Dear Mrs. Smith,

I was a student of yours in Grade Six, and I hope you still remember me. I’m writing this letter because I want to let you know that the school year with you was important and special time. It made a big contribution to my life.

I know I was very quiet in your class, and you never said much to me. But you did something that made a big difference in my life. You see, all through my first years in schools, I hated to read. Books were just words that had very little to do with me, and I was bored by them. I’ll never forget the first day of Grade Six when you took out a thick book and began to read the story to our class. Your voice seemed to change with the people in the story, and you drew pictures in my mind as you read aloud. Since that day, I couldn’t wait until after lunch when you would read to the class. You read us all kinds of wonderful books.

During the summer after my year in your class, I missed hearing the stories you would read. So one day I picked up a book and read it all on my own. I found out that I could make the words interesting, too. Now, I love to read! Thank you for opening the world of books for me.

Yours

Linda

There are 365 days in a year. We sleep 8 hours a day, so we have 122 days for sleeping. Then our work time has 243 days left. But there are 52 weekends in a year. Each weekend is two days. We lose another104 days a year for work. It takes us about one hour to have breakfast and supper. This comes to15 days over a year. But we can’t work all that time—we need a holiday. Let’s say we have three weeks’ holiday. We don’t work all day. Four free hours each evening takes up 61 days. We have to remember that we get 2 days’ holiday at Easter, 3 at Christmas and 1 at the New Year. There are also 4 Bank holidays. Take those10 days away and we have 32 days for work. But then we have one and a half hours’ lunch every day, and half an hour’s coffee break. That comes to30 days a year. This means that we have only a few days left for work every year!

A forest fire that burned 55 square kilometres was finally brought under control on Wednesday morning. The fire started on Sunday in Black Bear State Park and quickly spread to nearby areas.

On Monday, police evacuated (疏散) the small town of Lawson and ordered the people to leave their homes. The fire destroyed 20 homes in the area and caused heavy damage to 40 others.

Nobody was hurt. Officials said the damage to homes and cars was between $l million and $2 million. The government declared the town a disaster (灾难) area.

The fire spread quickly in the hot, dry weather. Fire fighting was difficult because of strong winds. Firemen from 55 fire departments in the state joined the National Fire Service to put out the fire. Some kept fighting for 24 hours. Fire engines and helicopters dropped water onto the fire. In order to control the fire, firemen cleared a way around the fire.

Police closed King Road to traffic on Tuesday because of heavy smoke. Thousands of tourists had to drive an hour north to Queen Road to pass the fire area.

Some people did not follow the police order. Paul Grayson sent his wife and two children to safety, but he stayed. As the fire came within 50 feet of his house, he started thinking, “Am I foolish? Did I stay here too long, just for a house?”

Listening passage:

Do you know the Olympic Games?

The Olympic Games are held every four years. Many players from all over the world take part in the Olympic Games. The old Olympic Games began around the year 776 BC in Greece and the modern games came from the old ones. Many of the sports were the same as they are now, but women were not allowed to take part in the games.

The Olympic Games stopped for a long time. But they were not forgotten by people. The first Olympic Games in modern times happened in 1896. They were held in Greece — the games were born in this country. In the 1896 games, there were 311 players from just 13 countries. After that, more and more countries took part in the games. In the 27th Sydney Summer Olympic Games in 2000, the Chinese team got 28 gold medals.

One of the great competitions is not for a medal. It’s the competition among countries to hold the Olympic Games. To hold the Olympic Games is a great prize for a country. In 2008, Beijing will hold the 29th Summer Olympic Games. We are all proud of our great county.
