Many people like having a picnic. But what does the word mean? Where does it come from? What is a picnic?
For most people a picnic is a meal they eat outside the home, usually in a park, by a river, or even sitting in a car if the weather is cold and wet. At one time however, people had picnics at home at their own dinner tables.
The word picnic comes from the French words “pique”—meaning “to pick” or to “take”—and
“nique”—meaning “a small coin”. Everyone who came to a picnic brought something to eat. They brought it on plate from which everyone took some food. They took—or picked—a small piece of food from each plate. They had a “pique-nique”. This kind of meal was popular in Britain. The British used the French words for it but changed letters to make “picnic”. That is the way we write it today.
In some countries there are picnics on special days. Lots of people go to parks on these picnics. For most people, however, a picnic is a family party. The family puts some food and drinks in a basket, gets in the car and goes off to a nice place in the country or by the sea.

If you can draw the 2008 Olympic mascots* yourself, you’ll become the coolest one in your classmates’ eyes. They become the most popular.

If you put their names together, they say “Beijing welcomes you!” in Chinese.
Why do the mascots look like children?
“Children are the future of the world. No one can say ‘no’ to children’s smiles. So we have child-like mascots,” said Wu Guangying, a key member of the design* group. Wu came up with the idea of five dolls.
When artists finished the first design in April, they showed their work to children to see if they like them. Thirty young children and thirty students came. They were quite happy at seeing the lovely images. They had many ideas about what they stood for. “Some thought the mascots were a family of protecting the earth,” said Wu.

Dear Bill,
I have heard from you and I knew your problem. You wanted to have a happy life. You said your parents didn’t understand you. But I think you may not understand, either. Here I hope I can offer you some help.
In your life, whenever you meet any difficulty, don’t complain too much. In fact, many others can help you. Your parents can help you. Your teachers can help you. Your friends can help you. Others still can help you. But these people only help you to help yourself. That is what I want to say to you “depend on* yourself”.
There have been many great men in history. Many of them were very poor when they were young, and had no uncles, aunts, or friends to help them. Schools were few and not very good. They could not depend on them for education. They tried their best to learn something and never gave up till they became well known. One of the most famous teachers in England used to tell his pupils, “I cannot make worthy* men of you, but I can help you make men you yourselves.”
Some young men don’t try their best to make themselves valuable* to the human beings. If they see their weak points and change their ways, they can be successful. They are nothing now, and will be nothing as long as they live, unless . That’s what I think a happy life is.
Yours truly
Dr. Johnson

A. Teachers can make the students not only rich, but also famous.

D. Teachers advice* is the most important.
59. From the passage we can learn that Dr. Johnson _______________.
A. thinks highly of those who are working hard to be successful.
B. thinks highly of parents and teachers because they can help a lot
C. thinks highly of himself because he is a very great scientist
D. thinks highly of Bill because he asks a very good question
