The amount of stress a person can bear 45 very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such 46 are obviously chief material for managerial responsibilities. It is when such a reaction 52 long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes 53 . Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart diseases have 54 links with stress. 55 we cannot remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.

Since the making in 1086 of the Domesday Survey, a detailed compilation(编纂) that enabled the earliest reasonable estimate of England’s population to be made (the survey did not cover other areas),the number of people has been increasing. This growth has continued despite some setbacks, by far the most serious of which was the Black Death in the mid-14th century, in which it is estimated that about one third of the population died. There is little concrete information, however, concerning variation in rates of births to deaths and of immigration to emigration until 1801,when the first official census(人口普查) was taken. The assumption is that a population of about two million lived in what became the United Kingdom at the end of the 11th century and that this figure had increased to about 12 million by 1801. This slow growth rate, in contrast with that of more modern times, resulted mainly from the fact that a high birth rate was accompanied by an almost equally high death rate.It is estimated that in the first half of the 18th century three quarters of the children born in London died before they reached adolescence.Despite the awful living conditions it produced, the Industrial Revolution resulted in an acceleration of the birth rate; gradually the greater medical knowledge, improved nutrition, and concern for public health that characterized the 19th and 20th centuries bore fruit in a lower death rate and an overall increase in population. Since the 1930s the population has experienced a complete cycle in its pattern of growth.A low rate of increase during the 1930s was followed by a postwar marriage boom that gave rise to an acceleration in the rate of growth, reaching a peak during the mid-1960s. Since 1964, a considerable fall in the birth rate has brought about a dramatic decline in growth, even giving rise to an absolute decline between 1974 and 1978.

36. Which of the following statements is true as to the Domes Day Survey?

A It was made in 1086 to show the variation in population growth in England.

B It was a compilation that first gave an estimation of the population of England.

C It gave an account of the Black Death in the mid-14th century.

D It studied the relation of birth rate to death rate.

37.In 1801, it was discovered that _________.

A. one third of the population died in the Black Death

B. the population had increased rapidly due to higher rates of birth and immigration

C. the population had grown very slowly since 1086

D. 10 million children had been born since 1086

 38. The population growth in England began to increase rapidly _______.

A. since 1801 when the first official census was taken

B. in the 18th century when industrial revolution began

C. in the 19th century when death rate was greatly reduced

D. in the 1930s before the world war Ⅱ broke out

39. The growth rate of population reached the highest point ________.

A. in the1930s B. during mid-1960s

C. between 1964 and 1967 D. between 1974 and 1978

While researchers have long shown that tall people earn more than their shorter counterparts, it's not only social discrimination that accounts for this inequality -- tall people are just smarter than their height-challenged peers, a new study finds.
"As early as age three -- before schooling has had a chance to play a role -- and throughout childhood, taller children perform significantly better on cognitive tests," wrote Anne Case and Christina Paxson of Princeton University in a paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

The findings were based primarily on two British studies that followed children born in 1958 and 1970, respectively, through adulthood and a U.S. study on height and occupational choice.

Other studies have pointed to low self-esteem, better health that accompanies greater height, and social discrimination as culprits(罪犯) for lower pay for shorter people.

But researchers Case and Paxson believe the height advantage in the job world is more than just a question of image.

"As adults, taller individuals are more likely to select into higher paying occupations that require more advanced verbal and numerical skills and greater intelligence, for which they earn handsome returns," they wrote.

For both men and women in the United States and the United Kingdom, a height advantage of four inches equated with a 10 percent increase in wages on average.

But the researchers said the differences in performance crop up long before the tall people enter the job force. Prenatal care(产前护理) and the time between birth and the age of 3 are critical periods for determining future cognitive ability and height.

"Prenatal care and prenatal nutrition are just incredibly important, even more so than we already knew," Case said in an interview.

Since the study's data only included populations in the United Kingdom and the United States, the findings could not be applied to other regions, Case said.

And how tall are the researchers?

They are both about 5 feet 8 inches tall, well above the average height of 5 feet 4 inches for American women.

40. What can be learnt from the study of Anne Case and Christina Paxson is that ______ .

A. the reason for lower pay for shorter people is social discrimination

B. taller children perform significantly better on cognitive test

C. tall people earn more than shorter counterparts

D. prenatal care and prenatal nutrition are less important than we already knew

41. Which period is the most important for determining future cognitive ability and height?

A. between age 3 and schooling B. between birth and the age of 3

C. the whole childhood D. between 1958 and 1970

42. The underlined phrase “crop up” in the Eighth Paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.

When former American President Bill Clinton travelled to South Korea to visit President Kim Young Sam, he repeatedly referred to the Korean president's wife as Mrs. Kim. By mistake, President Clinton’ s advisers thought that Koreans have the same naming customs as the Japanese. Clinton had not been told that, in Korea, wives keep their family names. President Kim Young Sam's wife was named Sohn Myong Suk. Therefore, she should be addressed (称谓) as Mrs. Sohn.

President Clinton arrived in Korea directly after leaving Japan and had not changed his culture gears. His failure to follow Korean customs gave the impression that Korea was not as important to him as Japan.

In addition to Koreans, some Asian husbands and wives do not share the same family names. This practice often puzzles English-speaking teachers when talking with a pupil’s parents. They become puzzled about the student's correct last name. Placing the family name first is common among a number of Asian cultures.

Mexican naming customs are different as well. When a woman marries, she keeps her family name and adds her husband's name after the word de (of). This affects how they fill in forms in the United States. When requested to fill in a middle name, they generally write the father's family name. But Mexicans are addressed by the family name of the mother. This often causes puzzlement.

Here are a few ways to deal with such difficult situations: don’t always think that a married woman uses her husband's last name. Remember that in many Asian cultures, the order of first and last names is reversed. Ask which name a person would prefer to use. If the name is difficult to pronounce, admit it, and ask the person to help you say it correctly.

47. The story of Bill Clinton is used to__________.

 A. improve US-Korean relations      B. introduce the topic of the text

 C. describe his visit to Korea D. tell us how to address a person

 A. continues to use her family name     B. uses her husband's given name

 C. shares her husband's family name     D. adds her husband's given name to hers

50. To address a married woman properly, you'd better______.

Many Americans concerned about air pollution are demanding cleaner and cheaper supplies of energy. The demand has resulted in increased research about ethanol fuel. Ethanol is an alcohol that can be mixed with gas. It burns up most of the pollutants in gas. It replaced some of the chemicals that are known to cause cancer.

Some experts say that in the future ethanol will replace some of the oil imported into America. Today ethanol is less than one percent of the total American fuel supply. The head of the National Corn Growers Association, Kieve Hars, says ethanol will provide twenty five percent of the fuel supply by 2010. The organization is involved in the production of ethanol because it can be made form corn.

One company in American Midwest says it is starting to produce ethanol because of demands form people and from the government. The Congress approved the Clean Air Act in 1990. The company says this means the market for ethanol will expand. The company is a major producer of corn starch (淀粉) that can be used to make ethanol.

At Texas University, Professor Mark Holzapple produces ethanol from materials found in solid waste. He has developed a way to turn materials like paper into simple sugar. He then uses yeast (酵母) to turn the sugar into ethanol. Professor Holzappple says two hundred liters of ethanol fuel can be produced from one ton of solid waste.

A professor at the University of Arkansas, John Geddie, is exploring another way to make ethanol. He is using acids on paper material. He says a large factory could produce ethanol from waste paper about the same cost of that of gasoline.

Environmentalists support the use of ethanol because it turns waste into a useful product. Professor Holzapple says law makers in industrial nations need to support the development of this renewable fuel of the future.

physically and mentally, with 70% of the students having learning anxiety as well as poor eyesight, and a larger percentage lacking sleep. Coming next is the lack of physical exercise. 40% of the students surveyed won’t obey their parents or teachers. Still fewer claim not to have enough communication with others.

As far as I am concerned, we students should balance our physical exercise and studies. Just like a saying goes: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” without a sound body, one cannot achieve anything. However, too much attention has been paid only to studies. Therefore, I suggest we be given less homework and more time for out-of-classroom activities to solve all the problems. Only in this way can we lead a healthy life.
