第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)
A
We might be surprised at the progress made in every field of study, but the methods of testing a person's knowledge and ability remains as old as ever they were. It is really extraordinary that after all these years, educationalists have still failed to design anything more useful and dependable than examinations. Even many people believe that examinations test what you know, it is common knowledge that they more often do the opposite. They may. be a good means of testing memory, or the skill of working rapidly under great pressure, but they can tell you nothing about a person's true ability.
As anxiety-makers, examinations are second to none. That is because so much depends on them. They are the signs of success or failure in our society. Your whole future may be decided in once fateful day. It doesn't matter that you weren't feeling very well, or something unhappy happened. Little things like that are not considered: the examination goes on. No one can give his best when he is not feeling very well, or after a sleepless night, yet this is exactly what the examination system expects him to do. The moment a child begins school he enters a world of competition where success and failure are clearly decided and measured. Can we wonder at the increasing number of "drop-outs": young people are written off as complete failures before they have even started a job.
56. According to the writer, the methods of testing a person's knowledge and ability ________.
A. are very modem B. are not useful C. remain unchanged D. are not dependable
57. Which is not mentioned in the second paragraph?
A. Examinations may cause greater anxiety than anything else.
B. Examinations may increase the number of drop-outs.
C. Examinations may decide a student's future.
D. Examinations are worldwide accepted as the mark of success.
58. The underlined word "drop-outs" in the passage probably refers to ________.
A. top students B. school graduates C. painstaking students D. unsuccessful students
59. According to the passage, which of the following can express the writer's opinion?
A. Examinations are kind of competition.
B. Examinations are good means of testing memory and skills.
C. Examinations are good methods of training painstaking students.
D. Examinations are imperfect methods of testing knowledge and ability.

At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of documents (文件) because they could be stored electronically. But for all the texts that are written, stored and sent electronically, a lot of them are still ending up on paper.
It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of use of Internet-connected computers , although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when e-mail is introduced, the printers start working overtime. "I feel in my bones this revolution is causing more trees to be cut down," says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organisation.
Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as one of its most promising new markets. Several Internet companies have been set up to help small businesses print quality documents from a computer. Earlier this week Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a plan to develop new technologies that will enable people to print even more so they can get a hard copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line e-mail, even if they are nowhere near a computer. As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet the greater demand for printers.
Does all this mean environmental concerns (环境问题) have been forgotten? Some activists suggest people have been led to believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away. " I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of, because of recycling (回收利用), " said Kelly Quirke, director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both sides are growing in popularity. The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.
60.The growing demand for paper in recent years is largely due to .
A.the rapid development of small businesses
B.the opening up of new markets
C.the printing of high quality copies
D.the increased use of the Internet
61.Environmentalists believe one possible way of dealing with the paper situation is .
A.to encourage printing more quality documents
B.to develop new printers using recycled paper
C.to find new materials for making paper
D.to plant more fast growing trees
62.Hewlett-Packard Co. has decided to develop new technologies because .
A.people are concerned about the environment
B.printers in many offices are working overtime
C.small companies need more hard copies
D.they see a growing market for printers
63.What would be the best title for the text ?
A.Computers and Printers B.E-mail and the Business World
C.Internet Revolution and Environment D.Modern Technology and New Markets

The Norwegian Government is doing its best to keep the oil industry under control. A nsw
law limits exploration to an area south of the southern end of the long coastline; production limits
have been laid down (though these have already been raised ); and oil companies have not been
allowed to employ more than a limited number of foreign workers. But the oil industry h@ a way
of getting over such problems, and few people believe that the Government wiil be able to hold
things back for long.
Ever since the war, the Government has been carrying out a program of development in
the area north of the Arctic Circle. For the past few years this program has had a great deal of
success: Tromso has been built up into a local capital with a university, a large hospital and a
healthy industry. But the oil industry has already started to draw people south, and within a few
years the whole northern city could be in ruins.
The effects of the oil industry would not be limited to the north, however. With nearly 100 percent employment, everyone can see a developing situation in which the service industries and the tourist industry wiil lose more of their workers to the oil industry. Some smaller industries might even disappear altogether when it becomes cheaper to buy goods from abroad.
The real argument over oil industry is its effects on the Norwegian way of life. Farmers and fishermen do not make up most of the population, but they are an important part of it, because Norwegians see in them many of the qualities that they regard with pride as real Norwegian. And it is the farmers and the fishermen who are most against the oil industry because of the damage that it might cause to the sea and to the countryside and to the whole country.
One Norwegian politician said: " We will soon be changed beyond all recognition."
64. " We will soon be changed beyond all recognition " in the last paragraph most exactly means
A. Norway will be changed so much that it can hardly be recognized.
B. The Norwegian way of life will change greatly, as we recognized.
C. We cannot recognize the Norwegian oil industry as it develops so quickly.
D. The Norwegian government cannot carry out the law against the changing oil industry.
65. The Norwegian Government has tried to __________.
A. encourage the oil companies to discover new oil resources
B. prevent oil companies from employing more people from northern Norway
ill northern Norway
C. help the oil companies so many of their problems
D. keep the oil industry to something near its present size
66. According to the passage, the oil industry might lead to _________ in north
A. the development of industry
B. a growth in population
C. the failure of the development program
D. the development of new towns
67. Norwegian farmers and fishermen have an important effect because _____
A. they form such a large part of Norwegian society
B. their views of life and value agree with the Norwegian government's
C. Norwegians respect them as representatives of Norwegian culture
D. They regard oil as harm to the Norwegian way of life

Dear sir,
Just over six months ago, I saw an advertisement in a morning newspaper for a set of the complete works (全集) of William Shakespeare. Your company offered this set at a low price: 15 pounds and 50 pence. I had wanted a set of Shakespeare's plays and poems or some time, so I sent for them.
Two weeks later, the books arrived, together with a set of the works of Charles Dickens which I had not wanted. So I returned the Dickens' books to you. Two more weeks passed. Then there arrived a second set of the works of Shakespeare, the same set of Dickens’ books and a set of the plays of Moliere, in French. I do not read French, and they were not useful at all, so I wrote to you.
You did not answer that letter. Instead you sent me a bill for 42 pounds and a set of the plays of Schiller, in German. I have no room for any more books, and I have no time to read them all.
Please send no more books, no more bills and no more angry letters for payment. Just send one large truck and take all the books away, leaving me only with the one set of the works of Shakespeare for which I have paid.
Yours,
Simon Walker

Parents whose children show a special interest in a particular sport feel very difficult to make a decision about their children’s careers. Should they allow their children to train to become top sports men and women? For many children it means starting school work very young, and going out with friends and other interests have to take a second place. It's very difficult to explain to a young child why he or she has to train five hours a day, even at the weekend, when most of his or her friends are playing.
Another problem is of course money. In many countries money for training is available from government for the very best young sportsmen and women. If this help can not be given, in means that it is the parents who have to find the time and the money to support their child's development—and sports clothes, transport to competitions, special equipment, etc. can all be very expensive.
Many parents are worried that it is dangerous to start serious training in a sport at an early age. Some doctors agree that young muscles may be damaged by training before they are properly developed. Professional trainers, however, believe that it is only by training young that you can reach the top as a successful sports person. It is clear that very few people do reach the top, and both parents and children should be prepared for failure even after many years of training.

Now, about the news.
An early morning fire damaged the Historic Geller House today. It destroyed the third floor of the building, but' fire-fighters saved the first and the second floors. There were a few elderly people living in the building at the time and they were carried out to safety. The Geller House was built in 1718, and was used as a hotel for over 150 years. George Washington stayed here in 1782. The Geller's House owned the house until the 1930's. Then they sold it to the Mill's family. Five years ago, it was made into a building for the elderly. Several fire departments were called to the scene. When we asked Fire Chief Andrew Barnes how the fire started, he answered that most like burning cigarette caused it. Chief Barnes promised a further investigation into the cause.

In my opinion, the Internet is helpful rather than harmful as someone else thinks. As is
known to all, the Internet is playing a more and more important part in our daily life. On the
Internet ,we can read news at home and abroad and get as much information as we can. We can
send e-mails to our family as well as to our friends. We can also attend the net school, read many
books and even teach ourselves English. We can also enjoy music, watch matches and play
computer games on the Internet. We can even do shopping on line. Besides, we can improve our
ability to operate the computer.
But we should not be given to the Internet, or we'll get our life and study destroyed. Besides,
we should keep off the harmful websites. Anyhow, this doesn't prevent the Internet becoming our
friend. We can't throw away the apple because of the core, can we?
