Getting a new PC is one thing.Keeping it running smoothly is quite another. While a personal computer should continue to perform well for years, users know that system unsteadiness does exist.Yet you can reduce it to the smallest amount by following the tips below.
First, put in as little software as possible. You'll have fewer software-related problems and a system that is easier to manage.
Second, you should ensure that you have as much memory ( RAM ) in your PC as you need.If you run Windows 98, your computer should have at least 128 megabytes (MB ) of RAM and more. You can also get by with 128 MB of RAM if you use Windows NT or Windows 2000, but these operating systems will run much more smoothly if you have 256 MB of RAM or more.
Third, make sure you buy good hardware.No-name products may be cheaper and sometimes just as good as name-brand products, but name-brand products usually became well-known because of their steadiness. It's wise to buy products from famous companies because Windows will more often support the hardware that you buy.If you are starting out with computers, it’s also a good idea to buy ready-made systems from major manufacturers(制造商).They are likely to have been tested thoroughly with your operating system, and you will generally experience fewer problems.
Fourth, do prepare for disaster. No matter how well your system runs when you get it, the day will come when it will need to be replaced.Hopefully, you will replace it because technology has become out-dated, but you may need to replace it also because the hard drive crashes or you begin experiencing problems that no one can figure out. That's why it's important to copy your important information regularly.Whether you use a tape backup device or a CD-RW drive, it's important to make a regular backup plan and stick to it.
56.If you want to use Windows 2000, but your computer only has 64 MB.What will you have to do?
A.Change its RAM for at least 256 MB.
B.Put in good software in your computer.
C.Enlarge its memory to at least 128 MB.
D.Buy another new computer to match it.
57.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.your computer will save the important information when its hard drive crashes
B.your computer might lose all the information it stores when it crashes
C.you must not put in much software
D.you'd better use 128 MB of RAM if you run Windows NT
58.The best title of this passage would be “________”.
A.The Tips You Must Follow
B.How to Start Out With a Computer
C.How to Use Your PC Better
D.How to Keep Your PC Stable
59.What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
A.System unsteadiness.B.Personal computer.
C.To perform well.D.Getting a new PC.

LONDON— Sheep, like turkeys and ostriches, are not considered the most clever animals.British scientists said Wednesday humans may have underestimated(低估)the woolly creatures. They could be much smarter than we think.
Researchers at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge, southern England, have shown that the animals have a good memory system and are extremely good at recognizing faces— which they think is a sure sign of intelligence(聪明).
Behavioral(行为的)scientist Keith Kendrick and his friends trained 20 sheep to recognize and distinguish (differ ) 25 pairs of sheep faces and used electrodes(电极)to measure their brain activity, which showed they could remember 50 faces for up to two years.
“If they can do that with faces, the fact is that they have to have reasonable intelligence; otherwise , what is the point of having a system for remembering faces and not remembering anything else,” Kendrick said in an interview.
So hours of seemingly mindless eating grass may not be so mindless after all.
Kendrick believes sheep got their reputation as dumb animals because they live in large groups and do not appear to have much individuality(不可分性) and frightened of just about everything.
“All animals, including humans , once they are frightened don’t tend to show signs of intelligent action,” he explained.
In research reported in the science journal Nature, Kendrick and his team showed that sheep, like humans, have a specialized system in the brain which allows them to distinguish between many different faces which look extremely similar.
“The most important finding (of the study) is that they are able, both from a behavioral point of view and from looking at the way the brain is organized, to remember a large number of faces of individuals for a very long time,” said Kendrick.“It is a very strange system. They are showing similar abilities in many ways to humans.”

D.scientists don't have to research animals' memory
62.As is shown in the passage ________.
A.sheep are among the weak animals
B.it is not right for people to raise sheep in groups
C.when sheep eat grass in the fields their mind may be active

Internet shopping is a new way of shopping. You no longer need to walk round hundreds of shops looking for the items you need.Nowadays, you can shop for just about anything from your armchair. All you need is a computer which is linked to the Internet.Shopping on the Internet is becoming increasingly popular. In the United States,50 percent of families have computers at home and almost one third are linked to the Internet.Americans spent over US 2.5 billion on Internet shopping in 1998.This figure is expected to reach US 11 billion by the year 2004.

Internet shopping offers a number of benefits(好处)for the shopper. The most important advantage is convenience. You can shop when you like as the on-line shops are open 24 hours a day,and you do not have to queue with other shoppers at the check-out counters.Secondly,it is easy to find what you are looking for on the Internet.Even out-of-print books may be ordered on line. Finally,it is often cheaper to buy goods through the Internet, and you can tell the shop exactly what you want.
The main disadvantage of Internet shopping is that you cannot actually see the products you are buying or check their quality. Also, many people enjoy shopping in the city and miss the opportunity to talk to friends. Some people are worried about paying for goods using credit cards,so Internet companies are now finding ways to make on-line payment safe.

M:Hello,Mary. Why are you standing here in the cold wind?
W:I'm waiting for a bus,but the buses are very full at this time of the day.
M:Where are you going? This isn't your way home. You must take a bus from the other side of the street to go home.
W:I'm not going home now.I'm going for a walk in the park.I always like to go for a walk before lunch.
M:Then why aren't you going there on foot? Why are you going by bus?Why not walk to the park from here?It isn't very far.
W:Oh,no,Bill.It isn't very interesting to walk through the streets;in fact,it's very boring.So I always take Bus No.3.
(Text 8)
M:Hey,Helen.Why aren't you ready?It's almost 7 o'clock!
W:I'm sorry,Paul.I'm not going.I have to study.
M:But you can study later.Don't you want to go?
W:No,not really.I don't like dinner parties.
M:But what can I tell the Browns?
W:Tell them I'm sick.
(Text 9)
W:Can I talk to you for a moment,Tom?
M:Of course,Julia.Sit down.What is it?
W:I've decided to leave.
M:Leave?
W:Yes.
M:Oh,no.Is it because we're moving out of London?
W:Well,yes.But there are other reasons.
M:I see you never liked working here.
W:No,no.I've enjoyed working here.But…
M:But what?
W:Well,I haven't had time for other things.I've worked here for four years. And I'd like to do something different.
M:What do you mean,something different?
W:I want to travel, you know.I have never been to other countries.
W:Haven't you?
M:No,I haven't.I want to live in Italy and learn to speak a different language.
M:Well,what can I say?I'm really sorry.But I understand.
W:Thank you, Tom.

Good evening. You are listening to Pop World of BBC International.I'm Susan Welch.Well, first,I would like to say a few words to my dear listeners who are not very familiar with this program.
Since many people want to listen to and understand pop songs, radio producers at BBC International have made hundreds of programs over the years. We have a vast library of“golden old songs”,classics,as well as the“latest pop songs”.
For those of you who like a bit of background with your favorite music, there's “The History of Pop” or “The Road to Music”.These two series bring you the language of pop music and information about the periods and the artists. If you want to hear from the artists themselves, there's a new series called “About the Big Hits”.It is based on interviews with popular singers and songwriters. They talk to us about the meaning and ideas behind their songs.
If you want to understand the words to the big music hits, “Pop Words” is the program for you. After all it's hard enough for native English speakers to understand most pop songs. So,if English isn't your first language, you shouldn't be surprised if the words to many songs leave you in the dark.
