阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上该项涂黑。
A
The repairman told me, "No charge, Professor Pan! We're friends.""I'd rather pay," I replied."If it's free, I can't afford it!"
Chinese often refuse payment for professional services, insisting, "We're friends now!" But then they show up later to ask me to tutor them in English, or get them into an American university, and I wish I'd have just paid the 30 yuan I owed them in the first place!
According to the Americans, "There's no free lunch," meaning that there's a price for everything, and I'm always looking around to figure out what this means.
Many of our neighbours have given us fruit or flowers or costly teas, never asking anything in return. For years, a bicycle repairman has repeatedly refused to let me pay him."Wait until you have something major to fix! "he insists.
I mentioned to a peasant friend that I wished I had a stone mill to grind(磨)flour for bread.A month later he showed up with a beautiful mill that he'd had his uncle in the countryside carve from a solid block of granite(花岗石).
Chinese generosity(慷慨)is a real education for Americans like me, who would rather avoid social entanglements (纠纷) and just hand over the money. But cash can't compensate(补偿)for the greatest gift--friendship.
When an American saw some of my friends sitting on bamboo stools under the trees, sipping(呷)tea, he said, "They must have nothing better to do.""Actually, "I said, "they are professors, with plenty to do.But probably you're right in saying that, at this moment, they have nothing better to do.And neither do I!"
And I joined the group. We chatted about tea and Chinese cooking and how much my boys have grown since we arrived. One man said, "They were pocket-sized when you came here. Now
they're taller than you.How time flies!"
How life flies. And Chinese are smart enough to share what they know they cannot keep. They freely give of their time, never too busy to help a friend. And they are teaching me, slowly, to both give and receive. So the next time someone says, "No charge. We're friends! " I will thank them heartily. But if they show up later asking me to tutor them in English, I'll make sure they tutor my son in Chinese as well, because there's still no free lunch.
56.Why did the author insist paying the repairman while he was offered free repairs?
A.Because he was an upright man.
B.Because he didn't know the repairman.
C.Because he thought it natural to pay for others' service.
D.Because he didn't want to help others in return.
57.Generally, the author thinks that _________.
A.Chinese are generous and always ready to help their friends
B.Chinese are good at exchange of equal values
C.Chinese are free enough to drink tea and chat with their friends
D.Chinese are helpful but don't treasure time
58.The best title for the passage should be " ".
A.Still No Free Lunch B.A Good Lesson from Chinese
C.True Help or Not D.Learn to Both Give And Receive
59.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.All the Chinese that once gave the author help have asked him to tutor them in English.
B.When a peasant knew the author needed a mill, he made one for the author himself.
C.The author thinks that Chinese are wise enough to enjoy the limited life.
D.Finally, the author changed his mind and decided to do as the Chinese do.

For centuries the chief defense of nations against infectious(传染的) disease was the keeping apart of the sick and possibly sick.Quarantine (检疫), the name given to that practice, was particularly hard on travelers entering a country from an infected area—which until recently meant most of the world.By holding such persons for a fixed period, it was believed that enough time would be given for any undeveloped disease to show itself.
Although it was started with good purpose, the good name of quarantine was gradually destroyed by the bad uses to which it was put.Businessmen angered by constant delays and losses, finally turned against it.
By the middle of the nineteenth century the feeling had become so great that in 1851 the first international meeting on quarantine matters met in Paris.Twelve countries took part. After half a year of talk an agreement was reached, dealing with the control of three major infectious disease.Only three of the twelve countries signed the agreement, and two of them later insisted on getting out of it.
Still, it was a start.Ten international meetings in the next half century showed more agreement on the part of nations to talk about health problems, but few written agreements were signed.During the same period, however, Pasteur, Koch, and the other microbe-hunters are laying a strong base for new international health rules.Once it was known what caused outbreaks, it was much easier to reach agreement about methods of stopping them.

Today, at 28, the young German Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter is at the top."She gives radiance(光辉)to the music," wrote Geoffrey Norris in The Daily Telegraph, London.Mutter was also one of the world's youngest professors.
Born in Rheinfelden on June 29, 1963, Anne-Sophie grew up in Wehr, a small town just five kilometres from the Swiss border. Her father, Karl Wilhelm Mutter, and her mother, Gerlinde, considered music lessons part of a good education. Thus, their first son, Andreas, began practising the violin at eight, and his younger brother, Christoph, had piano lessons. It came as no surprise when Anne-Sophie said she wanted a violin for her fifth birthday.
Her parents thought she was too young for the violin, and persuaded her to start on the piano. But Anne-Sophie has always had a mind of her own."I longed to play the violin," she says."It seemed to me a much more interesting instrument." After six months, her parents gave in.
The famous violin teacher Erna Honigberger, who lived nearby, became Anne-sophie's tutor (家庭教师).After only nine months of lessons, she entered the six-year-old in a nationwide competition for young musicians. With Christoph accompanying her(为她伴奏)on the piano, Anne-sophie won first prize.
In 1974, Erna Honigberger died.Anne-sophie's new teacher was Aida Stucki. She taught Anne-Sophie to develop her own ideas on how a piece should be played, not just to imitate(模仿)others. This is one of the violinist's strongest, most distinctive characteristics(与众不同的特点) today.
Though the Mutters were short of money at times, they limited their daughter's performances to one or two a year."We are glad we went the family road," says her father."No outsider(外人)can ever have an effect on our daughter's career(生涯)or push her into playing more concerts than she wants to." Later she was allowed to give six to eight concerts a year and make some recordings.Only when she turned 18 did she begin her professional career.
71.Anne-Sophie's career dates back to ___________.
A.the late 1960's B.her family education
C.the late 1970's D.her fifth birthday

书面表达
We've had a discussion about whether vending machines should be installed here and there in the city.
Opinions are divided on the question.About 65% of the students are against the idea. They think vending machines are on all the time, wasting a lot of energy. The city is full of vending machines, and they spoil the beauty of the scenery.Empty cans can be thrown away anywhere. What is more, there is no way to check the age of a customer, and primary and middle school students could buy cigarettes at such vending machines.
On the other hand, 35% of us think it is quite necessary to install some vending machines in the city. The machines keep working 24 hours a day, they are so convenient. Thanks to them, you can get something to drink almost everywhere, at any time. Also, you don't have to stand in line waiting to pay for only one small can of coffee.Besides, they don't take up much room.

Almost every family buys at least one copy of a newspaper every day. Some people buy as many as two or three different newspapers. But why do people read newspapers?
Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed from mouth to mouth and sometimes was not true.Today we can read in our newspapers about important events that occurred in far-away countries on the same day they happened.
Besides supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories, and of course, advertisements. There are all sorts of advertisement.Large companies pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space to bring attention to their products so that their products can go into almost every home in the country. For those who produce newspapers, advertisements make it possible for them to sell their newspapers at a low price.
