I shook hands with my father in the truck, and for a long time he looked straight ahead and didn’t say a word. But I knew he was going to say a little to me. “I can’t tell anything,” he finally said. “I never went to college, and none of your brothers went to college. I can’t say don’t do this and do that, because everything is different and I don’t know what is going to come up. I can’t help much with money either, but I think things will work out. ”

He gave me a new check-book(支票簿). “If things get pushing, write a small check. But when you write one, send me a letter and let me know how much. There are some things we can always sell.” In four years all the checks I wrote were less than a thousand dollars. My part-time jobs such as reading to the blind student and sitting with the teachers’ kids filled in the financial gaps.

“You know what you want to be, and they’ll tell you what to take,” my father went on. “When you get a job, be sure it’s honest(诚实的), and work hard.” I knew that soon I would be alone in the big town, and I would be missing the cool winds and a life where your thinking was done for you.

Then my dad reached down beside his seat and brought the old, broken Bible that he had read so often, the one he used when he wanted to look something up in a friendly quarrel with one of the neighbours. I knew he would miss it. I knew, though, that I must take it.

He didn’t say read this every morning. He just said, “This can help you if you will let it.”

Did it help? I got through college without being a burden(负担)on the family. I have been able to make money since.

Soll is a village in the mountains in Western Australia, and the Hotel Post, opened by a local family, is clean and not expensive. From the hotel you can see the whole village, the forest and the mountains. Temperatures in summer are usually 200 C in the daytime, but much cooler by evening.

Enjoy Thailand

When you visit Bangkok in Thailand, don’t miss the early morning river boat to the Floating Market(漂浮市场)just outside the city. There you will find many kinds of fruits and vegetables. There you can pay for them when you sit in your boat. Don’t forget your hat: the sun can be strong and it may be as hot as 400 C about midday!

Visit Hawaii!

Maybe the most beautiful place in Hawaii is Kauai. You can visit its long, sandy beaches in the south and west of the island, and mountains and forests in the north, but be careful: there are many mosquitoes(蚊子), and don’t be surprised if it rains in the centre of the island. In a classroom in any country, the teacher teaches more than art or history or language. He or she teaches what is known as the “hidden course” ---the culture(文化)of that country.

In a society such as the United States, people with different history, culture and language join together and think highly of individualism(个人主义). Their education as a part of the society(社会), also think of this greatly. Teachers try to make each student special. Students do not have to remember a lot of information; instead, they work alone and find answers by themselves. There is often a discussion in the classroom. At an early age students learn to have their own ideas. Their education encourages personal thought. The importance is put on how to arrive at an answer and not simply to get the correct answer.

In most Asian countries, the people have the same languages, history, and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the education there shows society’s ideas in group goals rather than individualism. Children in China and Japan often work together and help each other on homework. In the classroom, the teacher often teaches in a public way. He says, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students repeat rules or information that they have been taught in order to keep them in mind.

In many ways these differences come from different educational psychology(教育心理学). In Western countries teachers make it easier for the students to learn for themselves. In the Eastern, however, teachers often feel that their job is to pass knowledge to students, or the students can’t learn anything.

71. What is the “hidden course” according to the passage?

72. What do American teachers do in class?

73. What do Asian teachers do in class?

74. What’s the main difference in education between the East and the West?

75. What do you think the proper title for the passage is?

The girl’s home is far away from her school and has to walk there. But she’s never late and does well in all her subjects. She is polite and friendly to all her teachers and classmates. They like her very much. Yesterday morning, when a car nearly hit a boy in the street, she saved him but she was badly hit. She was taken to a hospital at once. All the teachers and students knew about it and they decided to give away some money to help the good girl.
