When I come across a good essay in reading newspapers,I often feel like cutting and keeping it.But just as I am about to do so I find the article on the opposite side is as much interesting. It may be a discussion of the way to keep in good health,or advice about how to be oneself in society. If I cut the front essay, the opposite one is bound to suffer damage, leaving out half of it or keeping the text without the subject. As a result, the scissors would stay before they start,or halfway done when I find out the result that inevitably causes my regret.

Sometimes two things are to be done at the same time, both deserving(worthy) your attention. You can only take up one of them;the other has to wait or be given up.But you know the future is unpredictable — the changed situation may not allow you to do what is left behind. Thus you are caught in a fix and feel sad.How come that nice opportunities(机会)and brilliant ideas should gather around all at once? It may happen that your life changes dramatically on your preference of one alternative (choice) to the other.

In fact that is what life is like:we are often faced with the two opposite sides of a thing which are both desirable like newspaper cutting. It often occurs that our attention is drawn to one thing only after we take up another. The former may be more important than the latter and give rise to a divide mind.I still remember a philosopher's(哲学家)remarks: “When one door shuts, another opens in life.” So a passive choice may not be a bad one.

Whatever we do in our lifetime, wherever life's storm makes us go,there must be something we can achieve, some shore we can land on.Don't forget God always keeps an alternative door open for every one. While the front door is closed, there must be another open for you.

The conflict(冲突)between India and Pakistan goes back more than 50 years.

In 1947,an old country ruled by the British was split(分裂),creating two new states— India and Pakistan, and various regions in it held votes to decide whether they wanted to be a part of India or of Pakistan. The results came in and the new borders were drawn up.But the transition had problems, the most serious of which were in Kashmir.

When the deadline for the vote passed,Kashmir had failed to choose whether it wanted to be part of India or Pakistan, therefore leaving the issue(问题)unresolved.

Apart from the territorial dispute(领土争端),there are other problems, religion, for example, that makes the situation in Kashmir even more complicated(复杂).

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since gaining independence, and in the last 10 years, fighting in Kashmir has claimed(夺去)the lives of between 30 000 and 60 000 people.

The recent tensions(紧张的状态)between them started in December 2001,when India's Parliament building in New Delhi was attacked.India insisted that the attack was staged by Pakistan while Pakistan refused to admit this.

The unsteady situation in South Asia caught the attention of the world mainly because of the threat(威胁)of a nuclear war. Both countries are among only a handful of nuclear powers in the world (the others are the United States,Russia,China,Britain, and France).India and Pakistan shocked the world by testing nuclear weapons within weeks in May 1998.It is believed that now India has about 100 to 150 nuclear warheads(弹头)and Pakistan 25 to 50.

The international community has been concerned(关切)with the tension in this area.During a recent meeting aimed at better cooperation in the fight against terrorism, the European Union and 10 Asian nations including China,Japan and South Korea urged the two nations to take every necessary step to keep the peace.

63.After reading the passage,we can get a general impression that ________.

A.Kashmir had been ruled by India for more than 50 years and won her independence in 1947 B.Pakistan government supported terrorists in attacking India's Parliament building

C.the author is seriously concerned about the unsteady situation between the two countries

D.the main purpose of the meeting held by the European Union and 10 Asian nations was to settle the issue of Kashmir

64.We can infer from the passage that ________.

A.as a matter of fact,Kashmir belongs to Pakistan

B.China called on the two nations to take steps to keep the situation from getting worse

C.mixed with other issues, the situation in Kashmir becomes more complicated

D.force and the threat of force cannot solve the conflicts and disputes between nations

C 

For years it has been possible to set up cameras to take pictures of cars as they speed along highways, jump lights or drive too fast down the street.

However, even if the pictures are taken automatically, someone still has to do all the paperwork of sending out fines. But now a British company called EEV has come up with a computerized video system that can do it all automatically.

They suggest that all number plates have a bar code as well as the usual number. The bar codes are just stripes of lines like those you see on food packets but bigger.EEV's high speed video camera system can read a bar-coded number plate even if the car is doing over 100 miles per hour. The computer controlling the system could then use the information from the bar code to find out the name and address of the driver(from the car records),print out the fine and send it off automatically. The inventors also suggest that the system should watch traffic to help catch stolen cars.

The new electronic system could be watching everyone that passes the cameras! Many people find the idea that “big brother is watching you” is more of a worry than a few motorists getting away with driving too fast.Besides, some people will be very unhappy to realize that with the new system the police should find out where a particular car has been.

65.The best title for the article can be________. 

A.People Who Drive Too Fast 

B.Stop People from Driving Too Fast 

A.help catch stolen cars 

B.add code numbers 

C.watch everyone who drives too fast 

D.print out bar codes automatically 

69.The sentence“‘Big brother is watching you' is more of a worry than…”means that many people________. 

The atmosphere and oceans are not the only parts of the environment being damaged.Rain forests are being quickly destroyed as well, and their survival is questionable.E.O.Wilson,a biologist at Harvard, called the depletion(枯竭、耗尽)of rain forest areas “the greatest extinction since the end of the age of dinosaurs(恐龙)”.

Unlike some environmental issues, rain forest depletion has fortunately received significant public and media attention.Despite the opposition to the cutting down of rain forests, the problem continues.Every year,Brazil chops down an area of forest the size of the state of Nebraska. In addition to the Amazon's rain forests, many other forests are being cut down as well.In Indonesia,Zaire,Papua-new Guinea,Malaysia,Burma, the Philippines,Peru,Colombia,Bolivia, and Venezuela, rain forests that were once great have been lost.

According to some estimates,50 million acres of rain forest are cut down every year. The United Nations says the figure is closer to 17 million acres. The World Wildlife Fund says that every minute,25 to 50 acres are cut or burned to the ground.

The world's growing population has been a primary reason of rain forest destruction.More people need land to live on and wood products to consume.Limiting population growth may be the first in a series of steps that would limit the destruction of the rain forests.

70.Why did Wilson regard“the greatest extinction since the end of the age of dinosaurs”to be the depletion of rain forest areas? 

B.Luckily people and mass media all paid special attention to the depletion of rain forests. 

C.People have stopped cutting down rain forests because of the opposition of most people. 

Today we visited Qinghua University.Early in the morning we arrived at the gate of Qinghua University, where an old professor gave us a warm welcome.First,we were shown around and then we went to the library, where we saw many books and some university students reading attentively. Then we visited the lab building. In the campus, some students were under the trees. The old professor gave us a lecture on science in the afternoon.Time passed quickly before we knew it.We had to say good-bye to the professor. At night,I worked harder at my lessons than usual and made up my mid to be a student of Qinghua University.

(Text 10) 

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to our tour. This morning,we're going to take you to some points of historical interest in the city.If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. 

If you look out of the window on your right, you'll see the Grange, one of the oldest buildings in the city.It was built by our first mayor 200 years ago,and still has most of the original furniture.Perhaps the most interesting thing is that every Saturday afternoon you can come and watch them bake bread in the way it was done 200 years ago. 

We'll stop in a moment at Bridgeton Castle. This castle was built by Sir Henry Pellat for his young wife.He bought almost all of the building materials from England.Unfortunately,Henry's young wife became ill and died before the castle was completed.Henry became so unhappy that he left the castle and returned to England. No family members ever lived there. 
