A

YOU don’t need millions to be happy. In fact, at The Happiness Institute in Australia, a couple of hundred dollars may be enough.

The institute opened its doors last year, and, since then, men and women of all ages have been paying A$200 an hour (US$140) for lessons on how to feel great.

“You can actually increase your happiness levels. That’s what we teach,” said Timothy Sharp, founder of the institute.

Experts say that only about 15 per cent of happiness comes from income, assets and other financial factors. As much as 85 per cent comes from things such as attitude, life control and relationships.

Most of us are significantly better off financially than our parents and grandparents, but happiness levels haven’t changed to reflect that.

Studies show that once the basic needs of shelter and food are met, additional wealth adds very little to happiness.

Many decades ago, the “sage of Baltimore, Maryland”, editor HL Mencken, defined wealth as earning US$100 more than your “wife’s sister’s husband.”

Behavioral economists now say part of the reason we are richer but not happier is because we compare ourselves to people better off materially.

“The argument is that if you want to be happy there’s a very simple thing you can do: Compare yourself to people who are less well off than you — poorer, smaller house, car,” said Sharp.

The Happiness Institute aims to show you how to overcome these unhappiness factors by focusing on “more than just your bank account.”

“If I compare myself to Bill Gates then I’m always going to be down,” said Sharp.

A better thing to compare with, he said, might be Kerry Packer, Australia’s richest person who has had a kidney transplant and heart surgery in recent years.

56. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

  A. You can increase your happiness levels by attending the classes at the Happiness Institute.

  B. Most of us are happier than our parents or grandparents since we earn more.

  C. Earning US$ 100 more than your wife’s sister’s husband if you want to be happy.

  D. Both Bill Gates and Kerry Packer are examples of those who are extremely rich but obviously unhappy.

57. The underlined phrase has the same meaning as the word _______.

  A. healthy B. unhealthy C. free D. wealthy

58. The author wrote the passage to tell us _______.

  A. happiness is everything

  B. wealth is the foundation of happiness

 C. have fun at the Happiness Institute

  D. money doesn’t always mean happiness

B

Every day we go to school and listen to the teacher, and the teacher will ask us some questions. Sometimes, the classmates will ask for your opinions of the work of the class. When you are telling others in the class what you have found out about these topics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You are not taking part in a family conversation or having a chat with friends—you are in a slightly unnatural situation where a large group of people will remain silent, waiting to hear what you have to say. You must speak so that they can hear you—loudly enough and clearly enough but without trying to shout or appearing to force yourself.

Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official who might meet you. The person you are seeing will try to put you at your ease (not worried) but the situation is somewhat different from that of an ordinary conversation. You must take special care that you can be heard.

59. When you speak to the class, you should speak ________.

  A. as slowly as possible B. in a low voice C. loudly D. forcefully

60. Usually, when you speak to the class, the class is ________.

  A. to show your ability          B. to be very gentle

  C. to make sure that you can be heard D. to put the official at ease

63. The main idea of this passage is _______.

A. that we should talk in different ways in different situations

B. that we must speak loudly

C. that we must keep silent at any time

D. that we must talk with the class

C

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.

She said, “Hi, girl! My name is Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?”

I laughed and enthusiastically(热情地)responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.

“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel!”

“No seriously,” I said. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.

“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us.

“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only two secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor everyday. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die!” she said.

“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn 20 years older. If I am 87 years old, and stay in bed for a year, and never do anything, I will turn 88. Anybody can grow older. But every minute counts for young men,” she added.

“The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”

She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Song of Rose”. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics(歌词)and live them out in our daily lives.

At the year’s end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.

64. Rose made herself known to the author in a ______ manner.

  A. serious B. cold C. humorous D. crazy

  B. all people don’t grow up while growing older

D

Recently, in the hope of earning both money and social experience, I became a door-to- door salesman. I once read a saying: “If somebody wants something of you, you will be treated as warmly as spring, but if they don’t you may be treated as coldly as winter.” You may consider it an exaggeration(夸张),but if you are a salesman, it is clearly correct.

You would never have found it to be so true if you hadn’t been a salesman. You needn’t stand doubtful looks and unfriendly views; you needn’t listen to something completely wrong and nod to say that it was quite right; you needn’t always keep patience and smile; you needn’t repeat the same sentences over again; you needn’t talk to somebody you dislike.

I did this work for a month; then I decided to give it up. In spite of the above reasons, I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus sacrificing my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting lower. Even worse, I hadn’t enough time to join my classmates in college activities. Sometimes I felt lonely and unhappy because of both my study and my part-time job. Now I don’t think it is worth doing such a thing even though I was earning money at great cost.

Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about good students who do part-time work and keep high scores in class. But according to my experience, part-time work can have some strong bad effects on study.

Most students don’t see the relationship between studies and work in a correct way. In my opinion, if it isn’t must for money reasons, students should be cautious about taking up a part-time job. In western countries even the children of very rich families take part in hard jobs during the summer vacation.

68. What caused the writer to give up his part-time job?

A. Too much attention to it and his grades getting lower

B. He often missed some college activities

C. Sometimes he felt tired and unhappy

A. to do part-time job was unnecessary

B. part-time jobs had good effect upon study

C. it’s hard to plan study and work correctly

D. part-time jobs were good for students

71. Who should take part-time jobs according to the text above?

W: I ride all the way to the office these days.

M: Really? I guess you get up earlier every day.

W: Yes, it takes more time to get to the office by bike. But I've got used to it and have more energy when I work.

(Text 4)

W: What shall we do tonight, watch TV or go to the movie?

M: Let's look at the newspaper. Movie programs are usually on Page Five.

W: Here it is. "Summer in Paris" starts at 8 o'clock this evening.

M: It's said to be interesting.

(Text 5)

M: Mary, have you finished your paper?

W: Yes, I worked on it for three weeks and read many reference books. Oh, Tom, could you do me a favor? I need someone to return these books to the library for me.

M: No problem. I'm on my way there now.

第二节

(Text 6)

M: Good afternoon. Good Food Restaurant.

W: Good afternoon. I'd like to book a table please.

M:Certainly madam. Can I have your name please?

W: Betty White.

M: And your phone number please, Mrs White?

W: Work number is , and my home number .

M: And how many people will be attending?

W: There will be six people, plus my husband and myself. Eight in all.

M: OK, and would you like a private room or is the general restaurant suitable?

W: Does the private room have a KTV?

M: No, it doesn't.

W: That's good. I'll have a private room then, please.

M: And would you like to book some wine with your meal?

W: Yes, but let me see now. White wine is my favourite and I know most people like red wine.

Now put me down for two bottles of red wine and one bottle of white wine.

M: OK. And when would you like the table for?

W: Friday, please. About 7: 00. p. m.

M: I'm afraid Friday is fully booked. How about the day after?

W: That'll be fine. But not Sunday because I have to work the next day.

(Text 7)

W: Good morning. What seems to be the problem?

M: Good morning Mrs Brown. I have a cough and a fever and I feel very tired all the time.

W: And how long have you been feeling like this?

M: Three days now.

W: Let me have a look. Open your mouth please. Wider please. Now say ahh.

M: Ahhh.

W: Now take your shirt off please. Breathe in—Breathe out—Breathe in—Breathe out---OK, you can put your shirt back on now.

M: What seems to be the problem? Do I suffer from SARS or is there something wrong with my .lung?

W: Oh, no. Don't be so nervous. You just have a bad cold. Do you work in an air conditioned office?

M: Yes, I do.

W:I thought so. I see many people who work in air conditioned offices. It's the air conditioning, you see. It's really not very good for your health.

M: So what would you suggest, doctor?

W: I suggest you get out of the office as regular as possible. Walk around, and get some fresh air. That will help. You also need to get more exercise. Do you play any sports?

M: I sometimes play tennis in the summer, but to be honest, I'm too busy to get regular exercise.

W: Then I suggest you try playing more often. Say once a week.

M; OK, no problem. Thank you doctor. Bye.

W: Bye.

(Text 8)

M: Hi Wang Ling, how are your studies going?

W: Well exciting, but sometimes I find them very difficult. Most of the other students can understand the lectures without difficulty, but I have to listen carefully and take lots of notes.

M: Yes, I know what you mean. Have you considered recording the lectures?

W: No, I didn't think we were allowed to.

M: Oh, it's no problem, you just have to ask the lecturer's permission.

W: Oh. that's a good idea. And I don't get used to the teaching method. We are often asked to have discussions. You know we seldom did this in China.

M: Well, discussions are really difficult tar you at the beginning, but they are really a good way of learning. The other students have different opinions and you can learn much from them. So during a discussion listen carefully. If there's something you don't understand, you can raise questions.

W:I see.

M: Anyway, don't always worry about your studies. You need to relax yourself. Say travel to some places in Britain-

W: That sounds a good idea. I'm so glad to have a friend like you in Britain. Thank you very much.

(Text 9)

W: It's difficult to find a suitable job this year. I have pressure.

M: Now college graduates are being encouraged to start their own business. It sounds really good for us. We can get some valuable social experience, which will be helpful to our future jobs. We may also know about ourselves and society better.

W: Yes, but it is not as easy as you imagine. There are a lot of problems. The main difficulty is money. And our education doesn't provide enough knowledge on how to do it.

M: Maybe you are right. But our government allows college graduates to borrow money from banks and maybe some can get money from their parents.

W: But you have to pay back the money sooner or later. So some college graduates prefer to live a peaceful life rather than start their own business though job-hunting is very competitive.

M: Oh they don't have dreams. But I have made up my mind. How about you?

W: Well, it always takes time to consider before making a decision.

(Text 10)

The oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids. They have stood for nearly 5,000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years. There are over- eighty of them along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different in shapes from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the "Step" pyramid and the "Bent" pyramid.

Some of the pyramids still look. much the same as they must have when they were built thousands of years ago. most of the damage was caused by men who were looking for treasure or, more often, for stone to use in modem buildings .The dry climate of Egypt has helped to protect the pyramids, and their very shape has made diem less likely to fall into ruins. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important thing is that they were planned to last forever.

It is certain that plans were made for the building of the pyramids However, there are no writings or pictures to show us how the Egyptians planned or built the pyramids themselves. But now by examining the actual pyramids and various tools which have been found, we have formed a fairly dear picture of them.
