A)阅读下列短文,从每小题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳答案。
A
Every human being, no matter what he is doing, gives off body heat. The usual problem is how to get rid of it. But the designers of the Johnstown campus of the University of Pittsburgh set themselves the opposite problem-how to collect body heat. They have designed a collection system which uses not only body heat, but the heat given off by such objects as light bulbs(灯泡) and refrigerators as well. The system works so well that no fuel is needed to make the campus's six buildings comefortable.
Some parts of most modern buildings----theaters and offices as well as classrooms----are more than sufficiently(足够)heated by people and lights and sometimes must be airconditioned even in winter. The technique of saving heat and redistributing it is called“heat recovery”. A few modern buildings recover heat, but the University's system is the first to recover heat from buildings and reuse it in others.
Along the way, Pitt has learned a great deal about some of its producers. The harder a student studies the more heat his body gives off. Male students send out more heat than female students, and the larger a student, the more heat he produces. It is tempting to conclude that the hottest prospect for the Johnstown campus would be a hard-working overweight male genius(天才).

Even after two centuries of struggle the land was still untamed; forest covered every area, except here and there a small piece of cultivated soil----where crops were grown; the minerals lay undisturbed in their rocky beds, and more than two-thirds of the people stayed close to the seaboard within fifty miles of tidewater, where alone the wants of civilized life could be supplied.

A deep depression (low air pressure) already affecting much of Ireland is likely to reach western coasts of Wales and Cornwall by early this afternoon and spread over these areas generally by evening. It will bring gales(a very strong wind) increasing locally to storm together with short outbreaks of rain, though with bright intervals(间隔).
The showers that have been affecting much of Southern England have now moved eastwards leaving clear skies in all areas, but temperatures are likely to drop to around five degrees Centigrade. Winds will be light at first but increasing from the west later this evening.
The Midlands will have broken cloud cover but will remain dry at first. There are likely to be some showers later, but in areas near the East Coast there could be some fogs after dark. Temperatures should remain unchanging.
Northern England should remain dry though cloud will thicken from the west this afternoon. In western districts winds are likely to increase rapidly this afternoon, with a possibility of snow showers. Temperatures will probably remain above freezing.
Scotland will remain bright and sunny with light winds at first, increasing to moderate (和风) or even strong as the day goes on. Temperatures will continue to fall, however, reaching minus five degrees Centigrade this evening and there is a strong possibility of future snow after midnight.

When the accident happened I was standing near the bus stop. I saw the old lady waiting for the bus there with her umbrella and a bag. The bus arrived soon. After some passengers got off the bus, she tried to get on, but it was full. The driver closed the doors without looking carefully at them and drove away. Unfortunately the old lady's umbrella and the bag were caught in the door and the bus pulled her along the road. She shouted to the driver and fell to the ground. Then the ambulance came and took her to hospital. I think the driver was to blame. He should have been more careful.
