How would you like an easy way to earn $2500? All you have to is to sit around and wait for your meals. There is a catch however. You have to stay in a chicken cage with a stranger for a whole week. There are no books or television or radio for amusement. You can’t leave until the week is up. And a camera will be recording your every move.
Two people actually took the job. The idea came from Rob Thompson, a video artist. He wanted to make a film about the way animals are treated. His goal was to raise people’s awareness(意识)of the living conditions of animals that are raised for food. He decided to pay $5000 out of his own savings to two people who were willing to live like chickens for a week.
To Rob’s surprise, quite a few people answered his advertisement. He had interviewed and selected Eric, a 24-year-old restaurant worker, and Para, YC a 24-year-old chemist. The plan was for them to spend seven days together in a chicken cage that was six feet long and three feet wide. A camera would record their experiences, which would take place in an art museum.
The week was long and difficult. They slept on a hard wooden floor. They couldn’t stand up without hanging their heads. They ate vegetables and drank water from a garden hosepipe. Their only privacy(独处)was a toilet surrounded by a curtain. There were no sinks, mirrors, or toothbrushes in the cage. Their only inspiration(鼓舞人的东西)was the two framed checks(号牌)that hung on the wall outside the cage. Visitors who came here were warned, “Do not feed the humans.”
Finally it was over, and Para and Eric appeared from their cage. They had survived the week, and they each had a $2500 check in their hands. When Rob Thompson opened the cage, Eric came out, changed into clean clothes, and ate a chocolate bar right away. “It’s great to be able to stand up,” he said. Para just changed her clothes and left. After a week of visitors and reporters watching her, she didn’t want to talk to anyone.
56.What kind of person is Rob Thompson?

A.They didn’t know each other.
B.They couldn’t lie down to sleep in the cage.
C.They didn’t have meat to eat.
D.They had to do almost everything under others’ eyes.
59.Rob offered the money because he wanted .
A.to see if there were any people who would like to live in a cage
B.to show the public how terrible animals’ life could be
C.to make more money by publishing the recorded videotapes
D.to improve housing conditions of working people like Eric

Because of their great power, nuclear-powered aircraft carriers(航空母舰)are considered one of the most important weapons of the 20th century. So far, only two countries-the USA and France-have ever produced them. But these strong fighting machines are about to enter Asia.
The US Navy said last month that one of its nine nuclear powered aircraft carriers will be sent to Japan to replace the diesel powered Kitty Hawk in 2008. In an agreement on Oct. 30, the two countries also plan to level up their military co-operation, and the US called for Japan to take a larger role in the move.
It will be the first time that a nuclear-powered carrier will be based in Japan. Bombed by US forces in World War II at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan is the only country in the world to have been attacked by a nuclear weapon. Therefore, the citizens are highly sensitive to where nuclear powered weapons are based.
“A radiation leak at Yokosuka would kill 100,000 people as far away as Tokyo, and could cause billions of dollars of damage,” said Masahiko Goto, leader of a protest group in Yokosuka. His group has collected more than 300,000 signatures of people across Japan against the nuclear carrier.
The 44-year-old Kitty Hawk has been based in Yokosuka since 1998. The new carrier will travel faster, be able to support longer operations and carry with it the US Navy’s most modern technology.
Experts said that this change of ship suggests an increased military power in the region. It will increase tension among Asian countries. Tetsuo Maeda, an international relations professor in Tokyo, said this move shows the US and Japan’s concern about the fast-growing military power of China and North Korea. But it is unnecessary, he said.
There are 10 countries around the world that have aircraft carriers. They are the USA, Russia, France, Britain, Argentina, Brazil, India, Thailand and Spain. The US now own 11 aircraft carriers, 9 of which are nuclear powered. A new nuclear carrier named after former President Bush is being built and is expected to be completed by 2008.
66.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.A new nuclear-powered ship will be sent to Japan.
B.Japanese citizens oppose the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
C.Japan was attacked by a nuclear weapon in World War II.
D.The USA and Japan are concerned about the military power of China and North Korea.

A.protect the countries in Asia
B.show the USA is a great power
C.let Japanese citizens not forget World War II
D.strengthen US-Japan military co-operation
68.Many Japanese citizens oppose the change of ship because .
A.they like Kitty Hawk better
B.they don’t like the aircraft carrier produced by the US
C.they are worried about the possible danger caused by the aircraft carrier
D.they haven’t made a aircraft carrier by themselves
69.From the passage we can conclude by 2008 the USA will own at least nuclear-
powered aircraft carriers.
A.9 B.10 C.11 D.12
70.We can infer from the passage that .
A.The relationship between China and Japan will be tense
B.China for the time being still doesn’t have an aircraft carrier
C.China and North Korea decide to produce their own aircraft carrier
D.Where the US aircraft carrier is based doesn’t make much difference

For hundreds of years humans have dreamed of finding life on distant planets. Now the hope of discovering real evidence of life has greatly increased.
NASA’s Mars detector(探测器), Opportunity, succeeded in finding signs that water once existed on the planet. Opportunity landed on Mars in January. Scientists now believe that the planet could once have supported life.
This discovery was chosen by Science, one of the world’s leading magazines, as the most important scientific achievement of 2004 last Friday.
“This little, wheeled, one-armed box went around another planet and has done something no human has ever managed,” according to Science. “It has discovered another place in the universe where life could once have existed.
“Although we still can’t say that life could have existed in this environment, it is now certain that there was water on Mars,” said Steve Squyres, one of the scientists working on the Mars mission(任务). The evidence comes from pictures and chemical readings taken by Opportunity. It includes marks on rocks like those caused by following water on Earth and salty chemicals like those found in dried-out sea-beds. Scientists said the new evidence proved beyond doubt that water has existed on Mars. But it is still unknown whether the water was like an ocean or just ice.
While Opportunity has not found any signs of life, the presence of water means life is possible. “In everything we know about life on Earth , there is no example without liquid water,” Squyres said. “So water is important for the search for life on Mars.”
Researchers agree that a future mission(任务)should bring back physical samples(样品). But some scientists worry about the risk that this could introduce dangerous foreign creatures to Earth. “The problem here is how to get the samples back,” Squyres replied. “I think it is our responsibility to limit any risk.”
71.What proved that water existed on Mars?
A.The physical samples with salty chemicals.
B.The marks on rocks and salty chemicals.
C.Scientific achievements of 2004.

B.The water on Mars was like an ocean.
C.Evidence of life on Mars has been found.
D.Search for life on Mars is a great risk to humans.
73.How did scientists draw the conclusion that there was water on Mars?
A.The world’s leading magazine has announced the fact.
B.Scientists have taken many pictures and chemical readings on the Mars.
C.Astronauts have got some rocks from Mars.
D.Scientists have made a study of the pictures and readings sent back by Mars detector.
74.It can be inferred that, if the creatures from Mars came to earth, .
A.they would be kind to humans
B.they would be cruel to humans
C.they would be a great danger to Earth
D.it would be hard to say whether it would be good news or bad news
75.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Real life found on Mars

阅读下面的短文,根据要求完成76—80小题。
Two pieces of foreign news caught people’s attention. In the US, 18-year-old Michael Sessions won the mayoral(市长的)election in his town, to become the youngest moayor in the US. A similar thing happened in Britain. Martin Halstead, a high school graduate at 19, set up his own airline company.
Chinese teens admire their skills in getting such important posts. But have you ever thought that you could have the same success?
Burdened with heavy school work, many high school students in China are told to lock themselves in their studies and forget about other things.
But actually this is not wise.
Everyone is different and there is no need to follow the life paths of our ancestors(祖先). Sessions had dreamt of being a politician since he was a child. Halstead is crazy about airplanes and took every chance to learn about them.
So why not think outside the box, as these boys did? Consider your interests when planning your own path through life. Doing this can be more exciting and makes it easier to succeed. Interest is our best teacher.
But dreaming is not enough. A good education is a stepping-stone to a successful career. It helps broaden your horizons so you understand more about yourself and therefore perform better. That’s the reason Sessions chose while taking charge of his town.
Success still takes work. Without hard work, a dream is just like a cloud in the air that you never can reach.
76.What is the best title of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words)

Is It the Only Way Out to Go to College
We had a discussion about whether it is the only way out for senior students to go to college. Views are different between us.
The majority/ Sixty percent of us consider it very necessary to go to college. They think it can widen their knowledge and improve their qualities. Only in this way can they find better jobs after graduation. Very few students/ Ten percent of the students think it no use going to college, because the tuition is too high for their family to afford. What’s more, it’s rather hard for college graduates to seek satisfactory jobs. Thirty percent of the students, however, believe “All roads lead to Rome”. Therefore it doesn’t make any difference whether they go to college or not.
In my opinion, we can receive a better education at college so that we can server our motherland.
