search of his house.

Bouch, 26, was confident that the two officers would not fmd the package after he hid it in the bathroom.

His pets are being cared for by relatives while he is in prison.

Lockhart had been sentenced to 240 hours' community service for the same charge.

Outdoor Survival Provides Adventure Worldwide

Although there are no state controlled survival courses in Britain or the United States, there are various independent organizations offering similar activities.

Students can take part in outdoor training courses through university clubs and societies. Anyone can register with such groups, which then organize courses, training and trips for all members.

One of the most popular outdoor training programmes in both the US and Britain, is Outward Bound. It was founded in 1941 in Wales and attracts hundreds of thousands of adventurous types every year.

The courses are intended to broaden minds through experiences that build confidence, self-esteem and character. As well as specialist courses such as canoeing, leadership skills and sailing, participants can take part in week long adventure training camps which include a host of sports and survival training education skills.

Michael Williams, an American student, took part in an Outward Bound course last year. He said:"We learned lots of first aid skills, lots of natural history, lots of environmental facts, and took part in a wildlife preservation programme. Beyond that, my favourite skills learned were sailing and rock climbing."

Courses can last up to 40 days and are open to anyone over the age of 14. Students must be in general good health, but do not need to be experienced in outdoor-sports. There is no selection process; everyone is welcome, although new participants axe advised to pick a course matching their physical capacity.

Most of the British courses take place in the Brecon Beacons in Wales. Another similar organization is 'the UK Survival School, which includes courses on learning to live with the environment, sailing and winter survival. On a basic survival weekend students will learn how to get water and food, how to make fire and cook with it, to find and build a shelter, control survival life support, how to cross rivers, send off a distress signal, and to use compasses by day and night.

According to the leaders, such adventures are "an awakening, an exploration into the unknown." Out-ward Bound believes that participants will "use mind and body traveling some of the Earth's roughest wilderness areas. '

Beijing's markets will soon be flooded with more and cheaper coloufful fruit such as orange rrmngos and green durian all year round.

Thanks to a new free trade agreement signed last Monday between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEA/N), more and more tropical Southeast Asian fruit will enter the country.

The agreement means that from July 1, 2005, China and ASEAN countries will begin to cut tariffs. There are about 7, 000 products included in the cuts.

As global communication develops, countries are trading more and more grx~ls with each other. When products are sold across national borders, countries put a tax on them. This type of tax is called a tariff.

Just like removing an obstacle (~J[) from the path of these goods, the reduction of tariffs will encourage trade between China and ASEAN countries. It means more products and lower prices.

The agreement will bring real benefits for Chinese customers, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman. "In the Beijing markets you will easily find more tropical fruit like durian, which used to very, very, very expensive. Now they will be cheaper." The current tariff rate on durian is 22 per cent but will fall to zero in 2005.

In the first 10 months of this year China did US $ 84.6 billion of trade with ASEAN countries. Experts believe this may reach US $100 billion next year.

                               E

Sixteen years ago, Eileen Doyle's husband, an engineer, took his four children for an early cup of tea packed a small case and was never seen or heard of again. Eileen was astonished and in a state of despair. They had been a happy family and, as far as she knew, there had been nothing wrong with their marriage.

Every day of the year a small group of men and women quietly pack a few things of their own and without so much as a note or a goodbye close the front door for the last time, leaving their debts, their worries and their puzzled families behind them.

Last year, more than 1, 200 men and nearly as many women were reported missing from home'the highest in }5 years. Many did return home within a year, but others refused to accept the past completely and are now living a new life somewhere under a different identity.

To those left behind this form of desertion is a terrible blow to their pride and self-confidence. Even the finality of death might be preferable. At least it does not suggest refusal or failure. Worse than that, people can be left with an unfinished marriage, not knowing whether they will have to wait seven years before they are free to start a fresh life.

Clinical psychologist Paul Brown believes most departures (going away) of this kind to be well planned rather than impulsive  . "It's typical of the kind of personality which seems able to pay no attention to other people's pain and difficulties. Running away, like killing yourself, is a highly aggressive act.By creating an absence the people left behind feel upset and empty."

The Salvation Army's Investigation Department has a 70 per cent success rate in tracking missing people down. According to Lt. Col. Branwell Pratt, head of the departnent, men and women nm away for very different reasons though lack of communication is often the biggest reason for action. "The things that disturb a man's personality are problems like being tied up in debt, or serious worries about work. And some women make impossible demands on their husbands. Women usually leave for more obvious reasons but fear is at the mot of it. Men are often prepared to give their marriage another try than women, but we know that, for some wives, it would be a total impossibility to return after the way they've been treated."

72. When her husband left home Eileen Doyle

   A. could not forgive him for taking the children with him

   B. an act of selfishness

Living in a city has both advantages and disadvantages. It is often easier to find work. There are always many choices of pubhc transport. Besides, there are a lot of interesting things to do and places to see. You can eat in good restaurants, visit museums, go to cinemas and go to parks whenever you want to relax. However, living in a city is often very expensive. You must find a well-paid job, otherwise, you will not be able to afford the things you will do. What's more, the city is always crowded, noisy and dirty. It is very difficult to find a good place where people can enjoy peace and fresh air as in the countryside.

Hello. My name is Paul Harding. I'm thirty-seven and I'm the Director of a small travel company, Fan-

tasy Tours.

The name is a good one. It explains what we do. Our customers come to us with their holiday dreams

and we make them come true. Our customers are all different and so are our holidays. Some Americans want

to have a look at the Great Wall of China. A German family want to learn about hot air ballooning in England.

A Japanese group wants to play golf round Europe. We help them all.

I enjoy my holidays very much. Every summer I leave my assistant in charge and get away to my beautiful

secret island. I love that place and, I'm sorry, it's not in our guidebook. My dream is to live there all the time one day!
