阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station(加油站)about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.

I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.

I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.

Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池)was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership - a shop selling cars - was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.

"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.

Since life is short and the world is wide, the sooner you start exploring it, the better. Soon enough the time will come when you are too tired to move farther than the terrace(阳台) of the best hotel. Go now.

No need, you may say, to tell that. But what I do need to tell you is that you will meet with a surprising amount of opposition the moment you try to set out. Rubbish, you will reply. More people go abroad nowadays than ever before; never has travel, particularly among the young, been more strongly visits, of international exchanges. Perhaps not; but none of this, my dear young friends, is travel. Travel is not going on a round coach trip for $67 in all, or spending ten days at a hotel by the sea. Travel is when you went to see how much money and resources you have and then set out, alone or with chosen friends, to make an unhurried journey to a distant goal without a set date for your return.

Real travel, then is independence in action, and is not liked by most parents. They don’t mind your going in a school party to Athens, because they know just where you are and when you’ll be back, and they can therefore permit you the imagination of freedom without for one second letting you beyond their control. But what they cannot bear is that you should travel all on your own, without giving them your address and return date. In fact, their fears are quite reasonable because that shows how much they love you. So in order to enjoy real travel and at the same time put your parents mind at ease. It would be really important for you to bear the following advice in mind.

64. Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?

A. People travel to foreign countries more than before.

B. Young people are less encouraged to travel abroad.

C. People should not go on a round coach trip for $67.

D. Educational visits should not be encouraged as they are not real travel.

65. What does real travel mean according to the writer?

A. It means telling your parents nothing about the travel.

B. It means not knowing where you want to go.

C. It means traveling to a distant goal in an unhurried manner.

D. It means traveling without any plan.

66. Your parents allow you to travel in a school party because .

A. they want you to be truly free

B. you are still under their control

C. they don’t have time to travel with you

D. they know it’s good for you

67.According to the writer, when you do real traveling, you should _______.

A. never mind how worried your parents are

B. give your parents your address and return date

C. tell your parents details about your travel

D. not let your parents worry about you

D

Supermarkets are trying out new computers that make shopping carts more intelligent(具备智能化的). They will help shoppers find paper cups or toilet soap, and keep a record of the bill.

The touch-screen devices(触摸屏装置) are on show at the Food Marketing Institute's exhibition here this week. "These devices are able to create value and get you around the store quicker," said Michael Alexandor, manager of Springboard Retail Networks Inc. , which makes a smart cart computer called the Concierge.

Canadian stores will test the Concierge in July. A similar device, IBM's "Shopping Buddy", has recently been test-marketed at Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts.

Neither device tells you how many fat grams or calories are in your cart, but they will flash you with items on sale. The idea is to make it easier for people to buy, not to have second thoughts that maybe you should put something back on the shelf.

"The whole model is driven by advertisers' need to get in front of shoppers," said Alexandor. "They're not watching 30-second TV ads anymore."

People can use a home computer to make their shopping lists. Once at the store, a shopper can use a preferred customer card to start a system that will organize the trip around the store. If you're looking for toothpicks, you type in the word or pick it from a list, and a map will appear on the screen showing where you are and where you can find them.

The device also keeps a record of what you buy. When you have finished, the device figures out your bill. Then you go to the checker or place your card into a self-checkout stand and pay.

The new computerized shopping assistants don't come cheap. The Buddy devices will cost the average store about $160,000 and the Concierge will cost stores about $ 500 for each device.

68. The underlined word "they" ( paragraph 1 ) refers to ____

A. supermarkets B. shop assistants C. shopping carts D. shop managers

69. Which of the following is the correct order of shopping with computerized shopping carts?

A. Start the system.          B. Make a shopping list.

C. Find the things you want. D. Go to a self-checkout stand.

A. a,b,d,c B. b,a,c,d C. a,c,b,d D. b,c,a,d

70. We can learn from the last paragraph that ____

A. intelligent shopping carts cost a large sum of money

B. the Concierge is cheaper than the Buddy devices

C. shop assistants with computer knowledge are well paid

D. average stores prefer the Concierge to the Buddy devices

71. What might be the most suitable title for the text?

A. New Age for Supermarkets

B. Concierge and Shopping Buddy

C. New Computers Make Shopping Carts Smarter

D. Touch-screen Devices Make Shopping Enjoyable

E

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time; if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language used around him. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people's. In the same way, children learn to do all the other things without being taught to--walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle--compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let alone correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. "Let him do it himself". Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants to. What this word says, is to give a chance to solve their problems by themselves, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.

If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such tiring work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can't find the way to get the right answer. Let's end all this nonsense of grades, exams and marks. Let us throw them all out, and let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.

72. According to the passage, which is the best way for children to learn things?

   A. By copying what other people do.

   B. By making mistakes and having them corrected.

   C. By listening to explanations from skilled people.

   D. By asking a great many questions.

73. What does the author think teachers should NOT do?

  A. They give children correct answers.

  B. They point out children's mistakes to them.

  C. They allow children to mark their own work.

  D. They encourage children to copy from one another.

74. The passage suggests that learning to speak and learning to ride a bicycle are ____

  A. not really important skills        B. more important than other skills

  C. different from learning other skills D. almost the same as learning other skills

75. Exams, grades and marks should be got rid of because children's progress should only be decided by_____

  A. educated persons B. the children themselves

C. teachers D. parents

M:Why? What happened?

W:Everything went wrong. For example, I had to meet an important customer in the morning and on the way to town the car broke down. When I finally got there, the customer had already left.

M:That’s certainly bad luck.

W:That’s not a11. In the afternoon the children asked some kids over to play and they had a pillow fight and tore one of the pillows. When I got home there were feathers all over.

M:  My goodness!

W:  Wait! There is more. Somebody ---they won’t say who--- had dropped a jar of jam on the new carpet. The dog had lain down in it. So they’d given him a bath and then put him on my bed.

M:  Oh, no!

W:  Oh, yes! And to make matters worse, my boss and wife arrived while I was cleaning up the house. I had forgotten that I’d invited them for dinner.

W:Is it safe to ride a bike at your age, Mr. Clark?

M:You are always as young as you feel. I don’t feel old. I bought my first bike when I was fifteen and now I’ve got my twentieth bike. I frequently cycle to the nearby town, which is seven miles away. I regularly put my bike on the train and go out in the country for a long ride. Right now, I'm planning a cycling tour along the lake with a couple of friends.

M:Nowadays when you turn on the radio, you either hear music, a talk show or news.

W:Fortunately, you can choose the kind of music you want to hear.

M:Yes, and there is a lot of points of view when you listen to talk shows. I usually enjoy listening to them. I particularly like it when a caller disagrees with the talk show host.I like to hear how he will defend his ideas.

W:Some talk show hosts are very rude to those who have opposing ideas. I really find that terrible.

M:It seems that people only listen to the radio when they are driving in their car.

W:That is true for me, but I know that my husband listens to it while he is working at home.

M:Now that I think about it, I realize that a lot of stores have radio playing.

W:It’s still a useful and pleasant form of communication.

(Text 10)

The origin of Father’s Day is not exactly clear. The president of the Chicago branch of the business organization Lion's Club, Harry Meek, is said to have celebrated the first Father’s Day with his group in 1915. The day that they chose was the third Sunday in June, the closest date to Meek’s own birthday.

Regardless of when the first true Father’s Day was held, the strongest supporter of the holiday was Bruce John Dodd of Washington.Dodd felt he had a great father: a soldier of the Civil War whose wife had died young, and who had raised six children without a mother.

On Father’s Day, if children cannot be with their fathers of taking them out to dinner, they send a greeting card. Traditionally, fathers prefer greetings cards that are not too sentimental. Most greetings cards are whimsical so fathers laugh when they open them. Some give heartfelt thanks for being there whenever the child needed Dad.

Is a Training Class or Family Teacher Necessary?

More and more middle school students are going to all kinds of training classes or having family teachers at the weekend. There are two different viewpoints about it.

Some think it is necessary. First of all, it’s more effective to study with a teacher than by themselves. Secondly, it can strengthen what is learned in class. Besides, they can learn a lot more. Others think it unnecessary. For one thing, students can easily form the habit of dependence. For another, students need time to relax from time to time. What’s more, the purpose of many training classes and teachers is to make money.

In my opinion, whether a training class or family teacher is needed just depends. If you are really very weak at or interested in a certain subject, maybe it’s OK for you. But be sure to choose a good and suitable class or teacher, otherwise it would be a waste of time and money.
