The British steamship “Titanic,” sank after striking ice in North Atlantic Ocean, and killed more than 15,000.

The Titanic hearings(听证会) were conducted by a special subcommittee of the Senate Commerce Committee and chaired by Senator William A. Smith. The hearings began on April 19,1912, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. A total of 82 witnesses testified(作证) about ice warnings that were ignored, the inadequate number of lifeboats, the ship’s speed, the failure of nearby ships to respond to the Titanic’s distress calls, and the treatment of passengers of different classes. The hearings concluded on May 28, 1912, when Senator Smith visited the Titanic’s sister ship, Olympic, at port in New York, to interview some of its crew. When the Titanic sank, the Olympic was about 500 miles away.

The subcommittee hearing transcripts(手稿), which were published in 1912, are over1,100 pages long. Spawned by the popularity of the movie on the Titanic, a paperback reprint of the hearings was published in 1998 by Pocket Books. This paperback is an exact reprint of the hearing transcripts.

American farmers are raising five percent more goats for meat these days.

Goat meat is high in protein(蛋白质) and lower in unhealthy fat than many other meats. Even so, the industry is small compared to chicken, beef and pork. But immigration has brought more of a taste for goat to America from all over the world.

Experts from the University of Illinois offer some questions for people to consider if they are thinking about raising goats.

◆First of all, do you understand that there always has to be someone to care for the goats?

◆How much land do you have available? And how good is it? Poor ground may support two to four goats on half a hectare. Better grassland can support six to eight. If goats and cattle share the land, one or two goats can be added for each cow. The goats will eat weeds and other plants that cattle do not like.

◆Do you have buildings for the number of female goats you plan to keep during winter? An open, cold, dry barn is better than a closed, warm barn where the air is wet.

◆Do you have the equipment to clean barns and to harvest hay to feed your goats? Or will you get someone else to do it, or buy the hay?

The experts say a profitable business in goat meat may take three to five years to establish. And, of course, there are no guarantees.

Recently some American schools have made changes in the traditional school year to improve student learning.

Some have extended the school year, or reorganized it to avoid a long summer break. Another choice is to extend the school day. A new report from the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy at Indiana University examines research into how effective this is.

The traditional school day has not changed much in more than a century. Activities or special programs might mean a longer day. But younger children usually go to school from about nine o’clock in the morning until about three in the afternoon. Older ones are traditionally in school from about seven a.m. until around two p.m.

Some high schools have changed to later start times because of findings that teenagers learn better that way. But the new report says results have been mixed. Teachers say students are more awake. But students say the changes interfere with after-school activities or jobs.

By 2001, almost one-third of all secondary schools had some form of block scheduling. The idea is to provide longer periods in the school day to teach basic subjects. More class time should mean better results. This is the thinking, at least. Yet a 2001 study found that secondary schools with traditional schedules had higher test scores by comparison. Schools with block scheduling did have higher scores in science, though.

Experts say it is what educators do with the extra time that has the largest effect on student learning. They note a criticism that education leaders often make scheduling changes without changing the learning environment of a school.

66.What was the original intension of schools’ extending school time?

A.To carry out more after-school activities.

    B.To make students learn more.

C.To prevent students from taking jobs.

    D.To win better reputations.

67.From the passage, we know that, traditionally, younger children _________ than older ones.

A.go to school later B.stay at school for longer time

C.leave school earlier D.have less activities

68.Why don’t children like late starts of school days?

    A.Because they can’t sleep late.

B.Because they have less time after school.

C.Because they can’t enjoy more classes.

D.Because they don’t accept new things.

69.What is the experts’ general attitude towards the changes?

    A.Positive. B.Negative. C.Optimistic. D.Neutral.

70.According to the experts, longer school time is not as important as _________.

    A.more activities B.more basic subjects

C.better learning environment D.better education leaders.

TORNTO, Canada People eat more when they are glued to the television, and the more entertaining the program, the more they eat, according to a recent research.

It seems that distracted brains do not notice what the mouth is doing, said Dr. Alan Hirsch, neurological(神经学) director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago. Hirsch explored the impact of smell, taste and eating behaviors while watching TV by measuring potato chip consumption. Forty-five volunteers ate as many chips as they wanted during five minute intervals over three-week periods while they watched monologues by late-night talk show hosts David Letterman and Jay Leno. They also were given chips to eat when the television was off.

Hirsch found people ate an average of 44 percent more chips while watching Letterman and 42 percent more while viewing Leno, than when they did not watch TV.

“If you can concentrate on how the food tastes you’ll eat less because you’ll feel full faster,” Hirsch said, “So if that’s the case, let’s look at the opposite. What if you’re distracted? If you’re distracted, in theory, then you’d eat more.”

A.He should never watch talk shows on TV.

B.He can turn off the TV while eating.
