When I was a child, I had an old neighbour named Dr. Gibbs. He didn't look like any other doctor I've ever known. He never 36 at us for playing in his yard. I remember him as a kind and 37 person.
When Dr. Gibbs didn't work, he planted trees. His house covered an area of ten acres, and his life's goal was to make it a 38 .
He had some interesting 39 concerning planting. He belonged to the "No pains, no gains" 40 of plant growing. He never watered his new trees. Once I asked 41 . He said, "Watering plants will spoil them, and if you water them, each successive tree 42 will grow weaker and weaker. So you have to make things 43 for them and weed out the weak ones." Funny things about Dr. Gibbs' trees. Hardship and difficulty seemed to benefit them 53 comfort and ease never could.
Life is tough, whether we want 54 to be or not. Too many times we pray for ease, but that's a prayer seldom met. What we need to do is to pray for 55 that reach deep into the earth, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be swept away.

In the opinion of many Americans and Europeans,we begin to really explore our world only in the sixteenth century.According to them, the sailors of the ancient world did not explore distant parts of the world;they did not have the necessary knowledge or skills for long sea journeys. However, the people who have this opinion are forgetting two important facts of history.
First, sometimes early scientists have an idea which is correct, but scientists in later centuries do not believe it.For example, about 270 B.C.,a Greek scientist had an idea which we all believe today:The earth moves around the sun.But for the following 1,600 years scientists did not believe this.In their opinion, the sun clearly moved around the earth. They discovered the truth again only in the fifteenth century!
The second fact of history that many people forget is this:Ancient does not mean simple. For example, the ancient Egyptians knew a great deal about the stars;they used this knowledge to find their way across the oceans. Two thousand years ago a Greek scientist who lived in Egypt calculated the distance around the earth. The results of his calculations were close to the actual distance we know today! So the ancients had a great deal of scientific knowledge. They also had skills which equaled the skills of today。For example,l,300 years ago and before, fishermen in Ireland built their boats of wood and leather.Today some fishermen in Ireland still make boats of the Same design. They use tools and materials which are not very different from the tools and materials which their ancestors used. Why? The ancient design of the boats is good, and with skillful sailors. these boats can sail in all kinds of weather.
Clearly,1ong before the sixteenth century, people had the skills, the knowledge, and the equipment which were necessary for 1ong journeys by sea.The world did not have to wait until the sixteenth century for its first explorers?

B.He wants to give an example of something which later scientists greatly improved.
C.He wants to show that science has not been developing significantly.
D.He wants to give an example of scientific knowledge available to early explorers.
62.According to the writer, why do Irish fishermen still use boats like the boats their ancestors used 1,000 years ago?
A.They don’t have the money for expensive boats.
B.Boats made of wood or leather are light and fast.
C.The necessary materials are easily available.
D.The design of the boats is very good.
63. “People from the ancient world sailed Africa. They even reached America.” In your 0pinion,how WOULD the writer of the passage feel about these statements?

B.He does not believe them.
C.He had used this as an important fact to praise ancient civilization·

From a major Windows upgrade to more powerful Web
services and high-definition (高清晰) DVD, there's a lot to
look forward to in the coming year. New monitors, DVD players, computers and
game systems, will blur (模糊) the border between
computers and home appliances to finally create a digital centre in each modern
house.
Vista View
Microsoft's next major
operating system, Windows Vista, looks different from today's Windows. But the
parts you can't see might be even more important. Microsoft is focusing on
securing users from the viruses, worms, and other attacks that have become a
serious problem in the last decade. But security isn't the only point of
Windows Vista. It includes additional gaming features, a new desktop search
function, a new user interface, compatibility (兼容) with high-definition
TV and multimedia equipment.
New DVD on the road
The next DVD
generation has two layers. First, high-definition recording will mean more
vivid sound and pictures. It also means you might have to put aside your
present DVD collection, as people did with tape cassettes in the 1980's when CD
was introduced. The new technology will record high-definition TV programs on a
small disk without quality loss. And up to 50 gigabytes of storage can put 13
hours of programs or eight movies on a disc.
Wireless Connectivity
Everywhere.
Wi-Fi is coming.
Despite the over publicity surrounding wireless networking, the fact remains
that finding a public connection still takes work. Next year, connectivity
should get easier, thanks to long-range broadband wireless technology from
Intel called WiMax. According to an Intel spokesperson a WiMax signal "can
carry 50 miles in tests, but in reality about half that." It means you can
get online almost anywhere at any time.
Next-Generation Game
Consoles (控制台)
Gamers, fasten your
seat belts. 2006 will be a great year for consoles. Next year will be one of
the most exciting with major releases from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. It's
like an election: Every four years or so, gamers get to choose which platform
they'll support for the next cycle. As you'd expect, the processing and
graphics hardware powering the consoles is impressive. They'll include HDTV and
high-speed Internet connectivity.
64. Which is NOT included in Windows Vista?
A. Gaming features. B. A new monitor.
C. High-definition TV. D.
A new desktop search function.
65. From the passage, we can conclude ____.
A. the competition
between console makers is fierce
B. Wi-Fi will take the place
of Internet next year
C. new viruses will be
developed for Windows Vista
D. new products make many of
your old possessions rubbish
66. What do all the items listed above have in common?
A. They are convenient for gamers. B. High speed Internet connectivity.
C. All involve a great
leap in technology. D.
High definition.
67. What's the purpose of writing this passage?
A. To inform you of ways to upgrade your house.
B. To introduce the new technology.
C. To inform you how to build up a digital centre.
D. To introduce the new designs.

us much: the comfort of having lots of stuff, the image we want to
portray, the social pressure to appear to be rich, the fantastic idea of
having something new for its own sake, like a new car or new TV or
the latest fashion. For years, we have spoken to our customers about
the difference between fashion and style. We’ve tried our best to
encourage style and reinforce the concept that style isn’t fashion.
It comes from your imagination and is developed slowly.
It’s reflection of your values.
Today, more than ever, the direction of an environmentally conscious style is not to have luxury or conspicuous (炫耀的) consumption written all over your clothes. This is still our message. We believe this could be best achieved by simply asking yourself before you buy something (from us or any other company ) whether this is something you really need. It could be you’ll buy more or less from us, but only what you need. We’ll be happy to adjust our business up or down accordingly, because we’ll feel we are then contributing to a healthier attitude about consumption. We know this is an opinion against the growth of economy, but frankly, if this kind of thinking doesn’t catch on quickly, we, like a plague of locusts, will swallow all that’s left of the planet. We could make the decision to reduce our consumption, or the decision will soon be made for us.
We are optimistic that we can change course and avoid the disastrous destination toward which we’re heading. We also believe that there are many events occurring throughout the world right now which support this outlook. We’ve experienced big changes in people’s attitudes about some extremely important philosophical issues and values.
Our purchasing habits have enormous influence. By changing the things that make us happy and buying less stuff, we can reduce the terrible impact we have been placing on the environment. We can buy for vital needs, not silly self-satisfying needs. We do need clothes, yes, but so many?
While we’re advocating responsible consumption, we want to suggest one more idea. What you save, if you do, through changing your purchasing habits, contributes to one of the thousands of social and environmental organizations that are working to correct, repair, preserve or halt the damage to which our consumptive ways and economic system have led us.
We all have to work together to preserve the continuity of natural cycles and processes. If we don’t we’ll have no inheritance to give to our grandchildren. All will be gone. Our place in history will be that of the greatest mismanagers of the Earth, not such a loving way to be remembered!

Personally, I prefer to study alone. I find studying alone more challenging and exciting. Each time I come up with an idea after a long time thinking, I feel a great sense of achievement. Studying alone also allows me to develop independent thinking which is a very important skill I need as I grow older and must solve the problems myself without the help of parents and teachers.
Our teachers often encourage us to study in groups. I enjoy my friends' company, but in group study, I find we spend far less time studying and more time playing games and having fun. It is for these reasons that I believe the most effective way to learn new knowledge is by studying alone.
[ Personally I like studying in groups. When studying in groups we can learn from each other, share our experiences in solving difficult problems and learn more in less time.
In the past I seldom had the confidence to discuss study topics with my classmates. I also had little enthusiasm for studying as I found it to be very boring. But following my teachers' advice I joined a study group and to my surprise my performance in class improved greatly. Studying became more enjoyable and something I looked forward to doing as I was able to learn from as well as help others. So for me, studying in groups is by far the most effective way to learn.]
