Chris Wall and Dan Dominguez have been dreaming big since they were 17-year-old high school students in EL Paso, Tex. U S A. At that time they flew alone in a plane to Alaska and back.

Now they were really dreaming big. They were planning to take off this September on an around-the-world flight. And all went well, the 21-year-old pilots at last broke a world record by becoming the youngest to fly by themselves around the Earth.

As they circled the world in their small, twin-engine airplane, they would be taking plenty of kids along for the ride, because students could follow their flight by way of the Internet. The flight took three months and made about 32 stops.

Their plane was highly versatile (多用途的). Dan said, “It can take off from a muddy strip in Bali, the deserts of Egypt, the jungles of Africa, yet it can still cross the ocean.”

Dan, a commercial pilot and flight instructor, recently graduated from the University of Rochester New York State. Chris is a three-year student at Rice University in Houston, Tex.

The purpose of their project, called World Flight 2000, was to make education more interactive and to encourage young people to follow their dreams no matter how challenging they are.

Said Dan:“We want to share the spirit of flying and show students that anything is possible with a good education, persistence and perseverance.”

At each stop, the two pilots talked with students about their trip. They also visited schools all over the United States to tell about their adventures.

Man-made flowers are used for scientific as well as for decorative purposes. They are made from a variety of materials, such as wax and glass, so skillfully that you can hardly tell them from natural flowers.

In making such models, good skill and artistry are called for, as well as thorough knowledge of plant structure. The collection of glass flowers in the Botanical Museum of Harvard University is the most famous in North America and is widely known throughout the scientific world. In all, there are several thousand models in colored glass, the work of two artist-naturalists, Leopold Blaschka and his son Rudolph.

The aim was to have the collection represent at least one member of each flower family native to the United States. Although it was never completed, it contains more than seven hundred species representing 164 families of flowering plants, a group of fruits showing the effect of fungus(霉菌) diseases, and thousands of flower parts and magnified (放大的) details. Every detail of these is very well reproduced in color and structure. The models are kept in locked cases as they are too valuable and fragile for classroom use.

Dorothea Dix left home at an early age—of her own free will—to live with her grandmother.

At fourteen, Dorothea was teaching school at Worcester, Massachusetts. A short time after she had begun teaching, she established a school for young girls in her grandparents’ home. Stress was placed on moral character at Dorothea’s school, which she conducted until she was thirty-three.

She was forced to give up teaching at her grandparents’ home, however, when she became ill. A few years of inactivity followed.

After her recovery Dorothea began to teach again, accepting a Sunday school class in the East Cambridge, Massachusetts’ jail. Here, she first came upon insane (mad) people locked up together with criminals.

In those days insane people were treated even worse than criminals. There were only a few asylums(收容所) in the entire country. Therefore jails, poorhouses, and houses of correction were used to confine the insane.

Dorothea Dix made a careful investigation of inhuman treatment of the insane. It was considered unfeminine for a woman to devote herself to such work at this time. But this did not stop Dorothea Dix in her efforts to provide proper medical care for the insane.

Gradually, because of her investigations, conditions were improved. More than thirty mental institutions were founded or reestablished in the United States because of her efforts. Dorothea also extended her investigations to England and to other parts of Europe.

Dorothea served as the head of women hospital nurses in the army for a few years. When the war was over, she returned to her work of improving conditions for insane people.

C. her trip to England for investigations D. her grandmother’ s death

67. After reading the story we can conclude that Dorothea Dix ________.

  A. was a brave independent person with sense of justice

  B. considered most criminals mentally unstable

  C. couldn’t fit her idea to the new condition

LEEDS, England--- A Leeds University psychology professor is teaching a course to help dozens of Bristons forgive their enemies.

“The hatred we hold within us is a cancer,” Professor Ken Hart said, adding that holding in anger can lead to problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

More than seventy people have become members in Hart’s first 20-week workshop in London--- a course he says is the first of its kind in the world.

These are people who are sick and tired of living with a memory. They realize their bitterness is a poison they think they can pour out, but they end up drinking it themselves, said Canadian- born Hart.

The students meet in groups of eight to ten for a two-hour workshop with an adviser every fortnight.

The course, ending in July, is expected to get rid of the cancer of hate in these people. “People have lots of the attitudes towards forgiveness,” he said. “People confuse forgiveness with forgetting. Forgiveness means changing from a negative attitude to a positive one.”

Hart and his team have created instructions to provide the training needed.

“The main idea is to give you guidelines on how to look at various kinds of angers and how they affect you, and how to change your attitudes towards the person you’re angry with,” said Norman Claringbull, a senior expert on the forgiveness project. Hart said he believes forgiveness is a skill that can be taught, as these people “want to get free of the past.”

C.    without hatred people will have less trouble connected with blood and heart

D. people who suffer from blood pressure and heart disease must have many enemies

70.If you’re a member of Hart’s workshop, you’ll _______.

A.    pay a large amount of money

B.    go to the course every night in twenty weeks

C.    attend a gathering twice a month

D. pour out everything stored in your mind in the workshop

71.The author wrote this passage in order to _______.

In 1954 a turning point in medical history, resulting from applied bionics (仿生学), was the first “open heart” surgery done in Minneapolis, Minnesoda, by Dr. C.W Lillehei. Dr. Lillehei’s techniques for the first time allowed the patient to be operated upon while blood was supplied to the patient from a donor. Today “open heart” surgery, using more advanced methods and bionic devices, is common in the United States.

The technological advances such as those already mentioned have encouraged scientists to develop the artificial (man-made) heart. Early in 1983, in its first use by a human patient, a medical team at the University of Utah Medical Center replaced the diseased heart of Dr. Clark with a mechanical pump. Clark was sixty-one years old when his diseased heart was replaced by a Jarvik-7.

The world watched amazed as television pictures of Dr. Clark showed him as he improved steadily after the surgery. His continued life showed that a bionic device could imitate the action and function of a healthy heart. Dr. Clark lived for 112 days.

Life-like or bionic machines have existed for centuries. The development of tools by man’s ancestors is a good example of the application of bionics to extend human capabilities. Modern bionic research is especially involved in prosthetics (修复术)--- devices that replace diseased body parts such as arms, legs , and eyes.

The future for applied bionics appears to be promising. Existing bionic devices will become smaller, faster, and more effective. The artificial heart used for Dr. Chark is only one of experimental replacement devices. It is likely to be joined in the future by replacements for other internal systems or organs. Bionic livers, stomachs, and lungs are not impossibilities!

72.Which of the following does the passage mainly discuss?

A.    The application of bionics.

B.    The first “open heart” surgery.

C.    The development of the artificial heart.

D. The future of applied bionics.

73.According to the passage, it was Dr. C. W. Lillehei that _______.

A.    first developed applied bionics

B.    was the first to operate on the heart of a patient

C.    developed the artificial heart

D. used more advanced methods to do “open heart” surgery

74.By “Dr. Clark lived for 112 days,” the author most probably means that _______.

A.    the replacement of Dr. Clark’s heart was a failure

B.    there was still a long way to go in applied bionics

C.    applied bionics was promising

D. the first artificial heart was most effective

75.The author’s attitude towards applied bionics is ________.

 A. critical B. approving C. objective D. doubting

书面表达

The 5-work-day system has been adopted for many years. Almost all the people like this regulation. But many schools are still sticking to 6-work-day system. It seems that students can gain knowledge only in their classrooms.

In fact the classroom work can never replace outside class activities. The 2-day weekend can provide us students with an opportunity to develop our interests and personal hobbies. If we have time, we can read our favorite novels, watch TV, surf the Net or go outing, from which we can benefit a lot. While playing, we can not only relax ourselves, we can also broaden our horizon, build our body and develop our minds as well.

I do hope schools will let us have 2 days off each week.

Many years ago there was a huge oil factory fire. Flames shot hundreds of feet into the air. The sky was thick with black smoke. The heat was intense---so intense that firefighters had to park their trucks a block away and wait for the heat to die down before they could begin to fight the fire. However, it was about to get totally out of control.

Then, all of a sudden, from several blocks away a fire truck racing down the street. With its brakes screeching, it hit the curb(隔离带) in front of the fire. The firefighters jumped out and began to battle the flames. All the firefighters who were parked a block away saw this, and they jumped into their trucks, drove down the block and began to fight the fire, too. As a result of that cooperative effort, though very hard, they were just able to bring the fire under control.

The people who saw this team work thought, “My goodness, the man who drove that lead fire truck---what an act of bravery!” They decided to give him a special award to recognize him for his bravery in leading the charge.

At the ceremony the mayor said, “Captain, we want to honor you for a fantastic act of bravery. You prevented the loss of property, perhaps the loss of life. If there is one special thing you could have---just about anything—what would it be?”

Indian’s snake charmers are to be retrained as wildlife teachers under a plan to prevent their unique skills and knowledge from being lost. The charmers, who make snakes dance to the sound of flutes(笛子), used to be a traditional feature of Indian life, performing in towns and villages, until they were banned in 1972 to control the trade in snake skins.

The government is now considering a plan to train the saperas, as they are known, to visit schools and zoos to tell children about forests and wildlife. There is also a proposal to set up a “dial a snake charmer” service to help householders to deal with unwelcome intruders (people or animals that illegally break in).

“For generations they have been a feature of Indian life but now they can’t earn a living for fear of arrest,” said Behar Dutt, a conservationist behind the plans, “if a policeman doesn’t catch them, animal rights activists report them.”

Many snake charmers have continued to work clandestinely since the ban, despite the threat of up to three years in jail. But their trademark cloth-covered baskets, hung from a bamboo pole carried across their shoulders, make them an easy target for police.

The fate of Shisha Nath, 56, from Badarpur, a village just outside of Delhi, is typical of practitioners(从业者) of the dying art. “I used to earn enough to support my family and send my children to school,” he said. “Now it’s hard to earn even £1 a day. My children want to be snake charmers. It’s our identity. We love the work. But it’s become impossible.”

Next month Dutt’s project to train 30 snake charmers will begin at a snake park in Pune, western India, where experts will enrich their home-grown skills with some formal knowledge.

More than the law, though, it is the dishonest attitude of their fellow countrymen that angers many snake charmers.

“We’re disturbed all the time but when people want a snake removed from the house, they rush to us,” said Prakash Nath, who was ordered recently to the home of Sonia Gandhi, the Congress party leader.

64. According to the passage, snake charmers will be retrained as wildlife teachers mainly

  because ______.

  A. schools need large numbers of such teachers

  B. most of them cannot support their families

  C. their performances on the street are attractive

  D. the government plans to save the dying art

65. The purpose of the proposed “dial a snake charmer” telephone service is ______.

  A. to give performance of snake dancing

  B. to teach householders how to catch and kill snakes

  C. to offer cleaning service to wealthy householders

  D. to help remove unwanted snakes from the houses

66. The word “clandestinely” in paragraph 4 can be best replaced by the word “______”.

  A. secretly B. publicly C. unconsciously D. diligently

67. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

  A. Snake charmers can easily be recognized by the police on the street.

 B. Children of snake charmers would not like to continue their fathers’ job.

  C. Snake charmers are quite angry with the attitude of their fellow countrymen.

  D. The animal rights activists take a negative attitude towards snake charmers.

It is said that standardized testing harms children. The tests upset pupils and make them afraid. If a pupil gets a low score he will be seriously damaged. Standardized testing is not helpful to the normal educational aims designed to help the child.

There is, no doubt, anecdotal(奇闻轶事的) evidence to support some of these views. However, common sense suggests that the majority of pupils are not harmed by testing, and as far as I know there are no real data that would not support common sense on this matter. The teachers I talk with seem much more often to be concerned with pupils who don't care enough how well or how poorly they do on such tests, than with the relatively rare instances of pupils who care too much.

It is normal to be somewhat anxious when facing any real test. But it is also a necessary part of growing up to learn to deal with the tests that life certainly brings. Of the many challenges to a child's peace of mind, caused by such things as angry parents, bad dogs and shots from the doctor, standardized tests must surely be among the least frightening. Unwise parental pressure can in some cases raise anxiety to harmful levels.

A pupil who regularly gets low scores on tests of what that pupil has tried hard to learn is indeed likely to become discouraged. If this does happen, the school cannot say it is offering a good educational program, and the teacher cannot say he is doing a good job of teaching. Most low scores on tests, however, go to pupils who, for one reason or another, have not tried very hard to learn. In the opinion of the teachers of such pupils, it is the trying rather than the testing that is most in need of correction.

Our spiritual intelligence quotient(精神智商), or SQ, helps us understand ourselves, and live fuller, happier lives.

While we’re all born with SQ, most of us don’t even realize that we have it. Fortunately, you don’t have to sign up for classes to learn how to improve your SQ. Here are some simple steps that can lead you to this new level of understanding.

Sit Quietly. The process of developing spiritual intelligence begins with solitude(独处) and silence. To tune in to your spirit, you have to turn down the volume(强度) in your busy, noisy, complicated life and force yourself to do nothing at all. Start small by creating islands for silence in your day. In the car, instead of reading or doing something else, use the time to think. At work, shut the door to our office between meetings, take a few breaths and let them out very, very slowly. Enjoy the stillness in your home after the kids are finally in bed.

Step Outside. For many people, nature sets their spirit free. Go outside to watch a beautiful sunset. If you are walking with your dog, take the time to admire flowers in bloom; follow the flight of birds; watch clouds float overhead.

Ask Questions of Yourself. Ask open-ended questions, such as “What am I feeling?” “What are my choices?” or “Where am I heading?” But don’t expect an answer to arrive through some supernatural form or e-mail. “Rarely do I get an immediate answer to my question,” says Reverend Joan Carter, a Presbyterian minister in Sausalito, California. “But later that day I suddenly find myself thinking about a problem in a perspective(角度) I never considered before.”

Trust Your Spirit. While most of us rely on gut feeling(第六感觉) to realize danger, spiritual intelligence pushes us, not away from, but towards some action that will lead to a greater good.

72. The passage is mainly about ______.

  A. SQ can benefit your life

  B. SQ can be improved

  C. the relationship between your SQ and your life

  D. advantages and disadvantages of SQ

73. In order to “tune in to your spirit”, what you can’t do?

  A. Keep to your working site. B. Show down your pace of life.

  C. Get you spirit relaxed. D. Keep seated quietly.

74. The author mentions the example of Reverend Joan Carter to show that _______.

  A. there are no immediate answers to your questions

 B. e-mail can’t keep working out a problem

  C. the more questions you ask, the better answers you’ll get

  D. changing your way of thinking might help you solve a problem

75. It can be inferred that we can know that the most important thing to improve your SQ is ______.

  A. a peaceful mind B. deep thought

  C. spare time and hobbies D. good spirits

书面表达(25分)

May 20th ,2006 Saturday           Fine

It was an unforgettable day yesterday, and I had a very wonderful time in life.

When I went to the dormitory after class, I was very surprised to find our room was full of joy and all of my roommates were standing there with a gift in hand, smiling. Not until I saw a big birthday cake on the desk did I realize it was my 18th birthday. With the song “Happy birthday to you”, my classmates and I were lost in the sea of happiness and joy. I was so moved that I couldn’t say a word.

It was my last birthday in senior school and I was not a child any more. So I thought we should treasure the pure friendship between us. And as a legal adult, we should also undertake the responsibility of ourselves.

I’ll remember that day forever.
