Life is difficult.
It is a great truth because once we truly understand and accept it. Then life is no longer difficult.
Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent(代表) a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.
What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness, or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.
Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Those things that hurt, instruct.” It is for this reason that wise people learnt not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.

C. the writer like to complain about his problems
D. most people complain about how hard their lives are
4. According to the passage, we give school children difficult problems to solve in order to ____.
A. encourage them to learn B. teach them to fear the pain of solving the problem
C. help them learn to deal with pain D. teach them how to escape from problems
5. The saying form Benjamin Franklin “Those things that hurt, instruct” suggests that ____.
A. we do not learn from experience B. we do not learn when we are in pain
C. pain teaches us important lessons D. pain cannot be avoided

If you walk slowly through downtown Helsinki during the day, taking in the splendid 19th century buildings, white boats and noise of passing trams(有轨电车), you will start to understand why it is called a city of two colors: white and blue.
The sea is always present in Helsinki. When you take a walk over the great open space of the central square, you will hear seabirds screaming. When you take the tram, suddenly and unexpectedly you are faced with a calm, shining blue sea. You may notice that people in Helsinki do not rush about as in other cities. Instead, they walk along the roads, politely letting other people by.
A usual way to see Helsinki for the first time is to start out by the boats. You will walk by the elderly women selling fish and vegetables in the market square and find yourself in front of a beautiful park. You may enjoy a pleasant walk in the park for a few hours and then take the tram. Trams are the perfect way to get around in Helsinki. Watching the old houses, parks, theatres, churches, shops, restaurants and people in the streets, you may have a slightly sad film feeling to it.
The pale summer nights are another wonder in the city. Following the waterfront(滨水区) of the city after sunset, you couldn’t help stopping and listening to the sweet silence, interrupted only by the screaming seabirds and leaving fishing boats.
However, in some way, Helsinki is also the most modern city in northern Europe. You will surely want to visit the white Glass Palace, the modern art museum, and all those extremely popular cafes and design stores.
9. Helsinki is called a city of two colors mainly because of the colors of its ____.
A. 19th century buildings, boats and parks B. 19th century buildings, boats and seabirds
C. old houses, parks and trams D. old buildings, boats and the sea
10. The best way to see most of Helsinki is to go ____.
A. by boat B. by bus C. by tram D. on foot
11. The 19th century buildings, the white Glass Palace, popular cafes and design shops in Helsinki all show that Helsinki is ____.
A. both splendid and traditional B. both and quiet and noisy
C. both historical and modern D. both old and new
12. This passage is most likely to be found in ____.
A. a story-book B. a geography textbook C. a research report D. a travel magazine

CADAB DBBBB
DACBA ACBCD ABCDA CBABB
4. B instead 在这里相当于instead of getting a job as a physics professor.
5. A 选项C 有一定干扰性,while employed 等于while he was employed.
6. A the invention
注意本句的结构:supporting yourself by waiting tables为状语,think yourself as an artist and paint, or draw为句子主要成分,and 前后的谓语动词为并列结构,因此A为最佳答案。
While seeking the work you love 是时间状语从句,you love即that you love, 作定语修饰work,因此it helps to…
20.B 从后文我们得知the imaginative指big, the practical指all the little details.
