Aboriginal is a term used to describe the people and animals that lived in a place from the earliest known times or before Europeans arrived . Examples are the Maori in New Zealand , the Aborigines in Australia and the Indians in America . They all share the fact that they were pushed off their land by European settlers .

Maori

The Maori were the first people to go to New Zealand , about 1,000 years ago . They came from the islands of Polynesia in the Pacific . They brought dogs , rats and plants with them and settled mainly on the Northern Island . In 1769 , Captain James Cook from Britain took possession of the island and from that time British people started to settle . The Maori signed an agreement on land rights with these settlers , but in later years there were arguments and battles between them .

Aborigines

The native people of Australia came from somewhere in Asia more than 50,000 years ago . They lived by hunting and gathering . Their contact with British settlers began in 1788 . By the 1940s almost all of them were mixed into Australian society as low-paid workers . Their rights were limited . In 1976 and 1993 the Australian Government passed laws that returned some land to the Aborigines and recognized their property rights .

American Indians

Long before the Europeans came to America in the 16th and 17th century , the American Indians , or Native Americans , lived there . It is believed that they came from Asia . Christopher Columbus mistook the land for India and so called the people there Indians . The white settlers and American Indians lived in peace at the beginning , but conflicts finally arose and led to the Indian Wars(1866—1890). At the mouth of the Pearl River in Guangdong Province , 300 square kilometres of water have turned red recently .

The strange event is known as the “ red tide(赤潮)” and has been around for more than a week . The red tide is caused by the rapid growth of a certain type of algae(藻类). Algae are tiny , single-celled(单细胞的)plants that live in the sea . They serve as the energy producers at the base of the food cycle . When this particular type of algae reproduce in large numbers , they turn the ocean red .

Red tide algae produce poison and are dangerous to wildlife in the sea . They may even kill fish that feed on them by affecting their nervous systems so they can’t breathe . Dead fish are often washed up on beaches as a direct result of this red tide . And the danger could also extend to humans who eat the fish . What’s more , the algae also produce a terrible smell that makes it seem as if someone is holding your throat .

For local fishermen , the red tide is a tragedy . The poison kills large numbers of fish every time the algae bloom . Some of those fish are highly-prized . They are bred(繁殖)by the fishermen and cost them a small fortune .

No one really knows what causes red tides . Some experts believe it’s high temperatures combined with a lack of wind and rain . But they appear all over the world . The East China Sea is frequently attacked by this killer algae . And it hangs around for a long time . In 1986 , one red tide in the US lasted for 16 months !

The only way to fight it is with large amounts of rain and strong offshore(向海面吹的)winds that can break up the algae . Unfortunately , humans can control neither of these forces .

“ We can only forecast the movements of existing red tides based on weather reports , wind and wave directions , ” said Li Liang , a Chinese scientist .

“Still , being on guard can avoid some losses . For instance , fishermen can avoid using water already infected that has not yet turned red . ” he added .

31. After reading the passage , we can conclude that     .

A. red tide has no effect on people’s health

C. China owns the most advanced technology to forecast the movement of red tides so that they can carry out further study

D. scientists are helping the local fishers to reduce their losses when a red tide happens
