Two hours from the tall buildings of Manhattan and Philadephia live some of the world’s largest black bears . They are in northern Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, a home they share with varieties of other wildlife . The streams , lakes , meadows (草地) , mountain and forests that make the Poconos an ideal place for black bears have also attracted more people to the area . Open spaces are threatened by plans for housing estates (房地产) and important habitats are endangered by highway construction . To protect the Poconos’ natural beauty from irresponsible development , the Nature Conservancy(大自然保护协会) named the area one of America’s “Last Great Places”. Operating out of a century-old schoolhouse in the village of Long Pond , Pennsylvania, Cook is working with local people and business leaders to balance economic growth with environmental protection. Altemose’s family has farmed in the Pocono area for generations . Two years ago Francis worked with the Conservancy to include his farm in a country farmland protection program . As a result , his family’s land can be protected from development and the Altemoses will be better able to provide a secure financial future for their 7-year-old grandson .

A Snowstorm

On March 5 th , 2007, the city of Shenyang saw a disaster of snowstorm that has never happened in the last a hundred years . The snowstorm lasted for a whole day , greatly affecting the life of people .

Early in the morning it snowed heavily . Many vehicles were trapped on the roads . Therefore , people were forced to head for their destinations on foot . Not only were all the flights cancelled but also many trains were delayed . The city government called on all the citizens and soldiers to take an active part in the activities of clearing snow . Besides, the city government took all kinds of urgent measures to rescue the people trapped in the snowstorm to ensure that everything returned to normal as soon as possible .

Experiencing such a severe snowstorm , I firmly believe that united , we are strong ; divided , we are weak .

W:The sooner , the better .

【Test 4】

M:Where have you been all this time ? The train is about to leave .

【Test 5】

M:I asked your mother about your bike accident . She didn’t’ know anything about it .

W:That’s because I made it up.

【Test 6】

M:I’m full. Why don’t we go out to get a little exercise—go for a walk in the park or something?

W:Well , a walk sounds good , but there are no stores in the park .

M:Uh—oh…

W:And I really feel like going shopping . I hear they’re having some great sales at Century City .

M:Annie , can’t you ever think about anything but clothes ? I mean, to me, clothes are just

something to put on .

W:Yes, and it shows. I think you’d better get a few new things , too—things with a little

style .

M:Oh, no . I learned a long time ago that I shouldn’t try to be fashionable . It doesn’t suit me .

W:But it’s fun to be fashionable—it gives you a reason to buy more clothes. Anyway I need a

dress for the party on Saturday .

M:Another dress ?

【Test 7】

W:Hey, Fred .

M:How’s it going , Alice ?

W:Great . I just finished my last exam for the semester , and now I’m going home to get

for it . Where are you going this summer ?

W:I am going to work on a boat .

M:Sounds good . I’ll be working nearby on the coast .

W:What are you planning to do on the coast ?

M:My uncle owns a restaurant there , so I’ll be working as a waiter at night . I have to save a lot of money for the next school year . Maybe we can get together this summer since we’ll be living near each other .

W:That sounds good . I’ll be too busy on the boat during July , and I won’t see you. But in June and later in August I’ll be doing experiments in the lab and I could drive up and see you .

M:OK. My uncle tells me June is the best time to go there before the town gets too crowded with tourists . Call me before you leave tomorrow and I’ll give you a phone number where I can be reached this summer .

W:No. I made it myself .

M:Really ? I can’t believe it .

W:I’m not kidding . Yesterday I planned to go to the bookstore with my mother . On the way back home, we went to Hongtu Department Store and Baijia Supermarket . At last we came to a small cloth store , where a lot of clothes and cloth were being sold . I happened to see this kind of cloth . The colors and designs struck me as suitable for a skirt . W:Well, they have a television set , a computer , a printer ,and a telephone to connect with
