第二部分:阅读理解(共25小题,第一节每小题2分,第二节每小题2分,满分50分)

第一:阅读下列短文,选出最佳答案

A

In 1947 the pilot of a small aeroplane saw nine strange objects in the sky over Washington,USA. He said that looked like saucers .Newspapers printed his story under the headline“Flying Sausers”.

Since then, all over the world, people have reported similar strange fiying objects. No one knows what they are or where they come from. Some people say that do not exist, but many others say that they have seen them. Usually people on the ground have seen them but not always. Airline pilots also have reported seeing them and so have astronauts—the men who fly in spaceships.

Perhaps some people saw then only in their imagination or illusion(幻觉,错觉)。Perhaps some people made a mistake. But airline pilots and astronauts do not usually make mistakes of this kind. Captain Ed Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, said in 1974 that he believes that some“flying saucers”are real. Many other people now believe that these strange flying objects are visiting the earth from other worlds in space.

“They have come to greet us.”They say.

The American government tried to find out more about these objects. It listened to great many people who said they had seen them. But the Government Committee could not decide on what the objects were. It called them UFOs, which is short for Unidentified Flying Objects.

Some even say they have seen people in the flying saucers! In 1964,a driver of police car in New Mexico saw a UFO landing a mile away. When he reached it, there were two small figures standing near it. They looked like little men. When he reported on his radio, they got inside the object and flew away.

In 1973 two men were out fishing in Mississippi River. They say they saw a UFO shaped like an egg. There were three creatures like men but their skins were silver in color. They had no eyes, and their mouths were just slits(裂缝),Their noses and ears were pointed. They made the fishermen get inside the UFO for a while. Then the creatures photographed them and took them to the place where they had been fishing.

There are many other similar stories. Some are probably untrue but some may be true.No one knows.

PUBLIC SPIRIT

Each nation has its own peculiar(特有) character which distinguishes it from others. But the peoples of the world have more points in which they are all like each other than points in which they are different. One type of person that is common in every country is the one who always tries to do as little as he can and to get as much in return as he can. His opposite, the man who is in the habit of doing more than what is strictly necessary and who is ready to accept what is offered in return , is rare everywhere.

Both these types are usually unconscious of their character. The man who avoids effort is always about his“rights”:he appears to think that society owes him a pleasant, easy life. The man who is always doing more than his share talks of “duties”:he feels that the individual is in debt to society, and not society to the individual. As a result of their views, neither of these men thinks that he behaves at all strangely.

The men who tries to do as little as he can is always full of excuses: if he was neglected to do something, is was because he had a headache, or the weather was too hot or too cold or because he was prevented by bad luck.. At first, other people, such as his friends and his employer, generously accept his stories; but soon they realize what kink of person he is, In the long run he deceives only himself. When his friends become cool towards his and he fails to make progress in his job, he is surprised and hurt. He blames everyone and everything except himself. He feels that society is failing in its duties towards him, and that he is being unjustly treated. He soon becomes one of the discontented(令人不满)members of the society he lives in.

His public spirited opposite is never too busy to take on an extra piece of work; that is the strongest thing about the whole business. If you want something done in a hurry, don`t go to the man who has clearly not much to do. He will probably have a dozen excellent excuses for not being able to help you , much as he claims he would like to .Go to the busiest man you know, particularly if you are sure that he has not a spare minute in the week. If your work is really important, he will make time for if.

There are more than 100 million cars in the United States. An ordinary car gets less than 15 miles from eachgallon(加仑)of gas. It travels about 10,000 miles each year. In that time., it uses about 650 gallons of gas. In all, automobiles use up some 70 billion gallons of gas a year. That comes out to be four—and—a—half million barrels(桶)a day.

The importance of saving gas, then , cannot be stressed too much. Let`s say, the fuel used by each car could be cut back just 15 percent. This could be done by making fewer trips each day.It could be done by keeping the automobiles in good shape. It could be through better driving habits. If these were done, the nation`s use of fuel would fall by close to two —thirds of a million barrels per day.

Everyone can help to save gas. One way is to ride buses. Some could walk to work.Others could ride their bikes. Another way is to share a ride .People could share cars. About one—third of all cars are used for going to and from work. You can go shopping with a friend from time to time. If two people use a car instead of two they all save. Driving stress(紧张)would be less, too , with  fewer cars on the road. The savings on gas around the nation would come to more than one —half million barrels a day. Still another way to save is by cutting out trips one does not need to take. Can you find one car trip per week that could be done by telephone? Can you combine trips ? If each car traveled 10 miles less each week, they could save three—and —a—half billion gallons of gas a year. This comes to nearly 5 percent of the total passenger cars demand for gas.

The way people drive decides how much fuel they save. Careful drivers may get 20 percent more miles per gallon than ordinary drivers. They obey the55—mile—per—hour speed limit. If just one gallon of gas were saved each week for each car in the country, a total of five—and—a—half billion gallons could be saved a year.

53.Which of the following statements is true about an average car according to the passage?

A.An ordinary car runs a lot more than 10,000 miles with 650 gallons of gas.

B.An ordinary car can not run more than 15 miles with one gallon of gas.

C.An ordinary car with ten gallons of gas can run more than 150 miles.

D.An ordinary car can run 10,000 miles each year with 70 billion gallons of fuel.

54.The passage mentions all of the following facts except that_________.

A.keeping one`s car in good shape helps one save gas.

B.riding buses instead of driving is helpful to gas saving

C.sharing a ride or walking to work is another way to save gas

D. driving stress can be greatly relieved by using less gas

55.According to the passage, it is possible to save five percent of the total passenger cars demand for gas each year, if________.

A.people all share car—riding instead of owning their own cars.

B.all the cars cut off one trip of 10 miles each week

C.two people go shopping in a car from time to time

D.people use telephones instead of riding cars

56.Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of the text?

A.Drivers should change their driving habits and keep their cars in good shape.

B.The importance of saving fuel is seldom ignored.

C.Saving gas is important and could be done in several ways.

D.People should use fewer automobiles and make good use of telephones.

The word conservation has a thrifty(节俭)meaning. To conserve is to save and to protect, to leave what we ourselves enjoy in such good condition that others may also share the enjoyment. Our forefathers had no idea that human population would increase faster than the supplies of raw materials(原材料);most of them, even until very recently, had the foolish idea that the treasures were limitless and inexhaustible(用不完的).Most of the citizens of earlier generations knew little or nothing about the complicated and delicate(精致的)system that runs all through nature, and which means that, as in a living body. an unhealthy condition of one part will sooner or later be harmful to all the others.

Fifty years ago nature study was not part of the school work; scientific forestry was a new idea; wood was still cheap because it could be brought in any quantity from distant woodlands, soil destruction(破坏)and river floods were not national problems; nobody had yet studies long—term climatic cycles in relation to proper land use; even the work“conservation”had nothing of the meaning that it has for us today.

For the interests of ourselves and those who will come after us ,we must now set about repairing the mistakes of our fore—fathers. Conservation should , therefore, be made a part of everyone`s daily life, To know about the water table(水位)in the ground is just as important to us a knowledge of the basic arithmetic formulas( 算术公式).We need to know why all watersheds(水滨)need the protection of plant life and why the running current of streams and rivers must be made to yield(produce)their full benefit to the before they finally escape to the sea. We need be taught the duty of planting trees as well as of cutting them. We need to know the importance of big, nature tress, because living space for most of man`s fellow creatures on this planet is figured not only in square measure of surface but also in cubic volume(容积)above the earth . In brief, it should be our goal to restore as much of the original beauty of nature as we can.

57.According to the author the greatest mistake of our forefathers was that_________.

A.they had no idea about scientific forestry

B.they had little or no sense of environmental protection

C.they did not realize the importance of nature study

D.they had no idea of how to make good use of raw materials

58.It can be inferred from the passage that earlier generations didn`t realize_______.

A.the interdependence of water, soil ,and living things

B.the importance of the proper land use

C.the harmfulness of soil destruction and river floods.

D.the extraordinary rapid growth of population

59.With a view to correcting the mistakes of our forefathers, the author suggests that_____..

A.we plant more trees

B.we be taught environmental science as well as the science of plants

C. environmental education be directed toward everyone

D.we return to nature

60.What does the author imply by saying “living space…above the earth”?

A.Our living space on the earth is getting smaller and smaller

B.Our living space should be measured in cubic volume

C.we need to take some measures to protect space

D.we must create better living conditions for both birds and animals

书面表达

Dear Wanhua,

It seems to me that this girl likes you very much and is trying to get you to like her in return . She is hoping to please you with these presents. You should talk to her and tell her that she does not need to give you things as you like her any way. Tell her that you feel bad when she gives you things but remember to be sensitive and gentle with her.

If she does want to be your girl friend, that from the sound of your letter is a possibility, you need to tell her very carefully that you just want to be friends. If you are kind and don`t hurt her she will change and you will be just good friends again soon. One good way to deal with this might be to tell her it is bad that she spends money on you and she should save it for herself.
