My grandmother , a remarkable woman in some ways, lives alone in a North London flat, in a fiercely independent style. From time to time someone ferries her over to Northeast London to see my mother –her daughter---but usually it is my mother and the rest of the family who go to see her. She doesn’t seem to be lonely even though solitary. She reads a great deal--- mostly newspapers, and devours any information about royalty---not that she professes royalism; she is just eagerly curious about royal blood. She reads in Swedish, her mother tongue, fairly frequently , and continues to keep up a lively correspondence with her younger sister in Stockholm. She no longer sleeps very much, tending to rise in the morning to make tea.

She used to be something of a gastronome, but recently it has become almost irrelevant to her, even something of a nuisance(另人讨厌的东西). I remember when she would eye up salamis(一种香肠) and exotic cheese on the family table—now only birdseed keeps her going!

59.Grandmother in particular likes to cover any information about royalty, because she ____.

A.wants to pretend to be royal member B.wants to become a friend of the royal family

C.be a eater of good food D.eat anything she could get

62.The last part of the last sentence “now only birdseed keeps her going” means ____.

D.now she only likes to go with the birds she keeps

63.Between North London and Northeast London, there is a ____.

Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking cycling or swimming, winter skating or skiing in winter. It may be a game of some kind, football, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering(登山).

Those who have a passion(热情) for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.

Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different thing that it would be dangerous to ignore(忽略) , but it is this freedom  from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.

If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.

The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than men. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.

A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of efforts and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

64.Mountaineering involves _____.

  A.cold B.hardship C.physical risk D.all of the above

65.The difference between a sport and a game has something to do with the kind of ____.

  A.activity B.rules C.uniform D.participants

66.Mountaineering can be called a team sport because ____.

A.it is an Olympic event B.teams compete against each other

C.there are 5 climbers on each team D.it depends on each other while climbing

67.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.Mountaineering Is Different from Golf and Football

    B.Mountaineering

C.Mountaineering Is More Attractive than Other Sports

    D.Mountain climbers

                 D

They are among the 250,000 people under the age of 25 who are out of work in the Netherlands, a group that is 40 percent of the nation’s unemployed. A storm of anger boils up at the government-sponsored(政府主办的) youth center, even among those who are continuing their studies.

“We study for jobs that don’t exist,” Nicollete Steggerda, 23, said. After thirty years of prosperity, unemployment among 10 member nations of the European Community has gone up to over 11 percent, affecting a total of 12.3 million people, and the number is climbing.

The bitter disappointment long expressed by British youths is spreading across the Continent. The title of a rock song “No Future” can now be seen written on the brick walls of closed factories in Belgium and France.

Recent surveys have found that the increasing argument in the last few years over the deployment(部署) in Europe of North Atlantic Treaty Organization missiles(导弹) and the possibility of nuclear war have clouded European youths’ confidence in the future.

One form of protest puts the responsibility for a country’s economic troubles on the large numbers of “guest workers” from Third World nations, people welcomed in Western Europe in the years of prosperity.

Young Europeans , brought up in an extended period of economic success and general stability(稳定) , seem to resemble(相似) Americans more than they do their own parents. Material enjoyment has given them a sense of expectation, even the right, to a standard of living that they see around them.

“And so we pass the days at the discos, or meet people at the café, and sit and stare,” said Isbella Gault. “There is usually not much conversation. You look for happiness. Sometimes you even find it.”

68.Unemployment in the Netherlands has affected ____.

  A.one million people B.about 0.6 million people

C.250,000 people D.less than half its population

A.school education is not enough B.what the students learn is more than necessary

C.the students’ aim is not clear D.the students cannot get work after graduation

70.The underlined word “prosperity”(Paragraph 6)most probably means _____.

A.achievements in economy B.times of difficulty

  C.economic troubles D.political advancement

71.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.The rock song “No Future” is an expression of the disappointment of European youths.

B.40% of the guest workers are out of work in Western European now.

C.European youths are worried about a new world war in the future

D.Widespread unemployment is beyond European youth’s expectation

One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admit one’s mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that, and it is even harder to say ,”I was wrong, and you were right about that.”

I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain store in the neighbourhood where I grew up, and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons (in many countries , eggs are sold by the dozen and are put in cartons) .Then he related an incident and I began to remember unclearly the incident he was describing.

I was about eight years old at that time. I went into the store with my mother to do some shopping. On that particular day, I must have found my way to the food department where the incident took place.

There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there were lots of eggs in dozen and half-dozen cartons. The cartons were put there or four feet high. I must have stopped in front of the poles of egg cartons. Just then a woman came by pushing her shopping cart and knocked off the cartons. For some reason, I decided it was up to me to put the eggs back together, so I went to work .

The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared , I was on my knees looking at some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs broken, but to him it looked as though I was the one who just did it. He severely reprimanded me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs. I tried to explain, but it did not good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident , it is plain that the manager did not.

72.According to the passage, many people will have a good opinion of those who ____.

A.often make mistakes but correct them in no time.

 B.Have never made any mistakes

 C.Admit their mistakes

 D.Forget other people’s mistakes easily.

73.Which is the correct order of the following events?

c.a woman knocked off the egg cartons d.I stood in front of the egg cartons

e.the manager reminded me of the incident f.the manager didn’t believe my explanation

g.I picked up the unbroken eggs.

  A.b, d, g, c, a, f, e B.b. d, e, g, f, c., a C.b, c, d, g, e, f, a D.b, d, c, g, f, a, e

74.The underlined word “reprimanded” most probably means ____.

75.The best title for this passage should be ____.

A.A Case of Mistake B.The Manager I Never Forget

                Xiangyang Residential Area

118 Xaingyang Street

    April 9, 2004

Dear Sir/Madam,

We are glad to know that you are going to take over and rebuild Tourists’ Hotel. The people living in Xiangyang Residential Area next to your hotel want to write to you about the problems we are facing. Our residential area sits next to your hotel. The traffic jams caused by cars and trucks coming into and out of the parking lot often result in inconveniences. And children also find it unsafe to go to school, which is opposite the hotel. We cannot put up with the noise from the Karaoke hall any more. Dirty water from the kitchen flows into our courtyard and it smells terrible. All the people living here are looking forward to effective changes that you are going to bring about.

   Best wishes.

                                  Yours,

                                   Li Hua
