the well-being of medical doctors

B.will have practical values for medical doctors and airplane pilots

C.will prevent people from having hearing or sight problems

D.will help to improve people’s eyesight

67.What is the main topic discussed in the text ?

A.Research led by McDonald provides a cure for people with hearing problems .

B.The University of California takes the lead in the study of attention

C.Sound improves people’s ability to pay attention .

D.Sound helps people to notice the flash of light .

As a youngster , there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather’s farm in western Pennsylvania . Surrounded by miles of winding stone walls , the house and field provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me . I was used to tidy living rooms that seemed to whisper , “Not to be touched!”

I can still remember one afternoon when I was eight years old . Since my first visit to the farm , I had wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stone walls surrounding the houses . My parents would never approve. The walls were old ; some stones were missing , others loose and falling . Still , my idea to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally , one spring afternoon , I had all my courage to enter the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner .

“I , uh—I wanna climb the stone walls ,” I said . Everyone looked up . “Can I climb the stone walls ?” Immediately voices of disagreement went up from the women in the room . “Heavens , no! You’ll hurt yourself !” I wasn’t too disappointed , the response was just as I’d expected . But before I could leave the room , I was stopped by my grandfather’s loud voice. “Now hold on just a minute,” I heard him say . “Let the boy climb the stone walls . He has to learn to do things for himself.”

“Go,” he said to me , “and come and see me when you get back .” For the next two and a half hours I climbed those old walls—and had the time of my life . Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventures . I’ll never forget what he said. “Fred,” he said , smiling , “You made this day a special day just by being yourself . Always remember , there’s only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are.”

Many years have passed since then , and today I host the television program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood , seen by millions of children throughout America . There have been changes over the years , but one thing remains the same : my message to children at the end of almost every visit . “There’s only one person in this whole world like you,” the kids can count on hearing me say, “and people can like you exactly as you are .”

    A.prove B.suppose C.allow D.mind

71.We can learn from the passage that the writer was .

Prices determine hot resources which are to be used . They are also the means by which products and services that are in limited supply are rationed among buyers . The price system of the United States is very complex network composed of the prices of all the products bought and sold in the economy as well as those of a myriad of services , including labor , professional transportation , and public utility services . The interrelation-ships of all these prices make up the system of prices . The price of any particular product or service is linked to a broad , complicated system of prices in which everything seems to depend more or less upon everything else .

If one want to ask a group of randomly selected individuals to define “price”, many would reply that price is an amount of money paid by buyer to the seller of a product or service , in other words , that price is the money value of a product or service as agreed upon in a market transaction . This definition is , of course , valid as far as it goes . For a complete understanding of a price in any particular transaction , much more than the amount of money involved must be known . Both the buyer and the seller should be familiar with not only the money amount , but with the amount and quality of the product or service to be exchanged , the time and place at which the exchanged will take place and payment will be made , the form of money to be used , the credit terms and discounts that supply to the transaction , guarantees on the product or service , delivery terms , return privileges , and other factors . In other words , both buyer and seller should be fully aware of all the factors that comprise the total “package” being exchanged for the asked-for amount of money in order that they may evaluate a given price .

72.What is the best title for the passage ?

A.The Inherent Weaknesses of the Price System

B.The Complexities of the Price System

    C.Credit Terms in Transaction

D.Resource Allocation and the Public Sector

73.According to the passage , the price system is related primarily to      .

A.labor and education B.transportation and insurance

C.utilities and repairs D.products and services

74.According to the passage , which of the following is NOT a factor in the complete under-standing of price ?

A.Instructions that come with a product B.The quantity of a product

C.The quality of product D.Warranties that over a product

75.The paragraph following the passage most likely discusses .

    A.unusual ways to advertise products

B.types of payment plans for service

C.theories about how products affect different levels of society

D.how certain elements of price “package” influence market

Of all the subjects I’m learning at school , I like English best . I have been learning English for 6 years and now I am able to listen , speak , read and write in English . I hope to take this chance to improve my spoken English as much as possible . Besides , I’d like to have home-stay for a couple of days so that I can know better about English habits and customs . I believe I will have a wonderful time in England this summer .

Yours ,

Wang Hong
