A

Harry Potter is one of the most famous characters in the world. He is the main character of a series of books that have become a worldwide success. He is an English boy who has magical powers and discovers them when he goes to special school for wizards. There are seven novels in the series, and the seventh in J.K. Rowling’s Potter series was published on July 20th, 2007. Some 3,500 fans queued for half a mile outside Waterstone’s flagship branch in central London on the night of July 20th, with an expected waiting time of four hours.

Parents and teachers are very happy about the books because children are spending more time reading than playing video games or watching television. It is incredible to see children waiting outside bookstores at night with their parents to buy the books. Some of the books are thick and heavy, but children don’t seem to mind. They rush inside the store when it opens and grab one or more copies. Stores sell out immediately, and parents sometimes fight with each other to buy the last one.

This has never happened to a book before. In the past, we saw kids or their parents running into a store to grab the latest popular toy like Cabbage Patch Kids. Harry Potter books have outsold these dolls, and they have set a world record as the best and fastest selling books in history. Large parts of the books are about Harry trying to understand his new identity and making the choices that come along with it. Harry’s choices and problems are basically problems that all young people have as they grow up.

56.According to paragraph 1, which of the following statements about the Harry Potter books is NOT true?

    B.kids have stopped watching television

    D.kids are becoming more imaginative

58.Why does the author mention Cabbage Patch Kids in the passage?

A.Because they were more popular than the Harry Potter books.

B.To better explain the success of the Harry Potter books.

C.Because they were the most popular toys.

D.To inform readers of the importance of toys.

59.What is the best title for this passage?

A.Harry Growing up B.Coming Of Age

C.Mad About Harry D.A Successful Life

Avalanche

Death comes quickly in the mountains. Each winter holidaymakers are caught unawares as they happily ski away from the fixed runs, little realizing that a small avalanche can send them crashing in a bone-breaking fall down the slope and leave them buried under tons of crisp white snow. There are lots of theories about how to avoid disaster when hit by an avalanche. Practice is normally less cheerful.

The snow in the Salzburg of Austria where a recent disaster took place was typical avalanche material. For several days before the incident I had skied locally. Early winter snow was wearing thin and covered with ice. On top of that new, warmer flakes were gently falling to produce a dangerous carpet. To the skier who enjoys unmarked slopes it is tempting stuff, deep new power snow on a hard base---the skiing that dreams are made of. And sometimes nightmares.

Snow falls in sections like a cake. Different sections have different densities because of the temperatures at the time of the fall and in the weeks afterwards. Problems come when any particular section is too thick and not sticking to the section beneath. The snow of the past few weeks had been falling in rather higher temperatures than those of December and early January. The result of these conditions is that even a slight increase in the temperatures sends a thin stream of water between the new snow and the old. Then the new snow simply slides off the mountain.

Such slides are not unexpected. Local citizens know the slopes which tend to avalanche and the weather in which such slides are likely. Traps are set to catch the snow or prevent it slipping; bombs are placed and exploded from time to time to set off small avalanches before a big one has time to build up; and above all, skiers are warned not to ski in danger areas.

In spite of this, avalanches happen in unexpected areas and, of course, skier ignore the warnings. The one comfort to recreational skiers, however, is that avalanche incidents on the marked ski slopes are quite rare. No ski resort wants the image of being a death trap.

60.Each winter holiday makers in the mountains come face to face with death because .

D.the ice between different sections of snow melts

B.measures are taken to prevent serious avalanches

C.small avalanches can easily be prevented

D.skiers form themselves into a wall to keep the snow in position

Rodney Mace, 35, is married with two young children, and is a part-time teacher of architectural history. “I am constantly surprised by other people’s surprise, when they come to the house and see me cleaning a floor or hanging out the washing.Their eyes open wide at the sight of it! Much of the comment comes from men.But I am even more surprised at the number of women who comment too.”

His wife Jane, an Oxford graduate in modem languages, has a demanding full—time job.She is director of the Cambridge House literacy scheme(扫盲计划)for adults in South London. Her working week involves several evenings and Saturdays, end at these times her husband is in charge of home and family.Apart from this, they share household jobs and employ a child-minder for the afternoons. This enables him to teach two days a week and to do what he considers his principal work:writing. He has written several books and spends much of his time in the Museum Reading Room, cycling there from his home in Brixton.

People ask the Maces if they think their children miss them. Did his male ego(自我)suffer from the changeover? Nothing like that occurred. But he still seems amazed at the way it changed his thinking. “I felt that we were finally going to be partners. I felt enormous relief,1 wasn’t avoiding responsibility, but changing it. Our relationship is so much better now. It has been a change for the good for both of us—I think for all of us, in every aspect of our lives. I cannot overemphasize that in every aspect. I think it is necessary that the woman works. Zhao Wenxuan, a film star from Taiwan has been fond of seeing films since his childhood. He would sometimes go to the cinema for the same film four or five times. He also enjoys literature and art. Before he took the film acting as his career, he has been on the staff of an airline in Taibei,  the capital of Taiwan Province. His change of job to acting was quite by chance.

One day, he came across in the paper an advertisement for a leading actor to appear in the film named “Wedding Feast” . Full of excitement, he answered the job and by telephoning the director of the film, Mr. Li An. It was this telephone call that had changed all his life. At last the director decided him to be the very person for the role. That he could be chosen owed much to his good command of English, natural manners and low pay for his work in the film.

Also, it was the first Taiwan film that was permitted to be shown in the U.S. Thanks to the film Zhao Wenxuan became popular in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.

Zhao has regarded the film as one of his favorite films since he stepped into the acting circle.

Sine 1993, Mr. Zhao has taken part in the shooting of 13 films, most of which are highly thought of.

Mr. Zhao said that Taiwan should think to cooperate(合作) mush with the mainland in the film producing industry and it would benefit each other. “Hello? Hello?…I can’t hear you! My call is cutting out.”

Forbes magazine, in a cover story titled “Cell Hell,” says cell phone users are fed up with unreliable service and what they consider unfair billing charges, which is one of the biggest complaints people have.

Users also complain of poor sound and calls not going through. The growth in customers and average call time means capacity needs to increases 75 percent annually, but companies haven’t been able to keep up. The government set up the industry to have a lot of competition, but it also makes the quality low.

When looking for the best company in your area, the magazine suggests that consumers remember the following tips:

Smaller is better. Smaller companies often have better quality because their networks are less crowded and their equipment is usually new. Voice stream and Leap wireless are good examples.

Be a detective. If you’re getting a lot of dropped calls or dead zones on your commute every day, ask a cell user with the same commute who doesn’t have your problems who his or her carrier is.

Check contract length. The contract’s fine print can be too much to read every word, so you should ask outright how long the contract will be. You should understand that most contracts go for one year and that there are huge penalties for early withdrawals.

Check phone liability. Before signing a contract, check what the deal is if something happens to your phone. Find out if you can insure the phone so that if you lose it, you can get another for free.

Get in the driver’s seat. When the contract is up, the consumer is in the driver’s seat again, for it costs a company about $360 to replace a lost customer, so your provider might give you a new phone to keep you from switching. Be prepared to try and make a deal when your 12 months are up.

71.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage as a complaint cell phone users have?

A.High bills B.Dropped calls

C.Little function D.Poor tone quality

72.Why did the author say that “smaller is better?”

A.The service attitude of the smaller companies’ employee is better than that of the major’s

B.The smaller companies’ networks are unblocked and equipment is advanced

C.The smaller companies’ billing charges are fair.

D.When the contract is up, the consumer is in the driver’s seat.

73.If you’ re always getting drop calls or dead zones on your commute every day, the Forbes magazine suggests that you should .

A.have your cell repaired

B.turn to another cell user with the same commute

C.consider change the carrier

D.tell your carrier and ask for the settlement

写作 Sample writing:

Dear Tom,

In your last e-mail, you showed a great interest in our National Stadium-the Bird’s Nest. Now I’d like to introduce it to you.

The Bird’s Nest is located on North Fourth ring Road in Beijing, and covers an area of 58,000 square meters, with a seating capacity of about 90 thousand. Its construction was started in December, 2003 and will be completed in 2007. It looks like a bird’s nest made of tree branches. During the Olympic Games, we will host the track and field events and soccer matches there. After the Games it will be used for large-scale events.

The Bird’s Nest is thought highly of by officials and experts all over the world. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan gives the thumbs up to its design and thinks that it will be an incredible symbolism in the history of the Olympic Games.

I hope that my introduction satisfies you.

Yours sincerely,

Li Ming
