With his standard Mandarin pronunciation, practiced skills on Chinese expressions and special humour with a Peking accent, Dashan has become a household name across China.
People have always wondered how the 36 – year – old Canadian can be so skillful in the Chinese language even though it is considered by many as one of the most difficult languages in the world. But to Dashan, the great challenge was a piece of cake due to his deep interest, proper method and the excellent environment he created for himself.
“Interest is the best teacher.” That is a universal principle. Even if the 20 – year – old Mark Rowswell --- Dashan’s real name --- hadn’t fully realized what attracted him to the Chinese department at the University of Toronto in Canada, he was already deeply interested in Chinese culture when he decided to have further study in Beijing.
Entering the Chinese department of Peking University in 1988, Dashan felt like a duck in the water. Study is always a hard job, no matter how much interest you have. Therefore, effective ways are necessary to improvement. “Learn for life and learn in life” is Dashan’s belief.
As a freshman at the University of Peking, the student did study the textbooks, which especially aimed on foreign Chinese learners. They did help him build a solid foundation.
However, that’s far from enough to grasp the Chinese language. Starting in his junior year, Dashan began to read original Chinese novels, Chinese newspapers and even the selected works of Deng Xiaoping. “Only the material for Chinese native readers could give me proper sense of the language, ” he said.
The language that is the daily means of communication is the principle that Dashan always keeps in his mind. What you have really learned depends on what you can use, not necessarily your textbooks.
To learn in daily life requires a favourable language environment, which is also necessary for improvement. Dashan admits it is hard for Chinese English learners to be brought into a good English – speaking environment, but insists, “to listen and speak as much as possible does help.”
To help Chinese English learners develop a favourable environment, Dashan took part in VCD programme --- “Travel with Dashan” --- to teach daily and up – to – date English in real – life situations.

Young men and women, if you suffer from the same eases, don’t despair. Here I’ll give you some examples to show that it is never too late for success.
Charles Darwin’s early life was a mess. In his well – educated family, he was considered to be rather dull. He was sent to Glasgow to study medicine, but he couldn’t stand the sight of blood. He was sent to a divinity (神学) school and barely managed to graduate. Therefore he quit the whole business and shipped to the South American coastline on the famous exploring ship Beagle. On that voyage, one of history’s greatest scientists was born. It was here that he collected the material for the book that would revolutionize (彻底改变) biological science: The Origin of Species.
Edison’s inventions are beyond counting, and all of us are benefited from him: You may not know that Thomas Edison, in his early teens, was so dull that his teacher tried to get him out of the class. The teachers said that his brain was addled.
Tschaikowsky never showed any interest in music during his formative years. In fact he never showed gift in any direction whatever. It was not until he was 22 that he suddenly became fired with a great passion for music, and finally became a great musician with world fame.
So who’s to say what about youth? A young boy or girl who knows what he or she wants to do in life probably has a better future. No teenagers need despair of the future, for they have that one special advantage over that greatest man alive --- time! If you don’t think time counts, look at Grandma Moses. She never sold a painting till she was 80.

We spent a day in the country, picking wild flowers. Our car looked like a slower shop inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights, and then my wife noticed the cupboard.
It was tall and narrow, and it stood outside a furniture shop. “Buy it,” she said at once, “We’ll carry it home on the roofrack. I’ve always wanted one like that.”
What could I do? Ten minutes later I was £20 poorer, and the cupboard was tied on to the roofrack. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.
After a time my wife said, “There is a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake, I wonder?”
In fact a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously as they passed. But then with great kindness, they led us through the rush – hour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the offices came to me.
I was puzzled, “Thank, officer,” I said. “You’ve been very kind. I live just down the road.”
He was staring at our load : first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. “Well, well,” he said, laughing, “It’s a cupboard you’ve got here! We thought it was …er, something else.”

The World Trade Organization (WTO), founded on January 1,1995, aims to encourage international trade to flow as freely as possible, making sure that trade agreements are respected and that any disputes can be settled.
In the five years since its founding, the WTO has become well – known as one of the world’s most powerful economic organizations, taking its place alongside the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
The system of global rules for international trade, however, dates back half a century to 1984 when the General Agreement on Tariffs (关税) and Trade (GATT) was formed after World War Ⅱ.
As time went by, it became clear that the GATT had two major drawbacks --- the limited areas of trade it covered, and the lack of an effective system to settle disputes.
After seven years of trade talks ending in 1994, the so – called Uruguay Round finally gave birth to the WTO, complete with an effective system to settle disputes, and new rules covering trade in services and intellectual property (知识产权).
Even after seven years of talks and 225,000 pages of agreements there were still problems, especially the difficult – to – deal – with areas of agriculture and services, which the member nations agreed to revise (修改) in 2000.

书面表达
As we all know, human beings and the environment can have a great effect on each other. If we use environmental resources properly, human society will develop very quickly and the environment around us will be improved at the same time. But on the other hand, if we use them wrongly, we will suffer a lot from it because there will be many environmental problems. For example, ecological environment will be destroyed, a lot of land will be changed into desert and soil will be washed away in heavy rains. To protect our environment is to save ourselves.
