Jet lag, caused by traveling between time zones, is becoming a common problem for frequent travelers: for 49 percent it is only a nuisance and for 45 percent it is a real problem. It is caused by disruption (混乱) to the internal biological clock, and may lead to digestive problems, tiredness, and sleep disruption.

Generally speaking, our biological clock is slightly disturbed if we just move into the next time zone, but jet lag becomes a problem once we have passed through three or four time zones. The body takes about one day to getover each hour of time difference. But the seriousness of jet lag problems also depends on ourdirection of travel. If we go north or south, we won't notice any difference, because there is usually no time zone change. However, if we travel west we will be in advance of ourselves as far as our internal clock is concerned, and problems may arise. A west-to-east journey, on the other hand, makes us late compared to the local time. It often demands even greater effort in adjustment since we are not quick enough to catch up with the new time schedule. Therefore, a trip from New York to Los Angeles often causes fewer problems than

a Los Angeles-New York trip.

56. A traveler who suffers from jet lag has problem in ________.

   A. adjusting his biological clock B. knowing the direction of a jet

   A. 24 B. 36 C. 48 D. 72

58. A person may suffer the most serious case of jet lag when he takes a ________ journey.

   A. east-to-west B. west-to-east          C. north-to-south    D. south-to-north

59. The main purpose of the passage is to _______.

A. explain the cause of jet lag problems

B. teach us how to avoid jet lag problems

C. explain the differences between time zones

D. show the ways to lessen the degree of jet lag problems

B

If you are a high school senior graduating and looking to enter college in 2006, you will take the new exam.

The biggest change to the SAT (美国学术能力倾向测验) will be the introduction of a new writing section. The writing section will consist of two parts: an essay and a multiple-choice section. Students will be given 25 minutes to respond to a prompt (提示) and construct a well-organized essay that effectively deals with the task. The essay question may require students to complete a statement, to react to a quote, or to agree or disagree with a point of view. In any case, a good essay will support the chosen position with specific reasons and examples from literature, history, art, science, current affairs, or even a student's own experiences.

Essays will be scored based on the procedures for the current SAT II: Writing Test. Essays will be graded by two independent readers on a scale of 1~6, and their two scores will be combined to form an essay subscore that ranges from 2 to 12. Should the readers' scores vary by more than 2 points, a third reader will score the essay. The readers will be high school teachers and college professors who teach composition. To ensure that essays will be scored in a timely manner, they will be scanned and made available to readers on the Internet for grading purpose.

The writing section will also include multiple-choice grammar and usage questions. Some of these questions will call upon students to improve given sentences and paragraphs. Others will present students with sentences and require them to identify mistakes in diction (措辞), grammar, sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, proper word usage.

The highest possible score on the new writing section will be 800. Scores on the essay and multiple-choice section will be combined to produce a single score. A writing subscore will also be assigned. The highest possible scores on the Critical Reading and Math sections will remain 800 each, making 2,400 a perfect score on the new SAT.

Before Zhang Hanyun, a 16-year-old girl from Deyang City, Sichuan Province, placed third in last year's Super Girl television singing contest, she was an unknown person. A short year later, she is now a mass idol admired by young girls across the country. In the Chengdu area during the selection process for this year's contest, posters of Zhang were plastered everywhere as thousands of girls waited to register, standing in a long line stretching 2-3 km.

Hunan Satellite TV broadcast the Super girl program via satellite for the first time last year, creating a sensation all over the country. Since then, the program's popularity has continued to rise, and the number of contestants doubled for this year's series. But the program has been subject to criticism, as well as praise. Some people say it offers insights, both positive and negative, into current culture and the mindset of an up-and-coming generation.

Jia Ding, a music reviewer, thinks Super Girl became a success because it caters to (迎合)the psychology and hopes of teenagers. For every contestant, the experience has brought not only the sorrow of failure, but also feelings of hope and happiness. "Anyone has access to the stage and anyone may become famous overnight," he said.

The success of Super Girl has attracted increasing attention, but also sharp criticism. Some think it will encourage dreams of overnight success because a majority of the girls involved are teenage students lacking in musical knowledge, singing skills and artistry, yet most expect a miracle to happen. The argument is that such fickleness (起落变化) might push the whole society toward a misguided path that is full of gambling, not hard work.

Others are anxious that Super Girl may help promote the concept that studying is useless, and weaken the girls' interest in their studies. For example, some girl students think that 10 years of hard studying does not yield as much as being a Super Girl. Such an idea may mislead a generation or even several generations of women. Additionally, some of the contestants believe that the funnier and more popular their performance, the greater the chance of winning.

68. The writer's purpose in writing the text is to _______.

A. show the relationship between program and contestants

B. give hot argument information about the programme

   C. report lessons from Super Girl

   D. teach girls ways to become famous overnight

69. By saying "a mass idol" in Paragraph 1, the author means that young girls _______.

A. admire an idol very much

B. get the greatest attention from the program

   C. are often standing in a long line

D. find it a pleasure to keep up with her

70. Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?

A. It is useless to have the right virtues for young girls.

B. It is a good idea to have this TV program.

C. Most of the contestants have only a very slim chance of winning.

D. Super Girl has already become the only entertainment news.

71. What do you think the author is most likely to say if he continues to write?

A. We should not only actively accept them, but also solve the new problems that accompany them.

B. Super Girl should be stopped because overnight success is impossible.

C. The traditional concept of virtue hasn't changed in the minds of the Chinese people.

D. There are no effective ways to separate the good from the ill.

Top Meal of the Day

A recent study shows that nearly 50 percent of the school "kids in Beijing do not have breakfast. They tend to feel sleepy all day and have bad memories, so it is hard for them to get high marks in all kinds of test.

Some students who study late into the night choose to miss breakfast so that they can have a few extra minutes in bed. Others are given money to buy their breakfast on the way to school because their parents are too busy to prepare it for them. In addition, a few schoolgirls want to stay slim and often go to school without breakfast.

In fact, the morning meal plays an important part. It can provide 30 percent of the whole day’s energy. For a creative mind and better judgment, school kids should start their day with a regular breakfast.

Text 1

W: Good morning.

M: Good morning. I'm here to. see Mr Addison.

W: Mr Addison went to Washington on Monday afternoon for an exhibition, and won't be back until Thursday night. If you like, you can come again on Friday morning.

Text 2

W: What time did yesterday's second baseball game start?

M: It was supposed to start at 8 quarter to five, but it was delayed an hour because they had to play an extra inning in the first game.

Text 3

M: Hello, Mary. This is David Morrison from the office. I'm calling to see how Tom is feeling today. If he's not well, I may tell someone else to do his work instead.

W: Oh, hello. The doctor said he'd be able to go back to work tomorrow.

M: I see. Thank you.

Text 4

W: How can 1 get to your house?

M: Oh, it's very easy. My house is only five minutes' walk from the station. Turn right outside the station, and then it's the third street on the left. You can't miss it. It's got the number on the gate.

 It's exactly opposite the park.

W: I see. Thanks.

Text 5

W: What a memory I have! I did write down the number on a sheet of paper when I answered the phone this morning. But now the paper is missing.

M: Don't worry. I'll be seeing Mr. Brown in an hour.

Text 6

M: You were driving 40 miles per hour in a 25 miles per hour zone.

W: I wasn't speeding. I was driving 25 miles per hour. But there was a car in front of me that was only going 15 or 20. I think he was looking for someone's address. I finally passed him. And it was just at that moment that you saw me.

M: You were going 40 miles an hour. The speed limit is 25. The fine is $ 50 plus $15 court costs.

Text 7

M: Here we are. This is it. 1 know it's smaller than you wanted, but it's one of the nicest flats in the building.

W: Does it have three bedrooms?

M: No. There are two. The master room is quite large though. Maybe you could let the children share the large room, and you and your husband could use the smaller one.

W: 1 suppose I could do that. A three-bedroom flat will be difficult to find. I've been looking for one over a week. The few three-bedroom flats that I have found are all extremely expensive.

You said that the rent would be 350 dollars a month.

M: Yes. It includes gas. So, as you can imagine, electricity and water are quite inexpensive.

W: This sounds better and better. But before I sign an agreement I would like my husband to see it.

M: Why not stop by with him this morning? Our office is open until seven o'clock.

W: OK. See you then.

Text 8

W: "Fell me exactly what happened.

M: Well, I was walking through the park yesterday when a woman knocked me right off my feet and ran off through the trees.

W: Can you describe the woman for me?

M: Yeah. She was about 190 centimeters tall and wearing a white and black dress, a red sweater over it, and a pair of basketball shoes.

W: Hmm. What else?

M: She had a heavy build, with long hair and probably in her late 30's.

W: What was, uh, taken.., exactly?

M: Well, just my left shoe.

W: Oh, this man again! He often wanders around the park. He likes to remove the left shoe from men for some unknown reason and usually returns the shoe to the crime scene a couple of days later.

M: Hey, he can keep my shoe, and I'll just take off my left shoe every time I walk through the park.

Text 9

W: Did you see today's newspaper? That building over in Centervlle was just struck by lightning for the fourth lime!

M: I'm not surprised. If the conditions for lightning to strike are rig.ht one time, they might be as good another time.

W: Well, i don't take any chances. If I'm caught in a thunderstorm, 1 look for a building or a closed car. Also, 1 was told that if you're stuck outdoors, the best thing you can do is to keep yourself close to the ground and avoid bodies of Water.

M: To tell you the truth, even when I'm at home, I don't take baths or showers during a

tbtmderztorm. And I don't use anything that works electrically. Maybe I'm too anxious.

W: I wouldn't say that. According to the article, lightning starts thousands of fires every year in the United States alone. !tundreds of people are inju~d or even killed. I think you're just being sensible.

Attention please, ladies and gentlemen. Our bus is getting close to Cambridge, where we'll be stopping to eat. We'll have our lunch in the garden of a restaurant overlooking a small park that reminds people of a very famous tree. It’s said that General George Washington took command of the army in 1775 under its very branches. It was almost 100 years later, in 1864, that the city of Cambridge celebrated the event and from that moment on, the tree was called the Washington Elm.Later the tree was attacked by insects and finally destroyed in a storm. The remains of the tree were cut dowr, and the growth rings were counted to find out how old the tree was. Well, it seems that if Washington had accepted the command of its army under this tree he must have done so on his knees. This paricular elm couldn't have been over 3 or 4 years okt in 1775. It is a well-known fact that Washington took command under an elm tree, but unfortunately it couldn't have been the famous Washington Elm Well, enioy your lunch. Watch your step as you leave the bus.
