SATURDAY, June 16, 2007 (HealthDay News) -- Following simple safety rules can help protect children from injury while they're having fun this summer, say experts from Safe Kids East Central and the Medical College of Georgia's Children's Medical Center.
Here are some safety guidelines:
● When riding in a vehicle, children aged 12 and under should be secured in the back seat in a child safety seat, booster belt or safety belt that's suitable for their age and size. Children aged 4 to 8, or those weighing more than 40 pounds, should be in a car booster. Children taller than 4 feet 9 inches may use an adult seat belt.
● Teach children never to play in or around parked cars. Never leave a child alone inside a car.
● Never let a child under age l0 cross a street alone. Make sure all children know when and where to cross a street. At night, make sure children wear reflective (反光的) materials. Never let children walk alone at night.
● Always supervise young children around pools, spas, baths and buckets. Children should always wear a personal safety device when on boats, near open water, and when taking part in water sports.
● Children should attend swimming lessons with a qualified instructor, but don't assume that swimming lessons make children "drown-proof". They still need to be supervised when doing water-related activities.
● Children should always wear proper protective equipment when using bicycles, scooters,
inline skates and skateboards. Teach children the rules of the road.
● Always supervise children at the playground or in the backyard. Make sure they play on a safe
surface, such as mulch, rubber or free sand. Check that playground equipment is in good shape
and safe.

What is a Leap Year?
Nearly all modem societies use some kind of calendar to decide on the dates and times of everything. Some societies use lunar calendars, which are based on the rotation of the moon around Earth, and others use solar calendars, based on the Earth circling around the sun. The United States, like much of the rest of the world, uses a solar calendar.
The solar calendar is known as the Gregorian calendar. It was developed from the Julian calendar, which was created in 46 BC by Julius Caesar.
The Julian calendar was also a solar calendar, based on the time it takes for Earth to travel one complete loop (循环) around the sun. In Julius Caesar's time, although astronomers believed the sun moved around Earth, they still managed to make fairly accurate measurements of the length of a complete cycle. A solar year, they calculated, was about 365.25 days long.
Julius Caesar, deciding it difficult to add 1/4 of a day onto each year, ordered one extra day to be added every four years to the month of February, creating what would be called "leap" years. This calendar was used by the western world for over a thousand years.
Unfortunately, a problem occurred. When Caesar ordered a leap year every four years, he was putting in too many extra days. A solar year is not 365.25 days long, but in fact 365.24219 days. The difference is very small, but over several hundred years it began to add up. By the 1500s, spring holidays were starting to happen in the summer.
In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII came up with an idea of how to fix the problem. In the new calendar, there is still a leap year almost every four years, but there is also a new rule. If the year ends in 00, it is only a leap year if the year's number can be divided by 400. For example, 1800 and 1900 were not leap years, but 2000 was.
The new calendar was so accurate that it was adopted by almost every country in the world.
60. Which is the name of the calendar currently used in the United States?
A. the Gregorian calendar B. the Julian calendar
C. the Lunar calendar D. the Pope's calendar
61. When were leap years first used?
A. 46 BC B. 1592 C. 1800 D. 1582
62. By our modern calendar, which of the following years will be a leap year?
A. 2100 B. 2500 C. 2200 D. 2800

What makes a house a home?
Not size, of course. I've been in some of the grandest houses in America, and it's readily apparent no one lives there. Earlier this year, I had dinner in a mud hut in Ethiopia, where we sat on chairs next to the hostess' bed -- a home that had more warmth than any house I've been in since.
Now John Edwards is exploring what makes a house a home in his just-released Home: The Blueprints of Our Lives. There Edwards writes, "This isn't a book about houses; it's a book about homes. About the values they rest on, the dreams they are filled with, and the people they have shaped," Edwards writes. "The houses and circumstances are different, but much of what you find inside will be familiar."
Whether you're sitting in an airport fight now, waiting to fly to your childhood home for Thanksgiving, or in your own home waiting for the relatives to arrive, you know what he's talking about.
We've lived in our townhouse for 21 years. It's home now. The loose windows that rattle in the wind. The fireplace so shallow it holds only one log. The kitchen window that offers a view of the world passing by. It's where friends sit on the kitchen counter drinking wine while dinner is being fixed. I lived there for only 18, but it will always be my true home. Even the lamp in the west living room window, which I could see far down the road when driving home late at night, still shines.
While all this talk about childhood memories can be warm and comforting, home is whom you're with, not where you are. As Edwards writes, "Home is family. Home is safety. Home is faith."
Happy homecoming.
63. According to the author, what makes a house a home?
A. All the belongings in the house. B. Feelings of warmth and comfort.
C. The houses and circumstances. D. Drinking with friends on the kitchen counter.
64. About the book Home: The Blueprints of Our Lives, we know that ___________.
A. it was the description of Edwards' houses
B. it is mainly about houses
C. it helps us understand the concept of home
D. it was written by the author of the text
65. What did the author mainly mean when he mentioned the loose windows and the shallow fireplace?
A. His house was too old to live in. B. He missed the feelings of home.
C. He hated living there. D. He missed his old friends too much.
66. It can be inferred according to the text that ____________.
A. the author's family were very rich B. every happy home is the same
C. the author has been living a hard life D. the author and Edwards hold similar ideas
D
June 5, 2007---Sporting a flashy pattern of lavender on black, this newfound species of toad (蟾蜍) is among two-dozen animals that scientists discovered recently in the highlands of the northern
Amazon.
Among the new creatures are four frogs, six species of fish, a dozen kinds of dung beetles, and a type of ant never before seen by scientists.
Researchers made the finds during a survey of remote plateaus in eastern Suriname from 2005 to 2006.
Two mining companies sponsored the research, which was conducted by the nonprofit group Conservation International (CI), to determine the diversity of wildlife in the area before it undergoes further development. Though secluded (隐蔽的), the region has already felt enough pressure from human activity to drive some animals to near extinction.
One of the expedition's welcome surprises was the re-discovery of an armored catfish that had not been seen in 50 years and was supposed extinct due to pollution by local gold mines.
The survey's findings emphasize the importance of protecting Suriname's rare and delicate mountain forest habitats as the human footprint in the region grows, the scientists said.
"Suriname has some of the Amazon's most ancient and undamaged rainforest, which offers huge potential for scientific research and economic investment," CI's Leeanne Alonso, who led the survey, said in a statement.
"Our study will play an important part in determining how to promote economic development in Suriname while protecting the nation's most valuable natural assets."
67. What is the best title of this passage?
A. The Re-discovery of an Armored Catfish
B. Amazon Expedition Discovers Dozens of New Animals
C. Two Mining Companies Sponsored the Research
D. How to Promote Economic Development in Suriname
68. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT correct?
A. The research was conducted by a nonprofit group.
B. The armored catfish had not been seen in 50 years before re-discovery.
C. The survey was made in the plateaus of the northern Amazon.
D. The rainforest in Suriname hasn't been damaged.
69. The purpose of the research is ____________.
A. to find the diversity of wildlife in the area
B. to limit human activities in the area
C. to find ways to protect the animals in the area
D. to find how serious the pollution is in the area
70. What can we infer from what Leeanne Alonso said?
A. Suriname has some of the Amazon's most ancient and unspoiled rainforest.
B. The survey's findings emphasize the importance of protecting Suriname's forest habitats.
C. The development of economy and the protection of animals are of the same importance.
D. It is very important to carry out such a research to protect the most valuable natural assets.
If you and your friends wish to share a secret, you can write it in code, and no one else will be able to read it. Codes are one way of writing in secret. Ciphers (暗码) are another. In a code each word is written as a secret code word or code number. In a cipher each letter is changed.
Codes and ciphers have played an important role in the history of the world. Julius Caesar, the Roman ruler who defeated almost all the countries in Europe about 2, 000 years ago, used a cipher when he sent secret messages to his troops. During the American Revolution, George Washington's spies used a kind of code to send him information about the enemy before his military (军事的) action. In World War II, the Americans "broke", or figured Out, Japan's most important navy codes and got enough information to destroy a powerful Japanese fleet (舰队).
Storekeepers use codes to mark their goods. The codes show how much was paid for the goods or when they were added to the stock. Businessmen use codes to hide plans from their business enemies. Sometimes personal letters or diaries are written in code. Many people enjoy figuring out codes and ciphers simply as a hobby.
In the 16th century, codes and ciphers were very popular among scientists. They wrote messages to each other in code so that no one else would learn their secrets. Geronimo Gardano, an Italian astrologer (星相家), mathematician, and doctor, invented the trellis cipher. He took two sheets of paper and cut exactly the same holes in each one. Then he sent one sheet, which he called a trellis, to a friend and kept the other for himself. Whenever he wanted to write a message, he put his trellis over a clean sheet of paper and wrote the secret message through the holes. Then he removed the trellis and filled the rest of the paper with words that would make sense. When his friend received it, he put his trellis over the writing and read the secret message.
