Kate Anderson became an accidental car thief when she went to pick up her daughter’s car near an Ohio University building last week. Anderson saw the nickel – gray Toyota Camry and used her daughter’s key to unlock the car, start the engine and drive home.
When Charlie Vansant left class a short time later, he found only an empty parking spot. He first assumed the car had been towed, but when police couldn’t find a record of it, they took a theft report.
The morning after Anderson took the car, her daughter discovered the Camry in the driveway wasn’t hers. She found Vansant’s name on paperwork in the glove compartment and looked up his phone number on the Website for the university.
When she told Vansant the car was in her driveway, “It sounded real fishy at first, like maybe she wanted to hold the thing for ransom,” Vansant said.
He eventually went to the house with a police officer, where he was reunited with his car. According to a police report, the case was closed “because of mistaken car identity.” Anderson wasn’t charged.
Vansant seemed to blame the car company more than the “thief.” “Her key fit not only my lock, but my ignition as well- so high-five for Toyota, I guess,” he said.
Toyota spokesman Bill Kwong said key technology wasn’t as sophisticated as two decades ago, and there were so many ways to cut a key, making it possible for such a mix – up to occur. A new system that scans customers’ fingerprints and subtracts the grocery bill from their bank accounts has taken supermarkets in Germany by storm. Stores, school canteens and even bars are picking it up.
The Edeka supermarket chain is the first rtail business in Germany to use the new system. “Almost a quarter of our customers pay with their fingers,” said an employee at the headquarters. Edeka has tried the system at 70 of its supermarkets. It says it will introduce it as 200 others because customers like it.
“At first we thought that only the young who really keep up with the latest technology would be interested, but we were wrong,” said Stefan Sewoester from IT Werke. “Almost two – thirds of the people who use the system are 40 and older,” he said.
IT Werke, a computer company, is one of the pioneers of fingerprint payment software in Germany. It has helped about 150 shops, canteens and bars to put in the fingerprint scanning machines. Each costs about 2,000 euros.
To sign up for the service, customers must have their fingerprints taken and leave their addresses and banking details with the shop. The shop then takes the cost of goods directly out of the customer’s bank account.
“It is especially a good thing for elderly people. Now they do not have to remember their pin to pay with their bank cards, or to scratch around for their glasses or cash.” Sewoester said.

Quality after – school programs are designed to improve academic performance, decrease youth crimes and other high – risk behaviors, and help young people grow into healthy, successful adults.
The effect of quality after-school programs on academic performance is clear. Studies show that students who take part in such programs show better work habits, higher rates of homework completion, improved grades, and higher scores on achievement tests. They also have fewer absences and are less likely to blame. After-school programs also influence high-risk teen behavior. Various studies show decreased rates of crime, drug use, and teen sex among youth who join in well-run after-school programs when compared to similar youth who do not. Finally, after-school programs play an important role in supporting the following fields of development: physical development, mental development and social development. Thus, one can safely say that after-school programming is an effective method to help young people become contributing members of society.
Although there is enough proof from both small and large assessments that after-school programs can make a positive difference, it is important to note that not all programs are equal. First, dosage(时量)matters —young people who attend the most hours over the most years benefit more than members who attend less often or over a shorter period of time. Next, after-school programs make a bigger difference for those students who need help most and have the fewest choices. Finally, program qualities matter. After-school programs work best when they create unique opportunities for youth. They should provide opportunities, skill building meaningful involvement, expression suggestion, service, and work. Staff characteristics make an important difference in the quality of a program. The adults should treat youth as partners, create safe and fair environment, encourage personalized involvement, and actively create learning opportunities. In short, although after-school programs have promising future, how they are designed and run matters.

Mosquitoes do not randomly perch on just anybody, but choose their victims selectively, searching for the most appealing humans, according to a study released recently.
“Mosquitoes use odor (气味) to sort attractive people from the unattractive to find those that are the most tasty,” said University of Florida entomologist, Jerry Butler, in a statement.
In a study of what attracted mosquitoes to people, Butler said he worked off a theory that they go for humans who provide the richest source of cholesterol (胆固醇) and B vitamins that they don’t produce themselves.
Butler found one sure way to stop attracting them – stop breathing. He said that mosquitoes can identify an attractive human dinner target far away. When human beings breathe, they send out carbon dioxide and other odors that travel through the air, which seems a dinner bell, telling mosquitoes that a warm meal is within range.
When a mosquito is trailing an attractive target, it zigzags following the breath plume until it makes contact, landing on the skin and patiently searches for the right spot to insert its stylet for an 8 – to – 10 second feeding session.
Bathing helps reduce the attractiveness of sticky bodies but strangely enough after – bath products do not. Skin care products may improve a person’s appearance, but are also tantalizing to mosquitoes.
Butler said that he conducted the research in order to explore the tastes of mosquitoes and help humans avoid mosquito – borne diseases.

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,共15分)
阅读下面短文,请根据短文后的要求进行答题。(请注意问题后的字数要求)
Dear Sirs,
Your shipment of 12,000 “Smart” watches was received by our company this morning. However, we wish to make a number of complaints concerning the serious delay in delivery and your failure to carry out our instructions with regard to this order.
It was stressed from the beginning that the date had to be less than six weeks from the initial order in order to meet with our own customer’s requirements. While we appreciate that delays in production are at times unavoidable, we must point out that we were promised the immediate shipment. Late delivery of the goods has caused us to disappoint several of our most valued customers and is bound to have an adverse effect on potential future orders.
The second complaint concerns the difference in colour. It was stated clearly in the original order that watches in combinations of green / purple and orange / purple only were required, but only half of them are of the colours specified. Our Hong Kong agent assures us that she stressed to you the importance of following our instructions precisely, since we consider there to be limited market in this country for watches of other colours, at the present time. The rest will, of course, be taken back to you.
, we feel that the most suitable course of action is to return to you unpaid any of the goods considered unsatisfactory, and to deduct (扣除) any cost incurred from our final settlement. We shall also, of course, be forced to reconsider whether any further orders should be placed with your company.
We look forward to your early reply.
Sincerely yours,
Miss Madonna Morrison

Say “No” to Plastic Bags
Plastic bags will not be provided free in the supermarkets, department stores and other markets since June 1 st, 2008. customers need to pay for it. I’m in favor of this act.
In my view, the government is starting to attach importance to protecting the environment. It also reminds people to be aware of the responsibility to protect our environment.
As well all know, plastic bags make our shopping easy and convenient. However, it takes a very long time for them to break up. As a consequence, they can cause serious pollution, which does great harm to our surroundings. What’s worse, they can be mistakenly used in our daily life. Therefore, I strongly recommend that every one of us should take it seriously and try more recyclable bags, like paper ones when shopping to make our environment more friendly.
