Sheep Smarter than Thought
London-Sheep, like turkeys and ostriches, are not considered the most clever animals. British scientists said last Wednesday humans may have underestimated(低估) the woolly creatures. They could be much smarter than we think.
Researchers at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge, southern England, have shown that the animals have a good memory system and are extremely good at recognizing faces—which they think is a sure sign of intelligence(聪明).
Behavioural(行为的)scientist Keith Kendrick and his friends trained 20 sheep to recognize and distinguish(区别)25 pairs of sheep faces and used electrodes(电极) to measure their brain activity, which showed they could remember 50 faces for up to two years.
“If they can do that with faces, the fact is that they have to have reasonable intelligence; otherwise, what is the point of having a system for remembering faces and not remembering anything else, ” Kendrick said in an interview.
So hours of seemingly mindless eating grass may not be so mindless after all.
Kendrick believes sheep got their reputation(名声) as dumb (unable to speak) animals because they live in large groups and do not appear to tend of just about everything.
“All animals, including humans, once they are frightened don’t tend to show signs of intelligent action, ” he explained.
In research reported in the science journal Nature, Kendrick and his team showed that
sheep , like human, have a specialized system in the brain which allows them to distinguish between many different faces which look extremely similar.
“The most important finding(of the study ) is that they are able, both from a behavioural point of view and from looking at the way the brain is organized, to remember a large number of faces of individuals(个体) for a very long time, ” said Kendrick. “It is a very strange system. They are showing similar abilities in many ways to humans.”

Oldies Can Now Go to College
Cao Ye, a married worker aged 38, may soon be able to fulfill a dream of going to college thanks to new recruitment(录取) reforms for higher education.
The change puts an end to China’s 20-year-old restrictions(约束) on the age and marital status(婚姻状况) of people able to take college entrance examination. From 2001—this year’s national entrance examination, the rule that hopefuls should be “single and generally under 25 years old” will no longer be in use.
“Since I failed the entrance examination 13 years ago, I have been in deep despair because I thought I would never have a chance to attend college, ”said Cao Ye, who is working at a glass factory. Fortunately, the new rule gives him a second chance.
In the late 1970s, China removed age and marital status restrictions because many people had missed out on education during the “Cultural Revolution” (1966~1976).But since 1979, because of a shortage of educational resources, the right has been given only to youngsters most of whom have been high-school graduates.
Many people, like Cao, who failed the entrance examinations before, had to give up the chance to go to college. These people had no choice but to teach themselves or join correspondence courses(函授) when they wanted a higher education. Now people, regardless of their age, can take national entrance examinations along with high school graduates.
In another change, graduates from secondary vocational () schools can also apply for higher educational colleges instead of only being able to apply for higher vocational school.

Step out of Comfort zones
Although international students want to dive into American culture, it is easier to stay close to the familiar.
“Most international students told me that they want to meet and make friends with as many Americans as they can, ” said Mark Galloway, Institute for International Studies(IIs) student adviser at Murray State University.
“But in reality, they’re comfortable with being around people from their own country, if possible.”
Testing of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is an admissions(入学) test for international students enrolling in American universities. Galloway said students’ scores decreased when they spent less time with American students.
More than 450 international students are on campus at Murray State University. Thailand, Japan, South Korea, China and Germany are the countries with the most students this semester, according to an IIs report.
Wichien Eampromate, Thai Student Association president, said poor English ability and cultural differences make it difficult for Thai students to spend time with Americans.
“We eat different things; we do different kinds of things,” said Eampromate.
On the other hand , Joon-Seong Bae, an exchange student from Korea University, said he tries to avoid hanging around other Koreans.
But it is not easy for him. He said he is less comfortable with Americans because he can’t say everything he wants to say, and not all Americans are patient with his limited English.
“There were two or three Americans and me,” Bae said. “We talked about something. As time went by, I was kind of excluded(排斥在外) because they talked to each other.”
While international students venture outside their comfort zones, American students also have the opportunity to be exposed to other cultures.
“I know there are a lot (of American students ) who want to get to know international students, ” said Philip Lee, senior from Boonville, Indiana. “They are just uncomfortable.”
Lee said he has learned about life from his international friends although it is sometimes a challenge.
“I can’t live a comfortable life all the time, ” Lee said. “I realized there is a great benefit of stepping out of my comfort zone to meet people.”

Telecommuting
Nancy Alley, human resources manager at TBWA Chiat, doesn’t spend several hours a day driving to her office many miles from home. She stays at home in her pajamas(睡衣) with a pile of resumes(履行) , talking with managers over the phone and faxing in paperwork. Instead of chatting with coworkers, she e-mails to them. Nancy is a telecommuter, someone who works some or all of the time at home, and she is part of a trend. Since 1990, the number of U.S. telecommuters has grown from 4.2 million to 9.2 million, and by the turn of the century, 55 million people worldwide have been telecommuting.
To many cars on the highway, the high cost of office space, reduced work force— all these leak to the growth of telecommuting. What makes it possible is technology. Personal computers, fax machines, e-mails, and kinds of phone lines provide the fast communication required for telecommuting.
The experience of many companies suggests that telecommuting can increase productivity. At Georgia Power Company, for example, a pilot telecommuting project was so successful that the company decided to increase the number of telecommuters by 300%. The company reduced the cost of office space by $1 million a year, increased productivity and saved workers 750 miles a day.
Telecommuting, however, is not without its weaknesses. At one computer software firm, the information system manager offered telecommuting as a choice to her 100 workers. After three months, the workers reported that being away from the office was had for their work. Programmers missed being able to chat with analysts(分析员) about their work trouble and everyone reported that they were interrupted at home more often. As part of its cost-cutting plan, Nestle required 140 sales workers to telecommute. Facing many technical problems with telephone lines and slow computer networking. Most of these telecommuters found it a disappointing experience. Telecommuting also makes many workers feel lonely and out of touch, leading to less productivity. By mixing work with family, telecommuting is often interrupted by family life.
Clearly it is impossible for telecommuting to be used in every company.

A. people working at home with the help of phones, fax, personal computers and so on

69. What is the trend of telecommuting in the U.S.A. in the future?

C. The number of telecommuters will be reduced.
D. More and more workers will dislike telecommuting.

A. the high cost of office space
B. the large number of cars on highways
C. reduced workers
D. communications technology
71. Georgia Power Company is used as an example to show that_______.
A. the cost of office space was reduced by $ 100, 000 a year
B. 750 miles a day was saved for the workers
C. less cost and high productivity were brought about by telecommuting
D. more, workers stayed at home
