Harvard University named historian Drew Gilpin Faust as its first female president on Sunday , ending a lengthy and secretive search to find a successor to Lawrence Summers .
The seven-member Harvard Corporation elected Faust , a noted scholar on History of the American South and dean of Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study , as the university’s 28 th president .
“This is a great day , and a historic day , for Harvard ,” James R. Houghton , chairman of the presidential search committee , said in a statement . “Drew Faust is an inspiring and accomplished leader , a superb scholar , a dedicated teacher , and a wonderful human being .”
Her selection is noteworthy given the heated debates over Summers’ comments that genetic differences between the sexes might help explain the lack of women in top science jobs .
Faust has been dean of Radcliffe since 2001 , two years after the former women’s college was combined into the university as a research center with a mission to study gender issues .
Some professors have quietly groused that the 371-year-old university is appointing a fifth president who is not a scientist . No scientist has had the top job since James Bryant Conant retired in 1953; its last four have come from the fields of classics , law literature and economics .

“Teaching staff turned to her constantly ,” said Sheldon Hackney , a former president of the University of Pennsylvania and historian who worked closely with Faust. “She’s very clear. She has a sense of humor , but she’s very strong-minded . You come to trust in her because she’s so solid.”

Room for Revolution : George Washington and His Philadelphia Friends
March 16, 2007-August 30, 2007
Charles Willson Peale’s George Washington at Princeton is on view at the Museum which was lent from a private collection . This visually striking and finely made life-size portrait (肖像) records Washington’s 6-foot-2-inch figure in a pose highlighting strength , composure , and elegance .It is put up in a room neighboring to the Powel House parlor , a period room from one of Philadelphia’s greatest eighteenth-century private homes , where Washington was frequently entertained by his friends , Samuel and Elizabeth Powel . Both spaces contain important examples of furniture by Philadephia’s finest craftsmen , such as Thomas Afflect and John Aitken . Among these is a side chair specially ordered by the Washingtons when living in Philadelphia .
Painted in Philadelphia in 1779, Peale’s painting was immediately sent to Europe to promote Washington’s reputation as a leader and the cause of the American Revolution , then in progress . Later ,during Europe’s Napoleonic Wars , a Spanish duke with strong sympathies with American Revolution owned the picture . At that time he added the complicated carved caption to it , which describes Washington as “a liberator of his country who abandoned absolute power.”

Like many men at some point, I dream about opening a bar. I plan to call it Work Out. It will cater to married women in need of a little fun. On Friday nights, they will be able to come here and enjoy themselves.
See, I have a gift for business. I am, as my wife Zsa Zsa likes to note, “A man with a million ideas, none of them very good.” Speaking of Zsa Zsa, she is fed up with this plain little life I’ve made for us – too many kids, too many chores, mind – numbing debt. The other day, she said she thought we needed a new family car. “Sure. How about an 87 Lincoln?” I said, and saw my dear Zsa Zsa age about 20 years, and become her mother right before my eyes.
Yes, money is our madness. Last year, we thought we had found a little cushion when I published a book about the life here in suburban America. It sold 12 copies – six of them to my mother. Four other copies went to various aunts and uncles, who used them for martini coasters, then sold them at yard sales. The two remaining copies went to perfect strangers. (I think I own you dinner, whoever you are. Call me, OK? We’ll arrange something.)
When the book didn’t take off, I wrote a TV show. Then I penned a short novel based on the earlier TV idea that didn’t sell. Currently, I am at work on a set of encyclopedias. In a month, I plan to sell them door – to – door.
Such is the life of a writer, sending off the most personal thoughts possible to his hard drive. I am a writer, but also the breadwinner in my family. I’m at the keyboard at 6 almost every morning, hoping to tap out one idea – just one – that will take us up the hill, to the mountain, to the top.

Everyone agrees that it’s necessary to reduce carbon
emissions (排放物) around the world. There is less agreement
overexactly how nations should go about achieving a more
carbon - free planet. Thus, the environmental equivalent:
cap – and – trade carbon emissions, or place a carbon tax on
all users?
With cap – and – trade programs, governments limit the level of carbon produced by an industry. Companies that hold their emissions below the cap can sell their remaining allowance on a carbon market, while companies that go beyond their limit must purchase credits on that market. Carbon taxes are more straightforward: a set tax rate is placed on the consumption of carbon with the idea that raising the price will encourage industries and individuals to consume less. At the moment, cap – and – trade has the upper hand, but doesn’t defeat the tax just yet.
Supporters of the tax argue that a cap – and – trade system would be too difficult to administer – and too easily gamed by industries looking to sidestep emissions caps. Cap – and – trade advocates contradict that like all other flat taxes, a carbon collection would relatively burden lower – income families, who spend a greater percentage of their income on energy than rich households.
So which system will have a larger effect on carbon consumption? A 10% carbon tax might reduce the demand for carbon about 5 % or less, according to an analysis by the Carbon Tax Center, an environmental advocacy group. That may not be enough. Businesses and governments haven’t figured out how the two competing systems can work together, but in the end, the world may need both.
71.The passage focuses on .
A.programs of collecting taxes B.systems of reducing carbon emissions
C.reasons for reducing carbon emissions D.contradictions between the two systems
72.According to the cap – and – trade program, companies .
A.are forbidden to produce carbon emissions
B.are allocated the same amount of carbon consumption
C.can sell their remaining allowance within their limits
D.can sell the extra amount of carbon at a higher price
73.Carbon taxes work by .
A.burdening well – off families
B.encouraging industries to consume carbon
C.raising the price for carbon consumption
D.limiting the carbon consumption of industries only
74.The underlined word “cap” in the second paragraph most likely refers to .
A.limit B.credit C.level D.rate
75.We can learn from the passage .
A.carbon taxes are difficult to carry out
B.cap – and – trade plays a greater role at present
C.cap – and – trade will be preferable in the future
D.carbon taxes will be preferable in the future

第四部分 书面表达(共两节,满分45分)
第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题。(请注意问题后的词数要求)
Slow down, multitaskers
Think you can walk, drive, take phone calls, e – mail and listen to music at the same time? Well, New York’s new law says you can’t. And you’ll be fined $ 100 if you do it on a New York City street.
The law went into force last month, following the conclusion of a recent research that a shocking number of accidents are relevant to people using electronic gadgets (小玩意儿) when crossing the street.
Who’s to blame? Scientists say that our multitasking abilities are limited. “We are under the impression that our brain can do more than it often can,” says Rene Marois, a neuroscientist in Tennessee. “But a core limitation is the inability to concentrate on two things at once.”
The young are often considered the great multitaskers, but a research suggests this perception is open to question. A group of 18 – to 21 – year – olds and a group of 35 – to 39 – year – olds were given 90 seconds to translate images into numbers, using a simple code. The younger group did 10 percent better than the older group . But when both groups were interrupted by a phone call or an instant message, the older group matched the younger group in speed and accuracy.
It is difficult to measure the productivity lost by multitaskers. But it is probably a lot. Jonathan Spira, chief analyst at Basex, a business – research firm, estimates the cost of interruptions to the American economy at nearly $ 650 billion a year. The estimate is based on surveys with office workers. The surveys concluded that 28 percent of the worker’s time was spent on interruptions and recovery time before they returned to their main tasks.
76.What’s the purpose of writing this passage? (Please answer within 15 words.)
77.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?
People take it for granted that young people are good multitaskers, however, the idea needs to be further proved, a research says.
78.Please fill in the blank in the 4th paragraph with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence. (Please answer within 10 words.)
79.Are you a multitasker? What’s your opinion of New York’s new law? (Please answer within 30 words.)
80.Translate the underlined sentence in the 2nd paragraph into Chinese.

One possible version :
Yang Lijuan has done nothing but admire and follow her idol for more than ten years . Even her family helps her to achieve her “goal” at all costs . Obviously , she has gone too far as a crazy fan .
Actually , many middle school students have their idols . As far as I’m concerned , having an idol itself isn’t a bad thing , but the point is ; we should act in a proper way . On one hand , we should first of all focus our attention on our own work . It’s very important for us to have our own career . And we are asked to take responsibilities for our family and society . On the other hand , remember ; no pains , no gains . Our idols have gained their fame through hard work as well . Being diligent , they have set a good example to us . Instead of worshipping them blindly , we should learn from them .

W : I used to, when I was small. But if you enter for big competitions you have to work very hard. I used to get up at 6 a. m. to go to the pool. I had to train before school, after school and at weekends. I swam 35 miles every week.
M : But you were famous at fifteen. And look at all those cups.
W : Would you like to polish them? It’s true that I have some wonderful memories. I enjoyed visiting other countries, and the Olympics were very exciting. But I missed more important things. While other girls were growing up, I was swimming. What can I do now?

W : Oh, it’s a fine day, isn’t it? And the food smells nice. It’s a perfect day for a picnic.
M : Yes, it is. I’m glad it didn’t rain. My name’s Mike Gattes, by the way.
W : Oh, hi! I’m Alice. Nice to meet you.
M : I’m studying medicine.
W : Really? Where?
M : At Harvard. What about you?
W : I’m working for IBM.
M : Oh, are you? That sounds interesting.
W : Yeah. I like it. Hey, it looks like the food is ready.

M : What are pubs?
W : Pubs in England are friendly and warm places where you can have a drink and usually a simple meal.
M : What kind of drinks do people get?
W : You can get wine in most pubs. Many also serve coffee. You go to the counter to order and pay for your drink.
M : When do people go to the pubs?
W : Pubs are not open all day. They can decide when to open. Most open for 3 or 4 hours at lunchtime and again from about 6:00 p.m ~11:00 p.m. In busy areas, pubs may stay open from 11:00 a. m. ~ 11: 00 p.m. Are there pubs in China?
M : Yes. Most of the goers are young people. They like to stay with their friends after work and have a fun time.
W : It is against the law in England to go into a pub if you are under the age of 14. So many pubs provide a special room for children.

M : Hey, have you heard? Robert is retiring.
W : Oh, really? Well, maybe you’ll be made sports director? Keep your fingers crossed.
M : Oh, I hope not, whoever they choose is fine as long as it’s not me. I’m the wrong person for that job!
W : Why do you say that? I mean, what kind of person does it take?
M : Someone with a more easy – going personality.
W : Oh, come on. You seem like someone who could handle anything.
M : Me? You’ve got be kidding. That job would make me much too nervous. Besides, I’m happy with things the way they are. I consider teaching tennis a challenge. It’s a chance to get people interested in sports.
W : So you really don’t think you’re cut out for it?
M : No, I really don’t. I just can’t imagine myself managing a staff and worrying about finances. I don’t handle pressure too well.
W : You know, that’s not the impression I have of you at all. That’s how I’d describe myself.
