To understand the marketing concept(概念) , it is only necessary to understand the difference between marketing and selling. Not too many years ago, most industries fixed their attention mainly on the production of goods, and then depended on “ persuasive salesmanship” to move as much of these goods and then change them into money.

Marketing on the other hand, focuses on the wants of customers. It begins with first understanding the preferences and demands of consumers(消费者) and then producing goods that will satisfy them. This eye-on-the-consumer way is known as the marketing concept, which simply means that instead of trying to sell whatever is easiest to produce or buy for resale, the makers and dealers first try to find out what the consumer wants to buy.

This concept does not mean that business is friendly or that consumer satisfaction is more important than profit(利润) in a company. Successful businessmen and producers , however, recognize that the surest route to profit is through understanding and satisfying customers. A striking example of the importance of satisfying customers presented itself in mid-1985, when Coco-Cola changed the flavor of its drink. The non-acceptance of the new flavour by a large majority of the public brought about quick return of the classic Coke, which was then marketed alongside the new .King customer ruled!

The 77th Annual Academy Awards, or Oscars, takes place at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 27th, 2005. this is only the second time that the award have been held in February, the date traditionally being the third Sunday in March.

More than 40 years ago, John Williams gave away all of his belongings and went off to the mountains to live the way people lived 100 years ago. For food he traps wild animals, fishes in the rivers, and plants whatever he can. John lives in a cabin he made by hand, out of trees he chopped down with an ax. Though he has no relatives that he knows of, he does have a deer he raised from a fawn. The deer lives in the house in the winter and goes with John when he goes into the forest for food. Nobody lives within fifty miles of his cabin in the mountains and John has not been out of the mountains during the entire forty years. One day last year I hiked in to see how John lives. It was like going back in time. There were no roads, no stores, no noise, no pollution, not even a post office.

Most notable of all, there were no people and that’s just the way John Williams wants to keep his part of the world ---without people. But there is a paradox in his story. John is an educated man. He has books and nobody knows how he got them. Mostly he reads about his world, the forest, the animals, the plants, and the mountains. He has seen airplanes flying overhead but does not want to know about them. For him, electricity is lightning, not light bulbs, refrigerators, televisions, or washing machines. John Williams is 85 years old and has not had a sick day in his life. He attributes his long life to the fact that he has nothing to do with people and in order that he might enjoy many more years of health, happiness, and solitude, I will not tell you where his kingdom lies. There is no room there for you or me.

64.Who lives in John Williams’s house?

A.He and his family            B.John Williams himself

C.Nobody---he sleeps outside D.A group of friends

65.John Williams’s house is made of ____.

   A.wood        B.bricks C.animal skin D.old stones

66.John Williams has lived in his present location ____.

A.since he was born             B.since his wife died

C.almost half his life D.since he graduated from college

67.According to the speaker, which of the following could John Williams Not use in his cabin?

  A.An ax B.Clothing C.Knives D.Electricity

Since life is short and the world is wide, the sooner you start exploring it, the better. Soon enough the time will come when you are too tied to move farther than the terrace of the best hotel. Go now.

No need, you may say, to tell me that. But what I do need to tell you is that you will need with a surprising amount of opposition the moment you try to set out. Rubbish, you will reply. More people go abroad nowadays than ever before; never has travel, particularly among the young, been wiser with international exchanges. Perhaps not; but none of this, my dear young friends, is travel. Travel is not going on a round coach trip for $67 in all, or spending ten days at a hotel by the sea. Travel is when you want to see how much money and resources you have and then set out, alone or with chosen friends, to make an unhurried journey to a distant goal without a set date for your return.

Real travel, then, is independence in action and is not liked by most parents. They don’t mind your going in a school party to Athens, because they know just where you are and when you’ll be back, and they can, therefore, permit you the imagination of freedom without for one second letting you beyond their control. But what they cannot bear is that you should travel all on your own, without giving them your address and return date. In fact, their fears are quite reasonable because that shows how much they love you. So in order to enjoy real travel and at the same time put your parents’ mind at ease. It would be really important for you to bear the following advice in mind.

68.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

  A.People travel more than before

B.Young people are discouraged to travel abroad

C.People should not go on round coach trip for $67

D.educational visits should not be encouraged as they are not real travel.

69.According to the writer, real travel means _____.

A.telling your parents nothing about the travel

B.not knowing where you want to go

C.traveling to a distant goal in an unhurried manner

    D.traveling without any plan

70.Your parents allow you to travel in a school party because ____.

A.they want you to be truly free B. you are still under their control

C.they don’t have time to travel with you D. they know it’s good for you.

71.According to the writer, when you do real traveling , you should ____.

A.never mind how worried your parents are

B.give your parents your address and return date

C.tell your parents details about your travel

D.not let your parents worry about you

IS IT TIME TO GET –MP3?

Your computer has been playing music for years, one CD at a time. Now hundreds of songs can be stored in your PC if they’re the MP3 format.

What is it?

MP3 compresses (压缩) music into small computer--- friendly files. You access MP3 music several ways: tunes can be downloaded from websites that have converted (转变) vast music libraries into MP3. Once MP3 music is on your PCs hard drive, you can play it through your computer’s speakers, “burn” it onto blank CDs or swap(交换) MP3 files with friends using e-mail.

How much?

Software needed to play and convert MP3 music is often free. It comes preinstalled(预先安装) on most computers or can be downloaded from many websites, including MP3.com. Some MP3 sites are free. Just type “MP3 sites” into any search engine. Compact portable MP3 players start at around $50 and can hold hundreds of songs. A blank CD on which you can record music is about a dollar.

    Advantages

MP3 turns your home PC into a jukebox(自动唱机). Tiny MP 3 players are the size of a deck of cards, making it easy to take hundreds of songs with you.

Disadvantages

You may find that music at many sites is limited. And some only allow you to listen rather than download offerings. Others let you download music that then can’t be copied to MP3 players. And a growing number of new CDs make it impossible to copy songs to a computer.

72.How can you get MP3 music?

A.by turning your home PC into a jukebox.

B.by taking your own music or songs with you.

C.by copying songs to a PC through the speakers

D.by downloading from websites which have converted music libraries into MP3.

73.Which is NOT true to the passage?

A.Software needed to play and convert MP3 music is often free of charge.

B.MP3 music can be “burned” onto blank CDs or swapped with friends by e-mail.

C.MP3 music can be taken along while traveling.

D.A greater number of new CDs make it possible to copy songs to a computer.

74.Which of the following is the most expensive?

A.Software needed to play MP3 music B.Music from MP3 sites

C.An MP3 player             D.A blank CD

75.What is the closest meaning of the underlined word “Burn”?

   A.Copy B.Play C.Store D.Change

Dear fellow students,

I’m here in front of you with a heavy heart. Because I have been shocked by the terrible loss of lives from the earthquakes and the tsunamis in the Indian Ocean, which hit Southeast and South Asia on December 26, 2004.

The number of the deaths in the disaster is up to 160,000 and millions of people need immediate aid. The disaster caused great loss to the affected countries. The Red Cross Society of China has so far received 160 million yuan in donation for tsunami-hit countries.

In the fact of this sudden disaster, the governments and people there have displayed an admirable level of confidence, courage and capability to save themselves from danger. Merciless as the tsunami was, we human beings are compassionate and caring. As a member of the great Chinese people, we have the responsibility and duty to work with stricken countries and the international community hand in hand and shoulder to shoulder to help people there in rebuilding their beautiful homes. So let’s save the pocket money and donate it to this great war against nature.

Thank you!
