Tony Bennett, the American singer recently touring Britain, can’t remember how many times he has sung his standard hit “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”.He sang it again to his audience at the London Palladium last night.

“I never get tired of singing it,” he said,“I like it too much. It’s a great city and it’s a good song.”

Farmer Ed Rawlings smiles as he looks at his orange trees. The young oranges are growing well in Florida’s weather. Warm sunshine and gelte rains, along with Ed Rawlings’ expert care ,w

But Ed has to fight against Florida’s changeable winter. In January and February, temperatures can destroy Ed’s entire orange crop. Having farmed in Florida for the past 35 years, Ed Rawlings is prepared for the frosts(霜).When temperatures drop below freezing, Ed tries to save his crop by watering his orange trees. The water freezes and forms a thin layer(层)ice on the trees. Strange as it may sound, this layer of ice actually keeps the fruit warm.

What happens is simple. When the trees are watered, the water loses heat and becomes ice. The warmth of the heat it loses is sucked in by the fruit and keeps its temperature at a safe level. Ed Rawlings has effectively used this method to save many orange crops.

But Ed still faces some difficulties. The trees should be watered at the exact moment the temperature drops to the freezing point. Also, just the right quantity of water must be used . Too much water can form a thick layer of ice that will break the trees’ branches. Another difficulty is that wind blows away the heat. So Ed has to worry about not only when but also how often his trees should be watered, and how much water should be used.

Computer technology may help Ed Rawlings with some of these worries. With equipment, air and soil temperatures and wind speed can be measured. The information is fed into a computer which can tell when temperatures drop to freezing. The computer can correctly decide the quantity of water to be used and how frequently the trees should be watered Ed Rawlings will find looking after his orange trees a lot easier with the help of a computer, and we’ll have the benefits(or advantages)of computer-age oranges.

60.The passage is mainly about .

C.growing oranges in Florida’s changeable weather

    D.different ways of frost protection

A.are too expensive for small farmers

B.can be a valuable tool for the farmer

C.can be used to help oranges grow bigger

D.cannot take the place of the farmer’s experience and judgement

The business of on-line shopping so far has been disappointing for the pioneering retailers(零售商)who are already offering their services. The problem is that consumers, who say they are interested in the services, are mostly“just looking”.

The Internet offers, among other things, an electronic“mall”with scores of retailers selling everything from computer equipment to income tax preparation services. As with anything on the Internet, it is highly decentralized (分散),with no one authority keeping track of transactions (交易),so reports of sales are largely inaccurate(不准确).But many of the reports are discouraging.

But it is far too soon to sound the death bell for electronic retailing. One reason, say analysts and service providers, is that consumers are only beginning to understand the possibilities of the new technology.

On-line shopping is just the first link to a host of data bases and multimedia services, allowing customers to research their purchases(购买)and communicate directly with the seller for product service and support. The new services also promise visuals of a quality equal to those on television.

Today, few consumers have equipment in their homes capable of receiving such images and data. But McKinsey & Co. the management consulting firm, estimates that the electronic shopping business will reach $ 4 billion to $ 5 billion a year in the United States by the year 2003. That supposes that just 11 percent of US households will have the technology needed to make on line shopping work, says George Desvaux, a McKinsey partner.

In the end, the success of on-line shopping may turn on something as simple—and as complicated(复杂)—as changing the public’s idea of how to shop.“The problem with consumers,”says Mr. Desvaux, “is that it is very difficult for them to recognize whether or not they want a product until they have already tried it.”

68.By “an electronic mall”(in Line l, Paragraph 2)the writer refers to    .

    A.the pioneering small businesses

B.the business transaction by a computer

C.a number of functions a computer offers

D.a number of shops offering services throught a computer

69.On-line shopping in the US has not been doing well mainly because .

A.consumers only want to do research on some products

B.consumers are not very familiar with the new technology

C.consumers are not willing to spend money buying the equipment

D.consumers only want to get some relevant(相关的)information about the product

70.In on-line shopping, consumers are also able to .

A.do their own research on all the products

B.meet the seller on their televisions at home

C.see quality goods on sale in all big companies

D.see the products and the relevant data on their computers

71.The underlined word“that”(in Paragraph 5)refers to .

A.McKinsey & Co.’ s estimates about the yearly sales of electronic shopping in the US

B.Mckinsey & Co.’ s estimates about on-line shopping in the US by 2003

C.consumers having the right equipment at home by 2003

D.the on-line shopping business in the US

For more than two days in September 1974, the people of Honduras shut their windows, locked their doors and stayed in their homes. Fifi was outside, and they were frightened.

8,000 people had been dead when Fifi left. Fifi wasn’t a pet dog as the name suggests. It was a hurricane, one of the most destructive natural phenomena(现象)in the world.

Why do we give human names to wind and rain and cloud? We didn’t always. Two hundred years ago, many hurricanes in the Caribbean were named after the saint’s day(圣徒逝世忌日)on which the storm occurred. Later, storms were known by the name of the city where they came ashore. Experts then tried naming storms after the latitude(纬度)and longitude where they occurred, Finally, in 1953, hurricanes started getting people’s names—specifically, female names. Male names were added in 1979.

There are six sets of names for what the experts call“Atlantic tropical cyclones (热带气旋)”.Each list is used every six years and consists of 21 names, starting with every letter but Q,U,X,Y and Z. Male names and female names are used in turn. A storm won’t get a name until its winds reach 39mph or about 62. 4kph, at which point it becomes a tropical storm. At 74mph or 118.4kph it’s declared a hurricane.

The names on the list are used only for storms that form off the Atlantic coast of the US. There are separate lists for the Pacific. So what happens if a hurricane should cross from the Atlantic to the Pacific? It’s happened before. The storm just gets a new name and sometimes a new sex. Max Mayfield is the director of the National Hurricane Centre, in Miami, Florida. He’s in charge of picking new names for storms off the Atlantic coast. He and the experts in two dozen other countries in the Caribbean, North America vote on what names will replace retired names. In 2007. for example, Andrea, and Melissa will take the place of Allison, and Michelle. “If we have a hurricane that causes a large loss of life or damage, a country will request that name be retired, he said. Sometimes, people write in to suggest names for hurricanes . Mayfield said they got a letter from a man in Florida, who wanted them to name a hurricane after his first wife. He said it had to be a hurricane that caused terrible damage .The world would know what he had experienced living with the woman for 18 years.

72.Which of the following is most likely to be the name of a hurricane or a storm before 1979?

    A.Arthur B.Peter C.Shirley D.Honduras

73.We may learn from the text that .

A.all storms don’t get their names

B.in 2007, the experts will make new name lists

C.only Mayfield decides which name to choose

D.experts use names mostly suggested by people

74.How long can the six sets of names be used?

    A.126 years. B.6 years C.21 years D.36 years

75.The man in Florida suggested naming a hurricane after his first wife because he wanted to

      .

A.express his deep love for her

B.show his sadness after losing her

C.make her known by the people in Florida

D.tell people how unhappily he was living with her
