In 1909 an English newspaper offered £ 1,000 to the first man to fly
across the English Channel in an aeroplane.Today,
modern jets cross it in minutes. But at that time it still
seemed a good distance. The race to win the money soon
became a race between two men. Both were very colourful.
One was Louis Bleriot. He owned a
factory in France that made motor car lamps. He was
already well known as a pilot (飞行员) because he had had
accidents several times. Some people laughed at him.One man said, “He may not be the first to fly across the Channel but
he will certainly be the first to die in an accident!” But Bleriot was really a
good and brave pilot. He also had many good ideas about aeroplane
design.
The other man was Hubert Latham. He
was half French and half English. He took up flying when
his doctors told him he had only a year to live.“Oh,
well,” he said, “if I’ m going to die soon, I think I shall have a dangerous
and interesting life now.” Latham was the first to try
the flight (飞行) across the Channel.Ten kilometres from the French coast, his plane had some trouble. It fell down into the water and began to sink under the water.A boat reached Latham just in time.He was
sitting calmly on the wing and was coolly lighting a cigarette (香烟).Bleriot took off six days later. He flew into
some very bad weather and very low cloud. He somehow got
to the English side and landed in a farmer’s field. When
he did so, a customs (海关) officer rushed up to his
plane.Planes have changed since then, but customs
officers have not.“Have you anything to declare?” The
officer demanded.

wizard (奇才).There was simply nothing to excite a desire
for education.Of course, when I grew up, I did not know

The flying fox is not a fox at all.It
is an extra large bat that has got a fox’s head, and that feeds on fruit
instead of insects (昆虫).Like all bats, flying foxes
hang themselves by their toes when at rest, and travel in great crowds when out
flying.A group will live in one spot for years.Sometimes several hundred of them occupy (占据) a single tree.As they return to the tree
toward sunrise, they quarrel among themselves and fight for the best places
until long after daylight.
Flying foxes have babies once a year, giving birth to only
one at a time.At first the mother has to carry the baby
on her breast wherever she goes.Later she leaves it
hanging up, and brings back food for it to eat.Sometimes
a baby bat falls down to the ground and squeaks (尖叫)
for help. Then the older ones swoop (俯冲) down and try to pick it up.If they fail to
do so, it will die.Often hundreds of dead baby bats can

第一节
1. M: That’s a nice car. Is it new?
W: No. I got it almost 5 years ago, but it’s still in good condition.
2. W: Would you rather eat at home or go out tonight?
M: I’d rather go out, but I don’t mind preparing supper at home if you’d
rather not go.
3. M: Would you like some hot coffee or tea?
W: I do like them both, but I’d rather have something cold.
4. W: Good afternoon. This is Dick Williams at World Travel Company. Is Mr.
Black there?
M: No. He’s out to lunch. I’ll be glad to take a message.
5. W: When I heard the National Anthem, I almost cried?
M: It was really quite moving.
第二节
6. W: Can I get you something?
M: Yes, a hamburger, please?
W: Anything to drink?
M: Oh, yeah. I’m thirsty. A Coke, please.
W: Here you are. That’s $3.3.
M: I think that’s wrong. It can’t be 3.3. It’s 2.3.
W: Oh, you are right. Sorry.
7. M: You don’t look very happy. What seems to be the problem?
W: I’ve got to write an English composition for tomorrow’s class. But I don’t
have any ideas now.
M: That shouldn’t be too hard. Remember the photos you showed me last
week?
W: Yes, I took them at my father’s farm last summer.
M: Why didn’t you write about your life on the farm? It will be very
interesting.
W: That’s a good idea. And I can also tell about the animals on the

M: Well, you can begin your composition now. And I’ve got to finish
mine.
W: Thanks for your help.
8. W: Why don’t you get another job for a change?
M: But I like my job.

M: But the money’s not bad and there’s plenty of fresh air.
W: If I were you, I’d take some kind of direction lawyer teaching.
M: Teaching? Anything but that. It’s so boring.
W: Come on, you really must think of the future.
M: I’ll tell you what. I’d like to be a doctor.
W: Well, you should think very seriously about that. It means a lot of
study, and then working all sorts of hours.
M: Yes, maybe. But the idea sounds interesting.
W: Well, then, you ought to get more information about it as soon as
possible.
9. M: Please tell us what it is like to go to school in Australia, Sue.
W: I’ll be glad to. I go to Bellview High School in North Sydney. I’ve just
finished my exams in the 11th year and have come to China for a short holiday.
Next year I’ll go into the 12th year, which will be my last year of high
school. My favorite subject is history but I also study English, Chinese, maths
and science.
M: How many school holidays do you have in Australia?
W: We have two weeks’ holidays in March, July and October and a
five-week holiday during our summer.
M: Do you want to go to university when you finish your high school?

Great Wall. I also saw the Ming Tombs. Tomorrow I’m going to see the Forbidden

two days in Hong Kong before I leave.
M: Thank you, Sue. I hope you’ll enjoy the rest of your holiday in
China.
10. My husband, Mike and I were at a restaurant with his boss. While Mike began
a story I was sure he had told before, I gave him a kick under the table. There
was no response, so I gave him another one. Still the story went on. Suddenly
he stopped, smiled and said, “Oh, but I’ve told you this one before, haven’t
I?” We all laughed and changed the topic. Later, on the dance floor, I asked my
husband why it had taken him so long to get my message. “What do you mean?” he
replied. “I stopped the story as soon as you kicked me.” “But I kicked you twice,
and it still took you a while to stop!” Suddenly we realized what had happened.
When we returned to our table, the boss smiled and said, “After the second one,
I guessed it was not for me, so I passed it along and kicked you.”
