Beginning next month, 14 excellent historic sites in the Hongkou District will bear "anti-theft name boards" on their outside walls, district officials announced yesterday.

The move was launched to better protect historic sites because several bronze signs outside the former residences of famous writers - Guo Moruo, Ye Shengtao and Ding Ling - on Duolun Road, were recently stolen.

"We had no better way of preventing the name boards from being taken again," Ge Jianping, an official of the Cultural Relics Management Commission of Hongkou District, said yesterday.

He said the signs were very probably stolen by garbage collectors for their bronze which can be sold to the city's waste recycling stations.

"The old boards were just coated with bronze and their content was a special steel that doesn't have recycling value," he said.

The new gray-and-white signs, which is made of titanium, will be "tightly" fastened to the wall through a special material.

"No one can easily take the new board away unless they break the wall," said Ge, noting that titanium doesn't have recycling value.

The 14 excellent historic sites which will receive new signs will include the former Ohel Moishe Synagogue on Changyang Road.

The Chinese people’s love affair with jade (翡翠) is a long and unbroken one. For five thousand years, Chinese have enjoyed wearing, collecting and appreciating jade. And Chinese craftsmen (工艺匠人) have created a great number and variety of fine works in jade. Starting from Tuesday, an exhibition entitled “Romance with Jade” opens at Beijing’s Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City. And for many of the valuable stones, it’s a genuine (地道的) homecoming.

If these pieces of jade had feelings, they’d probably be sighing over the unusual cycle of life. After several hundred years of changing hands, including being shipped overseas, the art works have finally come home. For many of the pieces, their return is especially meaningful, since the Forbidden City was where they were originally housed. And this wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of one man.

Hong Kong billionaire and jade connoisseur (鉴赏家) Tsu-Kwok Ho put together a collection featuring 130 pieces of fine-quality jade. While living abroad in the 1990’s, the outstanding Hong Kong businessman became aware of the dispersal (散落) of Chinese cultural relics (遗产) overseas. From then on, he tried every way to collect works of Chinese jade, going as far as very small and remote European cities, where some of the finest Chinese jade was to be found.

And the art lover believes the Forbidden City is the place for the collection’s first public exhibition outside Hong Kong.

With a worth believed to be in nine-figures in Hong Kong dollars, the 130 pieces date from the Ming and Qing dynasties (朝代), with many rare pieces from the imperial (帝国的) collection of the Qing Court. They’re of superb quality and craftsmanship, showing the high level of sophistication (复杂) of jade production during these last two imperial dynasties.

The “Romance of Jade” exhibition will remain in the Forbidden City till mid-December.

There are new findings that not enough sleep may cause people to gain weight. Researchers say a lack of sleep can produce hormonal (激素的) changes that increase feelings of hunger.

In one study, researchers in the United States examined information on more than 1000 people. The people had taken part in a long-term study of sleep disorders.

Some people slept less than five hours a night. They had 15 percent higher blood levels of a hormone called ghrelin than people who slept eight hours. And they had 15 percent less of the hormone leptin. Experts say ghrelin helps make people feel hungry; leptin makes you feel full.

The scientists say these hormonal changes may be a cause of obesity (肥胖症) in Western societies. They note the combination that  (72)  limitation is common and  (72)  is widely available (可得到的).

The results were not affected by how much people exercised. People who are awake longer have more time to burn energy. But the researchers say loss of sleep may increase hunger especially for high-calorie foods, so people gain weight. It seems that, for survival, the body may be designed to store more fat during times with less sleep.

Researchers from Stanford University in California and the University of Wisconsin did the study. They found that the best amount of sleep for weight control is 7.7 hours a night.

The Public Library of Science published the findings in its journal Medicine. Internet users can read the full study, free of charge, at plos.org.

71. Which of the following shows the right way in which lack of sleep causes weight gain?

        D. more leptin and less ghrelin→feeling full→less exercise

    B. Those who don’t sleep at all are the most likely to put on weight.

    C. Sleeping contributes more to obesity than eating.

    D. It’s not wise to use sleep hours for exercise.

74. When you sleep 7.7 hours a night, you will _____.

Dear manager,

I hope to apply for a job in your company during this summer vacation. Please allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Wang Hong, female. I was born in Weihai, Shandong province, on August, 6th, 1986. I’ve just graduated from Weihai No. 1 Middle School. Since it will be over two months before I go to university, I want to find a part-time job during this period, and I hope to be a travel guide in your company. I once worked as a tourist guide for a month and was highly praised for my good service. (I enjoy working with people together. I am young, strong, delightful and helpful. I can speak common spoken Chinese / Putonghua and English pretty well. I am very interested in traveling and especially know many beautiful places in Weihai quite well, for it is the place where I am growing up. I’m sure I am qualified for the job.)

If it is likely for you to hire me, please call me at 858- or write to me at this address: 72 Qingdao Road, Weihai, Shandong Province and the post code is 264200.

Looking forward to your reply.

Text 1

M: How about my food? I’ve been sitting here for almost half an hour.

W: I’m sorry, sir. It must be ready by now.

Text 2

M: Is Tom angry?

W: I don’t think so. If he were, he’d tell us.

Text 3

W: I’d like to buy these two chairs. How much are they?

M: They are 45 dollars each or 80 dollars for the pair.

Text 4

M: What are you going to do this afternoon?

W: I’m going to walk into town to the drug store for some medicine.

Text 5

M: I really wish John would take some interest in our business. I don’t know why he wants to become a writer.

W: But he’s only sixteen. I think he should do what he wants.

Text 6

W: Well, I thought you said we were going to stay three days in Miami.

M: We are. It’s two nights in the hotel, June 3rd and 4th , but three days altogether.

W: I see. We arrive early on the third, and we leave at 11:30p.m. on the fifth.

M: That’s correct. As you see, I’ve got tickets for you on the night train to Chicago on the fifth, Mrs. White.

W: So it really is a full day on the fifth.

M: Plenty of time for shopping. You’ll even have enough time for a show in the evening because the train station is near the theatre district.

W: What about hotels in Chicago?

M: Although it’s the tourist season, I was able to get you a good room.

W: That’ll be great. We’ll have a good time there right in the heart of Chicago.

M: Now, after you stay in Chicago, I’ve planned your visit to Salt Lake City as you requested. You’ll have two days there before you fly to Orlando.

Text 7

M: Hi, Laura, have you made any New Year’s resolutions?

W: Just the usual. I’d like to lose some weight, and I want to save some money.

M: Come on! Everybody makes those resolutions!

W: I know, Tiger. Well, I hope I’ll get a good job after I graduate this summer, but that’s not a resolution. I’m going to work harder. How about you?

M: I stopped smoking last July. That was last year’s promise to myself.

W: So what do you want to do this year?

M: I want to start getting more exercise. I have to lose weight, so I’d like to join a health club..

W: Me, too. Jerry told me he’d like to treat himself a really nice vacation.

M: Oh? Where did he think he would go?

W: He might go to a quiet beach in New Zealand, or go fishing in Australia. He hasn’t made up his mind yet.

Text 8

W: I’m sure I’m forgetting something, but I don’t know what it is.

M: Do you have your passport?

W: Yes, I have it right here. And I have the tickets. What else would it be?

M: You have all your suitcases, don’t you?

W: I believe so. Let’s see. One… two… three… four… five. Yes, they’re all here.

M: Well, it seems to me you have everything you’ll need.

W: No, I don’t. Something is missing, but ai can’t think what it could be.

M: Don’t worry about it now. The plane is about to take off. By the way, where is Mr, Joe?

W: Mr. Joe? Oh! Now I know what it is! I forgot my husband.

Text 9

W: Hi, Tom. What was the film like?

M: Terrible. It was a complete waste of time. It was about a married couple. They had to live with the wife’s mother because they didn’t have enough money to buy a house of their own.

W: A lot of young people have to do that.

M: Yes, but the husband had to work overtime three times a week, so he was always tired.

W: It sounds miserable.

M: Not really. His wife was able to find a good job as a manager in a company. So, in the end, they were able to buy a house, and he didn’t have to work any more. Stupid, wasn’t it?

W: I don’t know. Anyway, I don’t want to see that film. I’m so busy with my exams.

Text 10

John lived with his mother in a rather big house, and when she died, the house became too big for him, so he bought a smaller one in the next street. There was a very nice old clock in his first house, and when the men came to take his furniture to the new house, John thought, “I am not going to let them carry my beautiful old clock in their truck. Perhaps they’ll break it and then repairing it will be very expensive.” So he himself picked it up and began to carry it down the road in his arms.

It was heavy, so he stopped two or three times to have a rest.

Suddenly a small boy came along the road. He stopped and looked at John for a few seconds. Then he said to John, “You are a foolish man, aren’t you? Why don’t you buy a watch like everybody else’s?”
