The purpose of a letter of application is to help you to “sell” yourself . It should state 21 the job you want , and should tell what your abilities are and what you have 22 . It should be simple , human , personal and brief without 23 out any necessary fact .
In writing a letter of application , keep in 24 that the things a possible employer is most 25 to want to know about are your qualifications (条件), your achievements and your aims . The opening paragraph is perhaps the most important part . 26 the first few sentences fail to 27 the reader’s attention, the rest of the letter may not be 28 at all . Try to key your opening remarks to the needs or interests of the employer not 29 your own need or desires . For example , instead of beginning with “ I saw your 30 in today’s paper” you might say “ I have made a careful 31 of your advertising during the past six months” or “I have made a survey in my neighborhood to find out how many housewives 32 your product and why they like it”.
Try to 33 generalities . Be clear about the kind of job for which you are now 34 .College graduates looking for their first positions often ask : “What can I 35 in a letter ? Employers want experience , which , naturally, no 36 has.” The answer is that everything you have ever done is 37 .
It is important to write a good strong closing for your letter. 38 a specific request for an interview or give the possible employer something definite to do or expect . An excellent 39 is to enclose (内附) a stamped , self-addressed envelope with your letter . That makes it 40 for a possible employer to get in touch with you .
21.A.clearly B.carefully C.obviously D.easily
22.A.found B.done C.known D.heard
23.A.sending B.taking C.leaving D.picking
24.A.brain B.sight C.order D.mind

26.A.While B.Although C.As D.If
27.A.pay B.win C.show D.fix
28.A.kept B.continued C.written D.read
29.A.to B.for C.into D.from
30.A.advertisement B.report C.article D.introduction
31.A.watch B.search C.study D.discussion
32.A.change B.make C.sell D.use

Most people feel lonely sometimes , but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours .This kind of loneliness is not serious . In fact , it is quite normal . For some people , though , loneliness can last for years . Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness .
The first kind of loneliness is temporary (暂时的). This is the most common type . It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention .The second kind , situational loneliness , is a natural result of a particular situation——for example , a family problem , the death of a loved one , or moving to a new place . Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems , such as headaches and sleeplessness , it usually does not last for more than a year . The third kind of loneliness is the most severe . Unlike the second type , chronic (长期的) loneliness usually lasts more two years and has no specific cause . People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others . Unfortunately , many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition .
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons : they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease . While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal , healthy part of life , chronic loneliness can be a very sad , and sometimes dangerous condition .

B.we depend on various people for different reasons

44.Why do psychologists want to help chronically lonely people ?
A.Chronic loneliness can cause family problems .
B.Chronic loneliness can cause serious illness .
C.Chronic loneliness can not be overcome .
D.Such people are harmful to society .
45.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Three kinds of loneliness B.Loneliness and Diseases
C.Loneliness and Social Contacts D.Chronic Loneliness

The English , such as a race , are very different from all other nationalities , including their closest neighbors , the French , Belgians and Dutch .It is claimed that living on an island separated from the rest of Europe has much to do with it . Whatever the reasons are , it may be fairly stated that the Englishman has developed many attitudes and habits which distinguish him from other nationalities .
Broadly speaking , the Englishman is a quiet , shy , reserved person who is fully relaxed only among peole he knows well . In the presence of strangers of foreigners he often seems embarrassed . You have only to see a city train any morning or evening to see the truth of this . Serious-looking businessmen and women sit reading their newspapers or having a light sleep in a corner , no one speaks . In fact , to do so would seem most unusual . An Englishman , pretending to be giving advice to overseas visitors , once suggested , “on entering a railway carriage shake hands with all the passengers”. Needless to say , he was not being serious . There is an unwritten but clearly understood code of behavior which , if broken , makes the person immediately suspect .
In many parts of the world it is quite normal to show openly extremes of enthusiasm , emotion , excitement , etc . The Englishman is somewhat different . Of course , an Englishman feels on less deeply than any other nationality , but he tends to display his feelings far less . This is reflected in his use of language . Imagine a man commenting on the great beauty of a young girl . Whereas a more emotional man might describe her as “an excellent jewel”, “extremely beautiful”, “precious”, the Englishman will flatly state “Um, she is all right .”
46.From the passage people can infer that the English are different from other nationalities mainly in .
A.manners B.character
C.the principle of behavior D.all aspects
47.If one doesn’t want to be suspected in public , he had better .
A.behave relaxed B.shake hands with all the people he meets
C.talk with others D.keep quiet
48.According to the passage , the Englishman .
A.has less feelings than other nationalities
B.has emotions as deep as any other nationality
C.expresses emotion by use of his language
D.likes to have a joke with foreign visitors
49.An Englishman’s saying “all right” usually has the sense of .
A.not bad B.quite right C.fairly good D.good

To Lauder Exchange Program :
Gaia Filicori was a student in my Humanities class for the 2002-2003 year . From the first week of classes it was obvious that Gaia was an excellent student and a very sociable young lady . She was always eager to join in class discussion . Gaia’s ability to communicate her own ideas is a skill that many of us work for a very long time to achieve .
Gaia also has a deep curiosity about the world around her . The simple fact that she desires to spend a year in another country is proof enough . I have also seen her show this curiosity in class . She asked some of the most interesting and thoughtful questions of any of the students in her class . When others were content to accept a point , Gaia would see from a new angle (角度)that none of us had tried .
As a student in Humanities , Gaia was required to complete a group project . The project was to write a page for a Humanities textbook using text and multi-midia . It was a chanllenging task and Gaia’s group was experiencing some difficulties . Yet , they had an easier time of it because they did not hesitate to come to me with their problems and try to work them out . As a result Gaia and her group had one of the more successful projects . The ability needed to recognize a problem and ask for help to solve it will be of great value if she is selected to be a Lauder Exchange student.
Gaia’s interest in the world around her will serve her well as a Lauder Exchange student . The ease with which she get along with others and the ease with which she makes new friends will also help her as she tries to learn in a foreign setting . I have no doubt that Gaia would be a wonderful representative of the Lauder Program , Stuyvesant High School , and the United States .

When people express a need for something——even if that need is imagined rather than real—someone will probably make it to meet that need .For example , from time to time predictions(预报) of a great earthquake upset the people of Tokyo , Japan . E
Personal Growth
There are two basic ways to see growth : one as a product , the other as a process .
People have generally viewed personal growth as an external (外面的) result or product that can easily be identified and measured . The worker who gets a promotion , the student whose grades improve , the foreigner who learns a new language——all these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts .
By contrast , the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine , since by definition it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way . The process is not the road itself , but rather the attitudes and feelings people have , their caution or courage , as they gain new experiences and face unexpected difficulties . In this process ,the journey never really ends ; there are always new ways to experience the world , new ideas to try , new challenge to accept .
In order to grow , to travel new roads , people need to have a willingness to take risks , to confront (敢于面对) the unknown , and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first . How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is essential to our ability to grow . Do we see ourselves as quick and curious ? If so , then we tend to take more chances and to be more open to unfamiliar experiences . Do we think we’re shy and indecisive (优柔寡断)?Then we may hesitate , move slowly , and not take a step until we know the ground is safe . Do we think we’re slow to adapt to change or that we’re not smart enough to cope with a new challenge ? The we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all .
These feelings of insecurity (缺乏安全)and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary for us to change and grow . If we do not confront and overcome these internal fears and doubts , if we protect ourselves too much , then we sease to grow . We become trapped inside a shell of our own making .
57.A person is generally believed to achieve personal growth when .
A.he has given up his smoking habit
B.he has made great efforts in his work
C.he is keen on learning anything new
D.he has tried to determine where he is on his journey
58.In the author’s eyes , one who views personal growth as a person would .
A.succeed in climbing up the social ladder
B.judge his ability to grow from his own achievements
C.face difficulties and take up challenges
D.aim high and reach his goal each time
59.When the author says “a new way of being , he is referring to .
A.a new approach to experiencing the world
B.a new way of taking risks
C.a new method of perceiving (觉察、理解) ourselves
D.a new system of adapting to change
60.For personal growth , the author supports all of the following except .
A.curiosity about more chances B.promptness (迅速)is self-adaptation
C.open-mindedness to new experiences D.avoidance of internal fears and doubts
