Usually a company’s troubles are over when it introduces a new product that flies off the

shelves. But the new Play Station Portable(PSP) may cause a problem for Sony Corp. that other

business wish they had: whether it can produce enough product to meet the demand.

Stores in the United States such as Best Buy and Circuit City said they would sell out their

first stocks of the tiny gaming device. Here in New Zealand gamers who just couldn’t wait to get

their hands on the new product which costs about $300, lined up outside local electronics stores

before the product was officially introduced at one minute after midnight Thursday.

Sony management said three million units would be shipped out worldwide by the end of the

month. Game fans will have 24 stores to pick from and that number will grow rapidly before the holiday season arrives. This gadget is so popular because, apart from being able to play your favorite video game on the subway on your way into work, you can listen to music , download photos and watch movies on a new complete mini disc format. Disney has plans to release (发行) a number of movies for the PSP, which is expected to compete with Apple’s highly popular iPod.

Sony is hoping the new product will ensure the company keeps bringing in profits while it makes some big changes to its central electronics and movie businesses. Clearly as the prices of DVD

recorders, camcorders and flat screen TVs continue to fall, so do the company’s earnings.

56.What is the trouble for Sony company?

A.The game devices that are on sale for only $300.

B.The product that remains on the shelves

C.Game lover’s high demand that can’t be met

    D.More popularity of Apple’s iPod

57.From the third paragraph we can know that ____.

A.in the US many stores prefer iPod

B.Best Buy and Circuit City have no PSPs in stock

C.in New Zealand PSPs are displayed outside the stores before Thursday

D.PSP had a bright future in many countries

58.What will Sony do to deal with its problem?

A.Close its stores in the US B.Change its “on sale” policy greatly

C.Put more products on the shelves D.Open more stores worldwide

59.The underlined word can be replaced by ____.

   A.store B.stock C.PSP D.iPod

                B

They cannot vote which nations should have a seat on the United Nations Security Council(安

理会), but ordinary people have shown their feelings. By Tuesday afternoon, over 11.5 million

people in and outside China had signed an online petition(请愿) saying Japan should not succeed in

its bid(申请) for an everlasting seat on the Security Council.

The loud call is due to the historical facts in World War II. Some Japanese politicians said

their country is ready to play a more active role in global affairs, and their country’s contribution

can no longer be limited to financial aspects.

The petition by 11.5 million people tells Japan that money alone cannot buy their hearts.

A new history textbook that a right-wing Japanese organization has submitted(服从) for

official agreement goes so far as to paint Japan as a “victim” in World War II. Its authors even say

that China started all the wars between the two countries.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi turned down an invitation to a grand party in

Moscow on May 9 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the end of War World II, Koizumi”s absence

will do nothing but encourage more probes(追究) into his country’s historical baggage.

Japanese politicians continue to visit the Yasukuni Shrine . Wartime leader and war criminal

Kideki Tojo, as well as five other hanged war criminals, are buried at the shrine. They talk about

peace during the visits and ask their Asian neighbours to understand Japanese culture, which requires them to visit Shinto shrines to mark seasonal celebrations. But they don’t see the pains that the Japanese invasion(侵略) brought on other Asian countries. How can a nation sleep with such a history on its conscience(良心)? The amount of money Japan gives the United Nations does not necessarily give the country the role in international affairs. Neither will an everlasting seat on the Security Council free Japan from its historical baggage.

60.According to some Japanese politicians their visits to Shinto Shrines are due to ____.

A.the fact that the six World War II criminals were buried there

B.the intention that Japan wants to get an everlasting seat on the Security Council

    C.the requirement of Japanese cultures

D.the probes of the war criminals

61.The 11.5 million people signed an online petition to ____.

A.stop Japan from bidding an everlasting seat on the Security Council

B.express their feelings that they didn’t want Japan to win its bid

C.honor the people who died in World War II

D.support the idea that Japan should give the UN more money.

62.In a new Japanese history book _____.

A.the Japanese are described as right-wing people

B.many victims submitted the agreement in World War II

C.Japanese government has signed the agreement officially

D.China is considered to have been responsible for the war.

63.Which of the following descriptions about Japan is NOT true?

A.The government refused an invitation to the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II

B.It wants to get an everlasting seat on the Security Council

C.It wants more probes into its historical baggage.

D.It gives the UN much money.

For millions of people, the American dream of owning a home seems to be slipping out of reach.

“Maybe young couples can no longer afford to buy a ready-made house as their parents did, “ says 40-year-old building instructor Pat Hennin. “But they can still have a home. Like their pioneer ancestors, they can build it themselves , and at less than half the cost of a ready-made house.

The owner-builders came from every occupational group, although surprisingly few are professional building workers. Many take the plunge with little or no experience . “I learned how to build my house from reading books,” says John Brown, who built a six-room home for $25,000 in High Falls, New Jersey. “If you have patience and the carpentry(木匠) skill to make a bookcase, you can build a house.” An astonishing 50 percent of these owner builders hammer every nail, lay every pipe, and wire every switch with their own hands. The rest contract for some parts of the task. But even those who just act as contractors and finish the insides of their homes can save from 30 percent to 45 percent of what a ready-made home would cost.

One survey revealed that 60 percent of owner-builders also design their homes. Many others buy commercial house planes for less than $100 or use plans available from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

We all associate colors with feeling and attitudes. In politics dark blue often means “tradition”, and red means “social change”. But blue can also mean sadness( I’m feeling blue), white is often for purity, although in China white is worn at weddings and black for funerals. Advertisers are aware of the importance of selecting colors according to the way people react to them. Soap powders come in white and light blue packets (clean and cold, like ice); cereals often come in brown packets (like wheat fields), but cosmetics(化妆品) never come in brown jars(dirty?)

Where do these ideas come from? Max Luscher from the University of Geneva believes that in the beginning life was dictated by two factors beyond our control: night brought with it the possibility of action, and increase in the metabolic rate, thus providing us with energy and initiative. Dark blue , therefore, is the color of quiet and passivity, bright yellow , the color of hope and activity.

In prehistoric times, activity as a rule took one of two forms: either we were hunting and attacking, or we were being hunted and defending ourselves against attack. Attack is universally represented by the color red; self-preservation by its complement green.

72.Which of the following is NOT true about the color of dark blue?

A.It brings tragedy B.it means tradition

C.it represents night D.it indicates quietness

73.Soap powders come in white and light blue packets to ____.

    A.resemble ice B.show quality C.suggest purity D.attract customers

74.In Luscher’s view, which of the following colors is connected with defence?

    A.Red B.Blue C.Dark D.Green

75.According to the passage, what kind of people would probably favor yellow? People who are ____.

A.passive and conservative            B. creative and aggressive

C.hopeful and active D.ideal and dreamy

Dear Peter

How nice to hear from you again. How nice to hear from you again. You want to know what is going on in our school. In short, things have been improving since the school began to carry on exploring study. In the past, the teachers always kept on explaining the points in class. We students just listened and took notes. But now we often discuss and try to solve the problems raised by the teachers or ourselves. After class, we enjoy different kinds of activities instead of doing endless homework. For example, we can read what we are interested in. We can go to the library or surf the Internet for various kinds of information.

In a word, we are now masters of study, and we are happy.

Best wishes.

                    Yours,

                    Li Hua
