The answer to very great noise may not be blocking it out with earplugs but taking that noise and hearing it at its own game.
Earplugs have been the simple but effective way to stop noise affecting your mind, but their shortcoming is that they also block out sounds you may want or need to hear, such as music or someone talking to you.
The answer to this problem is “active noise cancellation(抵消)” headphones that are made up of a microphone and electronics(电子装置) that take all background low-frequency noise, turn the sound waves upside down and rebroadcast them into your ear.
The result, all the unwanted noise around are blocked out.
In effect, one set of electronically produced around wave has sucked away the unwanted sound waves of noise.
Stand next to a busy road wearing the noise cancellation headphones and the traffic noise disappears. Sit in an airplane and the engine noise dies away. In a noisy office, the noise of office equipment, people and air-conditioning is gone. You can still, however, hear music or people talking because that sound does not have a regular pattern and so the device(装置) does not block it.
56.What is the best way to keep out the unwanted noise?
A.To wear an earplug. B.To wear a headphone.
C.To wear a microphone. D.To wear electronics.

C.By changing all background low-frequency noise into an irregular pattern.
D.By sucking away all the low-frequency sound waves turned upside down.

C.The radio music and what your friend says.
D.The noise of the car and the planes passing overhead.

The BBC was founded in 1922, including radio and television services. It is based at Broadcasting House in London.
The BBC is controlled by some governors chosen by the government, but these people have complete freedom and the government can’t interfere(干涉). That is, the BBC is not the mouthpiece(代言人) of the government. It has to be as fair as possible in giving radio and television time to, for example, political parties, and religious groups.
There is a kind of interesting services in Britain-rental services. Many people prefer to rent (pay money regularly for the use of) their television sets instead of buying them. The rent for a black-and-white set is about 80 pence a week(1980). The rent of a color set is more than twice that of a black-and-white set. If the sets go wrong, people can have them repaired free of charge or replaced immediately.
Everyone who owns or rents a television set has to pay a yearly license. There is no advertising on BBC radio or television. It is from the sale of licenses that the BBC gets most of its money. A license for a black-and white set casts 8 pounds, and for a color set 18 pounds a year.
There are four specialized radio channels, which broadcast different kinds of programs. Radio 1 is mainly pop music. Radio 2 deals with light music, sport and other programs. Radio 3 broadcasts serious music, talks on serious subjects, etc, News broadcasts are mainly given by Radio 4. nature of her reception rather astonished her. She had expected that it would be more difficult, that something cold and harsh would be said-she knew not what. That she had not been put to shame and made to feel her unfortunate position seemed remarkable.
Some what encouraged, she ventured into another largest structure. It was a clothing company, and more people were well-dressed men of forty and more, surrounded by brass railings.
An office boy approached her.
“Who is it you wish to see?” he asked.
“I want to see the manager,” she said.
He ran away and spoke to one of a group of three men who were talking together. One of these came towards her.
“Well?” he said coldly. The greeting drove all courage from her at once.
“Do you need any help?” she stammered.

A Child Who Could Not See, Hear, Or Speak
For the first nineteen months of her life, Helen Keller was like other pretty happy babies in every way. Then a sudden illness destroyed her sight and hearing. Because she could not hear what other people were saying, the child could not learn to speak. For the next seven years, she lived in a world of darkness, without sounds or words.
The person who changed Helen’s world was her teacher, Anne Sullivan, who entered her life on March 3,1887. Miss Sullivan had accepted a job which seemed impossible. She had agreed to teach a blind child who had never learned to act like a human being, because no one had ever been able to guide her in any way. No one could control Helen. She acted like a young animal, rushing wildly around, throwing things, and hitting anyone whom she could reach. Who could believe that such a child could be taught?
But Anne Sullivan was a very special kind of teacher. She had been blind during part of her own childhood and had learned to read Braille, a system of writing that uses raised dots which can be felt by the fingers of a blind person. She had learned to see again after several operations, but she had never forgotten the experience of being blind.
Miss Sullivan understood Helen. She loved her and believed she could teach her. Anne Sullivan could not teach Helen Keller to speak until some other important things had been learned. The little girl had to learn to control her actions and feelings. She had to learn that she could not always do what she wished to do. She had always been able to get what she wanted by using force. The teacher had to change such habits without breaking the child’s spirit.
Miss Sullivan’s battle began. Sometimes, there was real fighting between the wild child and the strong young teacher. At last, however, the battle was won by Miss Sullivan, who had succeeded in showing Helen that she loved her and wanted to help her. The child and her teacher became friends. They continued to be friends until the teacher’s death, fifty years later.
The day on which Helen finally accepted Miss Sullivan as her friend and teacher was a great day in Helen’s life. After that, the teacher could begin to teach the child language.

Text 10:
Several weeks had passed since Dan had got his part-time job at Frank’s TV Repair Shop. And he was still Herb’s assistant. Dan had learnt a lot from Herb, but he still wondered about Herb’s attitude to his job. “He’s careless,” Dan thought. “He often puts tools in a wrong place and sometimes he doesn’t seem to care whether he keeps the job or not. I wish Frank would start sending me out on repair jobs alone. I’m sure now that I could repair sets by myself.”
Then one afternoon late in March, when Dan reported for work, Frank said to him, “Herb didn’t show up for the work today, Dan. I’m thinking about letting him go. I hate to , because he is a good worker. But he’s too careless. He didn’t even call and tell me he wasn’t coming to work today. And yesterday I had a call from a woman. She said he’d made her house dirty.”
