第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A

The idea of fighting a noise by making more noise sounds strange, but that’s exactly what motor engineers are doing in Germany and some other countries.

Carmakers’ research and development laboratories have already proved that mixing in more noise with the help of loudspeakers (喇叭)can reduce the unwanted noise.

Physicists have known about the technique for a long time. Sound is made up of pressure waves in the air. If two sound waves of the same frequency(频率)mix so that the highest point of one wave happens at the same time with the lowest point of the other wave, the result is no sound. Therefore, by producing a perfect copy of the noise and delaying(推迟) it by half a wave cycle(周期), we can kill the unwanted noise. Using this technique, many carmakers are racing to develop noise-killing systems both inside and out side the cars.

Another good thing about the use of noise-killing systems is that is saves the need for a silencer, which not only reduces the weight of a car, but also makes the motor burn less oil and work better.

Some engineers believe that the noise-killing system will be used in most cars in the future. But the carmakers haven’t decided if they will put it into production because it would add several hundred to the cost of their cars.

56.Which of the following gives a general idea of how the noise-killing system works?

A. By producing pressure waves going in the opposite direction.

B. By mixing high frequency sound waves with low frequency sound wave.

C. By making copies of the unwanted sound waves and letting them out a little later.

D. By mixing new sound waves with the noise and sending them out together.

57.Besides its main function(功能) the noise-killing system can______.

A. make a car lighter B. make a car quieter

C. reduce the cost of a silencer D. improve the performance of a silencer

58. The noise-killing system is not yet popular mainly because______

A. it increases the cost of car production B. carmakers are not sure if it is necessary

C. it is still being tried out        D. people still have their doubts

B.

Britons Learn to Forgive

LEEDS, ENGLAND—A Leeds University psychology(心理学) professor is teaching a course to help dozens of Britons forgive their enemies.

“The hatred(憎恨) we hold within us is a cancer,” Professor Ken Hart said, and he added that holding in anger can lead to problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

More than 70 people have become members in Hart’s first 20-week workshop(实验班) in London a course he says is the first of its kind in the world.

“These are people who are sick and tired of living with the memory. They realize their bitterness(痛苦) is a poison they think they can pour out, but they end up drinking it themselves.” said Canadian-born Hart.

The students meet in groups of eight to ten for the two- hour workshop with a visit to an adviser every fortnight.

The course, ending in July, is expected to get rid of the cancer of hate in these people.

“People have lots of negative(消极的) attitudes towards forgiveness (原谅),” he said. “ People confuse(把……混同)forgiveness with for getting.”

Forgiveness is something of changing from a negative attitude to a positive one.

Hart and his team have created instructions(说明) to provide the training (训练)needed.

“The main idea is to give you guidelines(准则) on how to look at various angers which affect you, and how to change your attitude toward the person you are angry with,” said Norman Glaring bull, a senior expert on the forgiveness project. Hart said he believes forgiveness is a skill that can be taught, as these people “want to get free of the past”.

Many people go to school for an education. They learn Languages, history, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything from school. A teacher, no matter how much he knows, can not teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.

It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to memorize(记住)some facts or a formula(公式)。It is usually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a mats problem. Great scientists, such as Einstein, Newton and Galileo didn’t get every-thing from school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind(人类).

Above all, they knew how to use their brains.

64.Whether he is more ____________or less, a teacher can’t teach his students everything they want to know.

A. important B. useful C. difficulty D. knowledgeable(有知识的)。

65. A teacher’s job is mainly to train his students to master the ability of __________.

A. learning by themselves B. making a living

C. reading and thinking D. studying all the subjects

66.The reason for scientists’ success is that _______.

A. they read books that were not taught at school.

B. they worked all their lives

C. they wasted not a single moment

D. they knew how to use their brains

D

Make it with your own hands

Yang Yu works for a German company in Beijing. Though he enjoys the computer business, it is hard for him to relax after work.

“For a long time, I had no choice except to go to a bar for a drink.” He said.

Yang started looking for something a little less destructive(破坏性) and a little more constructive (建设性).

  He found it .

Yang builds model tanks. His tanks don’t look as professionally (专业地)made as those displayed in stores, but he likes doing it.

“Playing with store bought tanks with expensive price tags is not as much fun,” he said.

“When I was younger, I liked wearing blue army uniforms and holding a wooden gun to shoot at imaginary enemy tanks. Now I enjoy putting together tanks----inexpensively.”

His bookshelves now hold not books but plastic(塑料的) tank models that Yang made.

A growing number of young people are like Yang, creating (making) things on their own. They like to do it themselves.

Though many “ ready-made” craft items (手工艺品) are valuable in China, some people, increasingly(增加地) known as DIYers-do-it-yourselfers-appreciate the sense of involvement in the process of making personalized products eco-nominally.

DIY, as lifestyle(生活方式), is beginning to catch on.

Besides making tanks, many create things from their own kitchen dishes to assembling (fit together) personal computers.

However new the DIY fad (新奇的时尚) may be to the younger generation, many people remember when DIY was a way of life.

During the 1960s and 1970 when materials(材料) were in short supply, people were forced to use their own hands to do many things. Whitewashing the wall or sewing clothes was a part of life.

There was no choice(选择): if you wanted something done, you did it yourself; if you needed a piece of equipment(设备), you made it yourself. And if it took longer, that was also a point of pride, You were self- sufficient.

But times have changed and the concept of DIY is different.

Now it’s more a form of self-expression, as well as a way to economize.

67. What does Yang Yu most enjoy doing in his spare time?

A. Computer business.

B. Going to bar for a drink.

C. Doing something by himself.

D. Wearing blue army uniforms and holding a wooden gun to shoot at imaginary enemy tanks.

68.What are put on Yang Yu’s bookshelf?

A. Books       B. Plastic C. Tanks made by himself D. Enemy tanks

69. Why does Yang Yu build tanks?

A. They are valuable B. He wants to save money

C. His family needs them D. For fun

70. What is the writer’s attitude in this passage?

A. His tanks don’t look as professionally as those in stores.

B. Store-bought tanks are too expensive

C. DIY was a way of life in the past.

D. DIY is a good way of life.
