The Bag Lady

She used to sleep in the Fifth Street Post Office. I could smell her before I rounded the entrance to where she slept. I smelled the 36  liquid coming from her dirty clothing and her nearly toothless mouth. If she was not 37 , she whispered continuously.

Now they close the post office at six to keep the homeless 38 , so she rolls herself up on the sidewalk, 39  to herself.

One Thanksgiving we had so much food 40  over, I packed it up, excused myself from the others and 41  over to Fifth Street.

I pulled my shiny car to the sidewalk, rolled down the window and said, “Mother … would you …” and was 49  at the word “Mother.” But she was in some way I couldn’t 50 .

I said, again, “Mother, I’ve 51  you some food. Would you like some turkey and apple pies?”

52   this the old woman looked at me and said quite 53 , her two loose lower teeth sticking out as she spoke, “Oh, thank you very much, but I’m quite full now. Why don’t you take it to someone who really 54 it?” Her words were clear and her manners were polite. Then I was 55 . Her head sank into her rags again.

If you’re among the millions of Americans packing their vacation bags for summer trips, don’t forget, however, that as soon as you step off the plane, you’re expected to follow that country’s laws. We took a look at one of the top countries Americans are most likely to visit and what might happen if you got caught.

Mexico

1,3,5

Smoking marijuana (大麻): If police find you smoking a cigarette which contains marijuana, they will most likely detain you overnight and you will get a fine.

Carrying a firearm (枪支): You might be able to walk around with a gun in Texas, but that isn’t so in Mexico, so leave your gun behind. If you wish to go hunting in Mexico, you can apply for a gun permit but expect to be charged $ 5,000. If you are caught bringing a firearm, Mexican policeman may take away your car and arrest you. An arrested American may spend months in prison while his or her case is being looked into.

Driving 70 mph on the highway: Speed limits are on the lower side. Depending on what type of highway you’re driving on, you shouldn’t go faster than 62 mph. The police enforce the speed limit, but most local police don’t have radars. The maximum fine for speeding is about $ 40. To scare tourists into paying the fine “on the spot”, sometimes police will threaten to keep your driver’s license. This is illegal, so call them on it.

According to Olsen, the crew for his flight has not been officially announced, but he has worked with two other crew members in the Soyuz simulator over the past week. Olsen also said he ran almost every morning. “This training has given me tremendous (powerful) admiration for astronauts who have spent years doing this and know so much more than I.” Olsen wrote. His trip, originally scheduled for this April, had been on hold last summer because doctors in Russia found an undisclosed health problem during a physical exam. That ailment (an illness that is not very serious) was never found, but this past May the Russian space program gave Olsen medical clearance. DO AS YOU WOULD DONE BY

Why do some people have many friends while others do not? You may even imagine that this ability was something they were born with because it seems so effortless to them. However, it is not so. Let’s look at two psychological experiments which will give you the key to happy interpersonal relations.

1,3,5

The fist experiment is called the “Hawthorne effect” after Hawthorne, Illinois, where the experiment took place. A group of psychologists examined the work patterns of two groups of workers in the Western Electric Company. Before the experiment the management talked to both groups of workers and explained that they wanted to find the best working environment for them. The psychologists changed the working conditions for one group twice but left the other group alone. They were surprised to find that productivity increase on both occasions and in both groups. They concluded that the increase in productivity came from the attention given to the workers by the management. It had increased their motivation (积极性) and so they had worked harder. In other words, if you take an interest in others they will want to please you and you will have good relations with them.

The second experiment shows what happens to personal relations if you are rude to or ignore others. After Martin Luther King, Jr was killed in the 1960s, a teacher, Jane Elliott, living in an all – white town decided to help her class of young children understand why the Civil Rights Movement had been necessary in America.

She divided the class into two groups: one with blue eyes and the other with brown eyes. Other eye colours such as hazel or green were excluded from his exercise. Then she told the class that brown – eyed people were cleverer than blue – eyed ones because of an agent (化学作用) for brown colour found in their blood. Blue – eyed people were stupid, lazy and not to be trusted. Jane Elliott did not need to say any more. The brown – eyed students quickly got used to their new role as the leaders of the class. The blue – eyed students became quiet and withdrawn. Then she discovered something very interesting. Four poor brown – eyed readers began to read fluently in a way they had never done before. Jane Elliott had shown that the way people are treated affects not only their behaviour but also their confidence and their performance.

So if you want to be successful and happy, take an interest in others whether they are your classmates or workmates. Congratulate them on their successes and sympathise(同情) with them in their troubles. Remember that the way you treat others will determine their attitude and behaviour to you.

64.What is the main idea of this passage?

A.How to affect people around us by our behaviour.

B.How to build happy interpersonal relations.

C.How to improve productivity in work.

1,3,5

D.How to be successful and happy.

65.In the “Hawthorne effect” experiment,      .

A.psychologists aimed to improve the workers’ performance

B.psychologists changed working conditions for two groups once

C.psychologists wanted to find the relationship between motivation and productivity

D.workers worked hard to please the psychologists and the group leaders

66.The second experiment aims to .

A.tell children to treat each other equally

B.tell children that brown – eyed people are cleverer than blue – eyed ones

C.tell children why the Civil Rights Movement was necessary in America

D.tell children that the way people are treated affects their behaviour

67.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.In the “Hawthorne effect” experiment, both groups worked more efficiently.

B.Children with hazel or green eyes weren’t included in the second experiment, because they are not suitable for the experiment.

C.If we want to be treated politely, we should treat others in the same way.

D.Jane Elliot’s experiment tells us that how people are treated will influence their performance.

D

Science and technology have advanced at such a rate that cloning has now become a reality. The possibility of cloning humans is a serious subject and raises moral questions. In my opinion, cloning is useful for research into cures for disease. However, I think that it needs to be done with warning and carefully controlled by governments.

Research into cloning and stem cell (干细胞) production is chiefly aimed at finding new treatments for currently incurable illnesses. While this would improve the quality of life for many, not enough is understood about what effects cloning would have on the world in the future. This is primarily because we do not understand enough about the results of cloning and both the physical and psychological effects that it is likely to have on cloned individuals and on the rest of the world.

Furthermore, it is thought that a cloned individual would be unlikely to survive birth and would suffer from complications (病发症) resulting from changed organs (器官). There are also quite serious moral subjects as well as a risk. Those who are against cloning would argue that scientists have no right to play God and to destroy the natural processes. Producing embryos (胚胎) for the purpose of harvesting stem cells for research presents significant questions about the nature and status of the embryo being produced. It may also make us question whether getting rid of it after use reduces the value we place on human life.

1,3,5

1,3,5

In conclusion, I do not agree that research into cloning using human embryos should continue. This is not only because it may reduce the value we place on human life, but also because not enough is known about the results. However, I do think that if there is a way to produce stem cells using cloning which does not put human life at risk, then governments should continue to support it.

68.According to the writer, what kind of questions does cloning raise?

    A.moral B.serious C.scientific D.reality

69.What is the writer’s general opinion on cloning?

A.It is useful in every area of research.

B.It needs to be carefully controlled by governments.

C.It is useful for research into cures for disease if it is controlled.

D.It is only useful for research into cures for disease.

70.The writer’s main reason for opposing cloning is that        .

A.not enough is known about the effects of cloning

B.a cloned human would be likely to die as a result of changed organs

C.it has been proven that cloning hasn’t any positive effect on clones

D.it would improve the quality of life for sufferers of incurable diseases

71.In Paragraph 4, the writer thinks governments       .

A.should not support any form of research into stem cell production

B.should support all forms of research into stem cell production using cloning

C.should not use cloning which put human life at risk to produce stem

D.should support research into stem cell production that doesn’t harm human life

A patient came to see me about the stress in her life. She described all the things she had to do -one was to make her bed-from the moment she woke up until she flew out the door for work. I suggested she experiment by not making her bed for two weeks. She was shocked, probably thinking I’d been raised by wolves in a forest. However, she went along with my idea.

Two weeks later she went into my office beaming. She had left her bed unmade for the first time in 42 years-and nothing bad had happened. “And you know what?” she said. “I don’t dry my dishes anymore, either.”

This woman had made two major breakthroughs (突破). One was discovering that she had choices in her life that she had never seen before. The other was giving herself permission to be less that perfect. This story shows an important principle (原理) about managing time: No one can do it all. Each of us has to make choices and accept trade – offs. The problem is, many people choose in ways that put themselves and their health last. They take better care of their houses and cars than they do of themselves. They put everyone else’s needs ahead of their own.

So what is the solution? There’s an easy was. Decide what you want in your life, and put that first. On a daily basis, that should include regular meals, enough sleep and time with your family. Exercise, leisure, friendships and hobbies should also be regular aspects of life. The point is to do something for yourself every day. The choice is yours: whatever makes you feel good about yourself and your life. Take a nap. Take a walk. Take time to play the piano. Stop bringing your briefcase home from the office. Stop keeping your house as clean as your mother kept hers. Fill more of your time with want – to – dos instead of have – to – dos.

72.What is the solution to the problem of managing time?

A.Doing more exercises every day. B.Taking time to visit friends regularly.

C.Stopping making bed occasionally. D.Doing what you want to do first.

73.What does the word “beaming” in Line 1, Paragraph 2 probably mean ?

    A.Worrying B.Smiling C.Depressed D.Luckily

74.What is the major problem of most people managing time?

A.Most people do not take care of their health.

B.Most people put others’ needs ahead of their own.

C.Most people cannot keep balance on managing time.

D.Most people do not take time to relax themselves.

Text 11

Good evening. Tonight’s broadcast brings together music from different corners of the world. The records we have chosen for you are from classical Western music, Indian music and pop. In this broadcast we shall study the language of music. We shall try to find out how music expresses how people feel. You shall hear a Beethoven piano piece and songs sung by a pop group and some black Americans. It will be natural if you like one more than the others. I shall be trying to explain why they are all good music. The feeling in each of the following musical compositions is sadness. You can find sadness in words, in paintings, and in music. Music is one form of arts. It’s like the spoken language, but uses sounds differently. I shall be saying a few words after each record. Now, the piano piece by Beethoven.

One possible version:

Bondi beach, which is one of the most famous beaches in Australia, is about nine kilometers from the center of Sydney.

The beach is about one kilometer in length and the sand is clean and white. In front of the beach is a wide path that you can walk along. Between the path and the road is a large grassy area with wooden tables and benches for picnics. In the daytime, the beach is crowded with people swimming, surfing, sunbathing and playing games, while at night it is very quiet. In the evening, only a few people walk along the sand, although many people still walk along the pathway. However, across the road where the restaurants are, it is noisy and crowded with people enjoying an evening meal. You can smell many delicious aromas as you walk by.
