To the other Europeans, the best known quality of the British, and in particular of the English, is “reserve” A reserved person is one who does not talk very much to strangers, does not show much emotion(feeling) and seldom(not often) gets excited. It is difficult to get to know a reserved person he never tells you anything about himself, and you may work with him for years without knowing where he lives how many children he has, and what his interests are. English people prefer to be like that. If they are making a journey by bus, they will do their best to find an empty seat, if by train, an empty compartment If they have to share the compartment with a stranger, they may traval miles without starting a conversation. If a conversation does start, personal questions like “How old are you?” or even “What is your name?” are not easily asked, and it is quite possible for two people to know each other casualy(偶然地) for years without even knowing each other’s name. Questions like “Where did you buy your watch?” or “What is your salary?” are almost impossible. Similarly, conversation in Britain is in general much more quiet and restrained(拘束的) than, say, in Africa, and loud speech in considered ill-bred(无教养的)

Ladies and gentlemen,
Welcome to our school!
Exam-oriented education forced us to listen to our teachers while taking notes in class. We did all kinds of exercises without end, though it was 5 o’clock in the afternoon. After supper, we had to continue our exercises far into the night.
Quality-oriented education has made our school life colourful. We are active in class. Sometimes one of us teaches ourselves. We have various outside activities, such as singing, dancing, English corner, taking computer lessons. Basketball and football are our favourite sports. In the evening we can watch news on TV, do experiments by our selves and have talks and discussions of our subjects.
In a word, our school life is getting more and more colourful and interesting.
That’s all. Thank you.

Text 10:
You say you’ll have a two-week summer holiday and decide to travel a lot and visit as many new places as possible. I don’t think it’s a good idea. I’ll tell you a story about my friend Mr Bell. Last July he was in Europe. Europe is very beautiful, but his holiday wasn’t very nice. He visited four countries, and was in each of the countries only three days. He visited a great many museums and famous palaces, and was always in a hurry. Bell was on the train or on a bus almost every day. When be returned from Europe, he was very tired. So I suggest that you spend your holiday in a different way. Better to travel with a friend to one country, and visit only one city. Choose a city on the coast and you’ll be able to have a good rest on the seaside……
